Del Mar for Friday 3 November 2017

Hope you enjoy these two great days on racing. I do prefer tomorrow's card. Saturday's card will be posted by 5 a.m. pacific time.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Mr. Hinx   awfully solid record in sprint races on the dirt or the turf (7 5 1 0).....trainer has had a very good year in S Cal in 2017......and I like he has been able to land a strong NY rider for this afternoon's race

5  Americanize   very consistent on main track surfaces (7 2 5 0) and a trainer in Simon Callaghan who has turned into one of S Cal top trainers joining the ranks of some very big names in the game.....hard not seeing this fellow not being a major factor in the outcome of this race

3  Leading Scorer   three-year old colt needs ample time between starts and Baffert shows patience and gives it to him.....seems like the speed of the speed and with money Mike Smith aboard

1  Silent Bird

race 2   below  average clarity

6  Soglio   after 3 straight dull races Graham Motion dropped this three-year into a conditioned claiming grass race where this gelding ran his best race since last winter......and Motion bothers to ship him cross-country.....that tells me he is on the rebound and dangerous

11  Ritzy A.P.   lifetime best and somewhat hidden was his effort 3 back which was the last time he ran on the Del Mar turf.....and he has a much more accomplished grass rider up today than he had in that 3 Sept race at Dmr

4  Temple Keys   laid up since May when he was eased up (but walked off) but Baltas appears to have him ready fresh off of the bench with a tightly spaced work regiment....fairly smooth runner and you can say the same about his rider when he is on  a turf mount

10  Lazzam

5  Start a Runnin

race 3    average clarity

1  Prime Issue   speed of the speed and I sure like that he handled the one hole the last time he had it....... and the effort was arguably his lifetime best.....that and when he has been up for a tag he has usually be very tough........up for 40K today

2  City of Light   seems likely to sit in a nice stalking position behind our top selection......and his last two races are better than par for today's level by quite a bit when you adjust for pace and/or position

3  Donworth   believe he is the best of the off pace runners in this race and he is one for one at the somewhat specialized distance of 7 furlongs.....dangerous sort

10  Dabster

race 4    average clarity

8  Spiced Perfection   quite the break thru in her latest in an effort that if she is up for similar today she would be tough for today's competition to overcome......that and she acts as if another furlong to cover will be to her advantage and the 7F won't be to the liking for many in here

6  Pulpit Rider   won her last two rather easily so she likely feels good for today's race.....but......if our top choice gets a good trip and repeats her last this filly will need about 5L of improvement to compete for the top prize

3  Ismelucky   on the improve with every start and if the trend continues and she gets a decent pace to close into she might have a shot to be a major factor when the wire approaches

1  One Fast Broad

race 5    average clarity

6  Ground Rules   improving by leaps and bounds since the white hot Cerin  claim .......ran way too wide in his latest doing quite well to only get beat by 2 3/4 for the win......2 for 3 at Dmr and owns an interesting pedigree for this ultra marathon affair

7  Hard Aces   very few are proven at today's 1 3/4 miles (or further) but he is as he ran a distant 2nd in last year's version of this race......that makes him hard not to like....same rider as last year as well

3  Destin   lifetime best was run last summer in the 12 furlongs Belmont Stakes where he just missed winning at 8 to 1.....that makes him dangerous if he can manage a rebound of sorts as he was better at 3 than he has been at 4.....but Pletcher didn't ship him cross country without feeling he can rebound......might be feeling better.......lookout if he is

1  Archanova

race 6    below average clarity

2  Happily   really responds to Moore in the irons with 3 wins and a 2nd in 4 mounts......solid Euro jock should be a ble to sit mid pack and save ground in this large field where many will be hung out to dry with wide trips.....only runner in the field with 2 Grade 1 wins

8  Significant Form   stout rider/trainer combo over the last two months to the tune of 30% win with their last 44.......not only does this Chad Brown two year old filly own 2 wins in 2 lifetime grass races but she also trains on the grass brilliantly.....a lot of the attention will go to Brown's other runner( our 4th pick) but I like this girl as she has a much better chance to work out a good trip with her tactical speed and a better post

6  Orbolution   two for two in two turn grass racing and both of the races were at the tough Saratoga meeting and by an average of more than 3 1/2 lengths.....that and John Velasquez knows her well-being up for all 5 lifetime races

11  Rushing Fall

7  Capla Tempress

race 7    below average clarity

3  Sharp Azteca   5 wins - a 2nd - and a 3rd at the distance......training lights out including a sizzling 5F drill since arriving at Del Mar.....trainer is dynamite with shippers......all three of his efforts on the east coast leading up to today fit solidly at the B C level

6  Mor Spirit   3 for 3 at today's one mile distance and overall is a brilliant 11 of 13 in the exacta.......away since June but with Baffert at the controls there is a high probability the he is ready for a top effort

10  Practical Joke   three-year old has been impressive in almost every career start and it sure seems noteworthy that he is a perfect 5 for 5 racing at one mile or less and two of those 5 wins were at one mile

8  Accelerate

9  Battle of Midway

race 8    below average clarity

1  Mendelssohn   stepped on very firm turf for the first time and nearly upset the apple cart running 2nd in a Grade 1 at Newmarket at 50 to 1......likely exited the race in good shape for his trainer to ship across the pond.....not that much speed in this race and he owns some....seems likely to hold the wood as long as possible....a good thing with the tight Del Mar turns

8  Voting Control   not very good trips in either lifetime starts with his latest especially hidden as he had trip trouble and sat too far off a pedestrian pace and still nearly won a Grade 3......Castellano is as good as it gets on the turf and I doubt this Chad Brown colt gets another bad trip.....very dangerous and at a price....... especially considering the connections

5  Beckford   OK on soft turf as witnessed by a nice 2nd in a Grade 1 in Ireland..... but.......it appears that he might be even better on firm turf and that is supported by his trainer shipping to S Cal where it is more likely for the ground to shake than for it to rain

4  Catholic Boy

11  Snapper Sinclair

race 9    average clarity

6  Forever Unbridled   Dallas Steward has done an excellent job of training this five year old mare when preparing for Grade 1 races where she has consistently fired strong efforts.....and that includes last year's running of this race where she was ring behind Beholder and Songbird at the wire....highly doubt anyone in this field could have done that

5  Elate   razor-sharp right now and her recent a.m. work suggests she is more than ready for today's big race with a good shot to make it 3 straight Grade 1 wins....... although if she wins I doubt it will be by the wide margins she won at in New York

2  Stellar Wind  such a quality race mare would easily be top selection if this race was at 1 1/16 or less where she is (12 10 1 1).....at today's 1 1/8 distance she is only ( 3 0 1 0).......absolutely dangerous but vulnerable some in the late stages

4  Abel Tasman

race 10    average clarity

5  Vigor  love the cut back in distance for this Mott speed ball as she has led by daylight at the 5F mark of all 4 of her turf sprints.....I also like her 3F bullet preparatory work on the Dmr turf 5 days ago......one of the east coast's top turf jocks wisely sticks with the Mott runner

2  Belvoir Bay   believe Pratt will save ground and take back some hoping the race falls into his hands.....and Peter Miller is awfully good with turf sprinters

4  Firsthand Report   consistent sort and two of the best in the nation at the helm in Castellano and Pletcher.......seems best in grass sprint races and she is coming off a good win against the boys in her latest....still she might need her very best today as this might be the toughest field she has ever faced

7  Snack Shack

9  Long Hot Summer

1  So Sweetitiz
