Del Mar for Saturday 4 November 2017

Del Mar and the Breeders Cup. You have to love it!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

1  On Leave   filly was in need of a rebound of sorts and she provided one at Lrl in her latest.....needs to repeat the effort today and if she does she should be tough racing at a turf distance where she is (4 3 10)....quality grass rider knows her well

10  Madame Stripes   consistent sort might be at her very best at Del Mar on the grass and her last three one mile grass races are solid 2nd place finishes that fit well here if Talamo can work out a good trip from a fairly difficult post

14  Sassy Little Lila  8 for 8 in the exacta when racing on firm or good rated route turf affairs .......nasty post for sure but she has an abundance of speed with only a couple of competitors with similar speed....so she has  shot at getting over to the 2 path or better by turn one....should be a player if that happens

9  Majestic Heat

7  Kitten's Roar

race 2   above average clarity

6  Bookies Luck   very sharp recent a.m. work......trainer is awfully tough with sprinters that have good speed and this two-year old Cal-bred has just that.....and one solid rider in Kent Desormeaux

1  Smoken   three straight 2nd place finishes in Cal-bred Stakes races......and the 7F appears to be  a plus for her and won't be for many in here.....only selected 2nd because the only time she had to break from the one hole she had a poor start

2  Night At the Opera   solid 2nd place finish in a small route Stakes race at Otp......that route effort she give her plenty of endurance late when push comes to shove in the late stages of this race

8  Shulace

race 3    average clarity

5  Sound and Silence  talk about an experience advantage for this colt.....8 two year old races so far (8 4 2 0) and all were overseas in turf sprints.......has handled 5 different grass courses to date so I doubt the change in environment will be a factor.....carried 130 lbs in his last.....120 lbs today might make him feel awfully good warming up

8  Out of The Flames   Euro filly took on the boys in her latest and nearly beat them despite a poor start......did lose to our top choice but by less than one length.....gets one of the West's top grass riders in Pratt who won 4 of yesterday's 10 race card

1  Fairyland   another filly taking on the boys.....one sharp trainer in Wesley Ward with grass sprinters......handled the one post at Sar just fine......should be in the hunt from the get go this time....cut back of 1/2 furlong appears to be a plus for her

2  McErin

3  Count Alexander

race 4    average clarity

7  Moonshine Memories   back to back Grade 1 wins and 3 for 3 overall with two of those wins on the Del Mar dirt...... and .....trainer Simon Callaghan has turned into one S Cal's top trainers joining the ranks of some very big names in the horse race game.....should be in the mix from the get go

1  Heavenly Love   nice forward move turf to dirt for this filly to win a Grade 1 and in his first lifetime route race.....decent post and like our top selection she should be forwardly placed.....works since her Grade 1 win at Kee hint she has never felt better

13  Separationofpowers   very nice two-year old filly for Chad Brown and company who I would have rated higher if she had drawn a better than the 13 post.....and not just the 13 post but the difficult outer-most post in two turn affairs

9  Alluring Star

3  Princess Warrior

race 5    above average clarity

3  Lady Aurelia   exceptional turf sprinter and with one fine trainer with sprint turf horse's in Ward.......3 year old filly carried 132 lbs against the boys at York in her last and still only lost by a nose....race prior to that again against males she beat 16 horses by 3 or more lengths in a Grade 1 at Ascot......should be tough as nails with a good post and rider

12  Pure Sensation   6 for 10 "at the distance" and ran 3rd in the BC turf sprint last year and did so at 6 1/2 furlongs a distance that does not suit her as much as 5 furlongs.....not an easy post but he has won from the 9 and the 12 posts in turf sprints the last two times he had outside posts.....trainer does well when he ships including to S Cal

6  Marsha   filly seems like the best of the Euro's (if you don't count our top choice as a Euro) and beat our top choice by a nose at York in the aforementioned race.....not impossible at all to do it again but she might be compromised some from sitting back in a race where the tight Dmr turn is a different animal than what she sees for the most part in Europe

1  Disco Partner

8  Cotai Glory

race 6    average clarity

11  Unique Bella   brilliant filly has won 5 straight by and average of over 6 lengths and she is capable running on or off the pace......and her trainer has been terrific with young fillies and not too shabby with young colts either.......believe she win might win by daylight once again

9  Finley'sluckycharm    8 for 10 lifetime on fast rated dirt and she might be at her best at today's 7F distance....that and she also really pops 2nd out following a layoff.......like the trainer when he ships.....not impossible to upsst our top choice but she better run her best to date

4  Finest City   won the version of this race last year and in general she seems at her best at 7 furlongs.......but like our 2nd choice she will need to run her best ever or hope the "Bella" falters one way or another

10  Highway Star

2  Paulssilverlining

race 7    below average clarity

9  Lady Eli   amazing how top-notch grass horses can be so consistent like this Chad Brown five-year old mare as in 10 wins and 3 2nd's in 13 lifetime starts.....missed by a nose in the 2016 version of this Grade 1 race.....that race was at 1 1/4 while today's is at 1 1/18.......and I believe she is better at 9F than 10F supported by a perfect 3 for 3 at the distance

14  Rhododendron   nasty post but owns a ton of talent especially racing off of 5 weeks or less....last race 34 days ago.....and that was a Grade 1 win in France at about 10F....and she appears much better suited to today's 9F......should have plenty of endurance coming off of the mini marathon she ran in her last

1  War Flag   seemingly on the improve with each and every race and if the trend continues today on the biggest race of her life she might save sound ground breaking from the one post and possible pull off an upset

8  Grand Jete

5  Wuheida

13  Goodyearforroses

race 8    above average clarity

10  Imperial Hint   facing easier but he has been crushing his competition out east....and in his last he broke the elusive 108 flat barrier in a race at Prx.......works since and the fact he shipped cross country while retaining Castellano all suggest he is up to similar today

8  Roy H  ultra sharp right now and two of his last 3 6F sprints are better than par for today's lofty level.....stout trainer with sprinters in Mr Peter Miller

2  Drefrog   would have rated higher if this Baffert speed-ball was a little more consistent at the start of his races.....if he breaks well his placement is likely placed too low as our 3rd selection

3  American Pastime

race 9    below average clarity

4  Lancaster Bomber   needs firm turf and did not get that in his latest endeavor which was at Ascot just two weeks ago....rider looked like he has just out for exercise......race 2 back at WO on lasix is very solid and disguised by a bad trip......the only other time he ran on lasix was in the BCJUV mile turf at SA where he ran 2nd and steady twice or could have won........today's jock was up that day and is as well today.....hopefully he is appropriately named today

6  Zelzal   very solid off of about 5 weeks rest as in 3 for 3 and 2 of those races were Grade 1 affairs.....that wasn't the case in his last run in France and the effort wasn't that bad.....5 weeks rest today....seems ready for best

5  World Approval   cut back in distance sure worked out well for this Mark Casse six-year-old as he won two consecutive one mile turf races......and his work tab since has last is very solid hinting he might be up for a 3rd in a row......Johnny V wisely sticks around

10  Ribchester

1  Midnight Storm

12  Roly Poly

race 10    average clarity

11  Bolt d'Oro   only two-year old in the race with two Grade 1 wins on the dirt and one of them was at Del Mar......and his last win which was his 1st at a route was one powerful effort/fig........should be tough to overcome if his big performance in his last didn't take its toll some

2  Solomini   exits the some strong race as our top choice and in my own figure work I have him running about 4L less of effort than the "Bolt"......better than the 7 3/4 lengths he was beaten.....and since the trainer is Baffert there is the obvious potential for more

6  Good Magic   still a maiden but don't let that fool you as his 2nd place finish in a Grade 1 in NY was impressive.....first in a two turn race and 1st as far as 1 1/16th....with his pedigree both should be a plus

5  Free Drop Billy

3  Firenze Fire

race 11    average clarity

12  Beach Patrol   1st ever at the distance of 12 furlongs and did he take a liking to the marathon distance running what might be his lifetime best....and that is saying something as good as he has preformed in his career for Chad Brown.... 2 for 2 since Rosario took over and both wins were Grade 1's......hard not to like

9  Seventh Heaven   filly loves the marathon distance and has beaten the boys at the distance in the past including in a Grade 1.......ask yourself why would the trainer ship across the pond following two straight dismal races.....my guess is that both those races were public workouts..... and if that is true..... look out today

3  Highland Reel   trainer Aidan O'Brien also trains our 2nd choice and whereas our 2nd pick will be a price this fellow who won this race last year at SA will be one of the favorites.....note that the jock who rode Highland Reel when he won this race last year now is on Seventh Heaven

8  Bigger Picture

5  Ulysses

race 12   above average clarity

1  Arrogate   nice rebound in his latest but the effort wasn't nearly what he is capable of.......but he might have greatly benefited from the effort as his a.m. work hints he is going to move forward.....lookout if he does

8  West Coast   talk about on the right end of the learning curve......last might get it done here and his trend hints he might even show more this afternoon.....Smith landed on Baffert's Arrogate......Baffert gets Castellano to fill.....that'l do ....LOL

11  Collected   triple barell action form the Baffert barn as he also trains this fine four year old colt who has won many races that are better than appear in print......he preforms very well with ample time between starts and gets it as in 2 1/2 months.....very dangerous sort

5  Gun Runner

9  Gunnevera

2  War Decree
