Santa Anita for Tuesday 26 December 2017

Not sure what the new format will be for The Racing Digest now that Santa Anita has two pick 5 wagers and Super High Five wagers on every race that has 8 horses or more. And if there are no winners it will be carried over to the next available Super High Five. So for today I have added additional horses in some of the races. Our new format should be established by the next racing day which is Friday. Hope you enjoy opening day.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  River Boyne   lone U S of A run was very strong as this colt ran more than 5 lengths faster than the winner of the other division of MSW one mile turf's race is another furlong longer but that sure appears to be a plus for this Jeff Mullins two-year old

7  Pali Hi   very solid turf routes in his only two lifetime races and his last is hidden by about 8 lengths of trip trouble......Mike Smith gets a chance to make amends this afternoon

5  Orbit Rain   solid improvement in his 2nd lifetime start and 1st at a route.......blinkers off for today and he is racing in his 1st ever on the sod.......not impossible but easy to make as our 3rd selection

10  Big Buzz

9  Fengari

8  Erotic

race 2    below average clarity

12  Candy Cornell   65 to 1 in MSW debut and yet ran 2nd only 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner and did so in solid time......4 drills since......very likely that he was not all that cranked up to go off at such high odds.......if that is the case.......lookout today

9  American Rule   any Baffert 1st time starter that completes his a.m. preparation with 5 consecutive gate works is D A N G E R O U S and then some

3  Kanthaka   MSW debut back on November 11th at Del Mar is better than it appears in print.......and the a.m. work since hint he benefited from the race where he went off "a no action at the windows" 17 to 1

5  Pepe Tono   trainer Victor Garcia snapped out of the doldrums towards the end of the Del Mar Fall meeting.....with that in mind the good-looking work tab for this 1ster seems more dangerous that it usually wold be......that and one of the better S Cal apprentice riders in a long time accepts the mount

1  Paddock Pick

6  Desolation Sound

race 3    above average clarity

6  Collected   (8 7 1 0) on fast rated dirt and a perfect 4 for 4 at SA......lone loss was in the B C Classic.....rider upgrade to Mr Money......very easy to make as top selection

2  Top of the Game   another who has been stellar at SA on the dirt winning all four of his starts on its surface and with today's rider Desormeaux aboard........trainer Cerin has been on an extended has been awhile since he had a Graded win but might get one here if our top choice falters

1  Hoppertunity   double barrel action as Baffert trains our top pick......late runner needs some decent heat up front and might get it with 3 of the 6 entered having some early gas

race 4    below average clarity

8  Mapit   seems like a good spot for a sprinter with some early speed to attempt a turf race for the 1st time........the filly owns a pedigree that should handle the turf .......those that have run haven't shown as much early speed.......nice a.m. preparation to boot

10  Sensible Myth   good MSW debut over at Del Mar sprinting 5F on the since the race are improved.....should appreciate the extra furlong and one half......hard not to see her being a major player here unless she ends up not caring for the unique SA hill turf course

2  Chickatini   wide trip hides a decent MSW 5F turf debut at Dmr (same race as our 2nd selection).....blinkers on likely to get her in the game of Eurton's better stats is 2nd time turf which of course is the case today

11  Enayat Alsalam   eventful MSW debut as she was squeezed very badly at the start (not a good thing in a 5F grass race) and then showed plenty of life........that and the breeder is someone I know and respect (but did not talk) and he is one sharp nice guy

1  Tell Your Mama

7  Californiagoldrush

race 5    average clarity

8  Spectre Bond   very nice pick-up of a good Mark Casse four-year old who has done little wrong in 2 lifetime starts.......he has two 109:3's one of which was at Belmont and the other at Del Mar......and Miller gets the fabulous S Cal apprentice to ride and as a team they have won 8 of their last 20

3  Red Lightning   lifetime best of 7 career races was his 2nd start of his career run off of 36 days 2nd out following a layoff with 32 days rest should set him up for another big run......another good rider/trainer combo in this case Desormeaux and Morey

4  Big Gray Rocket   lifetime best and by a wide margin was his MSW debut and the strength of the effort is somewhat hidden by a brutal fresh off of the bench today might lead to a big race for this Baffert colt who is working as if he is ready to rock and roll

1  Best Two Minutes

10  I Will Score

7  Junior Gilliam

race 6    average clarity

1  Kroy   three-year old Florida invader faces the biggest challenge of his racing career to date as this is his first attempt in a Graded race and a Grade 2 at that......but since blinkers were put on he is (4 3 1 0)........and.......he appears best on very firm turf so S Cal turf should be a good fit.....gets one of the USA's top jocks......owns the best early speed in a race that lacks the commodity.....hard not to like

8  Big Score   colt owns the best credentials in the race and might be at his best at the one mile turf distance ( 5 2 2 0)........right jockey to overcome the outer-most post in Prat.....and Prat knows this three-year old well-being aboard for the great majority of his 11 lifetime races

5  Bowies Hero   three-year old colt is 4 for 6 in one mile grass races and 0 for 4 at other turf distances.........but maybe more importantly he just keeps getting better......and better......and better......and better......and......

2  B Squared

race 7    average clarity

7  Paradise Woods   R Mandella three-year old filly is so much at her best at Santa Anita both in the a.m. and the p.m.......her last two SA endeavors were Grade 1 wins by a combined 16 echelon rider Pratt knows her well having been aboard for all 7 lifetime starts

3  Unique Bella   superstar filly picked the wrong time to toss a clunker as she was the 1 to 1 favorite in the FBCFM Sprint Grade 1.........needs a full rebound today if the "Woods" runs the effort I believe she will.....good sign that Mike Smith sticks with this accomplished Hollendorfer runner

5  Faypien   Bob Baffert filly has never trained better and her ability to take back early sure appears to be a plus in this spot that has significant early speed signed up.......and she gets a good off pace rider on her back in Van Dyke

6  Just a Little Hope

4  Mopotism

race 8    average clarity

2  Edwards Going Left   three-year old gelding has won his last 6 in a row when he races off of less than 6 weeks rest.....5 weeks and 2 days since his latest which was a win despite a tough trip......race lacks speed and he should be one of the horses sitting in the 1st 3 positions at the 1st call....all that and he is 4 for 6 at SA and 2 for 3 at the somewhat specialty distance of 7F

4  Favorable Outcome   3 wins and a 3rd in 4 lifetime sprints for this Chad Brown east coast invader.......trainer has had a terrific 2018 and he likely wouldn't ship cross-country with a given horse that wasn't ultra sharp

1  City of Light   most likely to grab the lead in this affair and that might be a dangerous proposition for his competition as he has been training as if he is razor sharp.......that and his trainer Michael McCarty has had a break out year

6  Pavel

9  C Z Rocket

race 9    average clarity

5  Spanish Hombre   lifetime best and one big number here was his race 2 back which was on the turf at one mile and at Santa Anita.....same post and same rider up today....the only change is a different but adequate trainer in Jack Carava

2  Incredible Luck   very solid work regiment for this Hendricks runner in preparation for his 1st race in 44 days.........seems highly likely to good journey starting from the 2 post sitting close up and saving ground......not my favorite rider in Blanc but he is seemingly at his best in route turf races and he knows this colt well as this is his 9th straight mount on him

11  Lazzam   trainer has awoken from a prolonged case of the doldrums........four year old gelding is a perfect 8 for 8 in the money in 2017 (8 1 5 2) and sure appears to be the most dangerous late runner in the race

AE 13  Mongolian Greywolf

6  Temple Keys

7  Ice Kat

8  Accountability
