Santa Anita for Friday 29 December 2017

I am not sure what the final new format will be for The Racing Digest now that Santa Anita has two pick 5 wagers and Super High Five wagers on every race that has 8 horses or more. That and if there are no winners it will be carried over to the next available Super High Five. So like Tuesday I have added additional horses in some of the races. A new format should be solidified sometime in the near future but not this week as I am swamped having to break down the positions of the extra selections.

The 2018 special publications are now available for purchase. As usual you can save some money ($36.50) by purchasing all of them as a package. The first special publication is Pegasus Cup Day at Gulfstream Park on January 27th

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

4  Chrisiscookin   7 lifetime races to date and his best 3 have come the 3 times he raced off of 3 weeks rest or less......race two back is very solid.........and back to the jockey (Guttierez) who was absent for one race......believe we have a better than 50/50 chance of seeing that effort two back

1  Thankful Every Day   SCRATCHED OUT   decent forward move 2nd out following a one year layoff......back in only 19 days this afternoon and with a useful 5F work since.......feeling good.......same or better seems to be in the cards for today

5  Am I Blue   MSW debut in Dec. of 2016 fits fine for today's considerably lower maiden level.......nice a.m. work prior to his 2nd lifetime start which was run a year later but he tossed a clunker.....continues to train as if he can run some.....deserving of another chance????......we shall find out

6  Majordomo

9  Taco Tuesday

3  Insubordination

race 2    above average clarity

6  Krissys Manicure  seems to need ample time between starts and Baltas shows patience and gives it to his two-year old filly......race two back run at SA at today's 6F distance is quite strong and disguised by racing wide and pressing a fast quarter.......that and even her latest effort might "do the trick" in this spot

3  La Chepis   likely needs to show a little more than she has produced in her last two races ........but......she gets such a significant rider upgrade that she has a decent chance at providing it

1  Lady Phyllis   so so 1st on the turf in her last but she also owns a pedigree that by my book is only "so so" for the sod.....back to the dirt today and might be muscled up as only a turf race (especially a route turf race) can do sometimes......dangerous sort especially taking into account the quality of the trainer and the rider

5  Kiss of Dahpespe

race 3    average clarity

8  Zipman   lone race down the majestic Santa Anita hill turf course is par like and visually was very impressive as this Bob Baffert colt was absolutely flying in the very late stages

4  Oiseau de Guerre   three-year old gelding has burned a lot of cash as she has yet to win despite going off as favorite 4 of 7 lifetime races ......the highest price she has ever gone off at is 3 to 1.......still she owns some big figs.....that and her best race to date was her only race down the SA hill where she ran 2nd despite a brutal trip......away since the hill race on 29 Oct. but works as if she is fully fit and ready

1  Shaky Alibi   SCRATCHED OUT    seems more suited to a turf sprint and gets back to one this afternoon.......away since 12 November but training very sharply and retains Bejarano......all three lifetime starts are par like efforts for the MSW level and unless you are a touring pro golfer "par" is good......cut back route turf to turf hill sprint is usually a good thing

11  Cascade Rock

10  Mesut

9  Pure Pursuit   SCRATCHED OUT

race 4    average clarity

8  Desert General   last three route races when competing at Santa Anita are very strong and the best of those efforts was run at today's 1 1/16th distance.......and the only other race that this gelding has run at 1 1/16th was a win and a win at SA

3  Lovely Anzi   six-year-old gelding has learned to take back since Baltas took over the training duties.....those races were on the grass whereas today's race is on the dirt......so if he will cooperate with the jock and handle some possible dirt in his face he will be a more versatile runner....thus....more dangerous

4  Popular kid   lifetime best was run the last time he competed in a dirt route at SA......that race was run 3 back on 13 Oct and also at today's 1 1/16th distance......last time Desormeaux rode this gelding?.......in the 13 Oct race.......hmmmm

1  Closing Time

5  Nap Lajoie

race 5    above average clarity

7  Pubilius Syrus   two-year old colt seemingly is very sharp right now coming off of an impressive G3 2nd on the turf at today's distance in a race run at Del Mar.....that and his trainer Vladimir Cerin is having a super 2nd 1/2 of 2017.........and he is ever so tough when he teams up with Mr. Desormeaux

4  Inscom   two-year old colt lost many lengths steadying and racing wide in his latest.....better post for Prat to work with and back to Santa Anita where he preformed well .....that and the jock should be able to save ground and sit on or near the lead in a race that seemingly favors those who do

2  Ayacara   all three lifetime route races (albeit on main track surfaces) fit decently here.......1st on the grass today but I like his pedigree to handle it......that and he might be up for his very best considering this is his 2nd out following a layoff

5  East Rand

3  Choo Choo

race 6    below average clarity

8  Wild Edie   after going off the favorite in her maiden debut and failing she ran a par like 2nd (with a gap of 6L to 3rd) 16 days later......she should be in the mix from the get go and a major factor in the outcome of this race if she holds form

14  Uno Trouble Maker   last appeared to be nothing more than a spin around the track in his MSW debut........3 works since........no spin around the track today racing at the MC30K level

3  Mariana's Girl   3 works since her vastly improved 2nd lifetime start run on 3 December hint she exited the race in good shape.......might be up for another move in the desired direction......and with a hungry jock in Geovanni Franco on her back......so far the new to the circuit jock has looked good

2  Bragging Rights

1  Boot Scootin' Kid   SCRATCHED OUT

5  Don'teatmycookies   SCRATCHED OUT

race 7    average clarity

3  Kentan Road   filly is on the right end of the learning curve and she continues to train as if the positive trend can continue.......and considering her latest endeavor would be tough here that makes for a dangerous proposition for her competition

6  Lake Time   seems best racing on the SA dirt and that is somewhat hidden.......lifetime best was her race three back at SA run off of 7 weeks rest........6 weeks since her last.......hmmm

5  Late 'n Left   very consistent efforts for this four-year old filly when competing on fast rated conventional dirt surfaces .........and a few of those races (like her latest) are hidden in strength by bad trips

7  Meet and Greet

9  Bad Ju Ju

8  Dalsaros

race 8    average clarity

4  Bacoli   significant rider upgrade for a turf race and back to the SA turf which this gelding seems to prefer.......rider/trainer have won 2 of their last 3 teaming up and the other hit the board.....hard not to like this three-year old in this spot

5  Rainbow Squall   very good races/history when the connections use a top echelon jockey......Mr. Rafael Bejarano sure qualifies for that

2  Red King   colt can really kick it in late if he gets enough pace up front.....not sure if he will here but if he does he has the right guy up in Prat (3rd straight mount on him) to find an opening and make him a major factor at the wire

3  Curly's Waterfront

11  Lori's Attitude

1  Royal Opera House

12 AE  Lauren's Ladd
