Santa Anita for Saturday 27 January 2018

Gulfstream Park  race12  $16,300,000 Pegasus World Cup Invitational

10  Gun Runner   I had Gun Runner as my 4th choice (rather embarrassingly) in the Breeders Cup mainly because I though he wouldn't be at his best running as far as 10 furlongs.....was I wrong about that as he dueled in a very solid set of fractions and still pulled away in the stretch......works are ultra impressive.......I am a total believer now

5  Collected   not sure what was going on in this fellow's latest but Smith could have had an easy loose lead if he wanted it but elected to take back (and get caught wide) .....were the connections trying to save horse for today......were they teaching him to rate better.......all this as the 3 to 10 favorite.....ouch........works since the goofy race are solid and better than he showed leading into his last......seems at his best at today's 9F distance

2  West Coast   Baffert has really had this colt ready when racing out-of-town as in 3 wins and a 2nd (by a head) in 4 races.......that and his work regiment since his 3rd in the BC Classic is fantastic even by Bob Baffert standards........likes to stalk or sit mid pack and that has a good chance of working out well in this affair that seems likely to yield a very solid pace

9  Toast of New York

4  Sharp Azteca

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Portando   solid work regiment for his new trainer since arriving from the east coast.....3 of 4 lifetime turf sprints in N.Y. fit fine and in the one that doesn't he stumbled at the start.......trainer has had a terrific 2017/18

4  Make It a Triple   trainer is stout 1st out following a claim and it is a good sign that Bejarano sees fit to rider thru the claim.......recent dirt races are very solid so if he can run as well in his 1st on the turf he can win this....but.....his pedigree for the grass is only so so

2  Full Access   cut back in distance should be a plus as 9F is much further than he wants to run.......only race he ever ran down the hill isn't much but at the time he was trained by a low percentage trainer.......definitely deserves another shot on the Hill

9  Closing Time

7  Chief Hosa

8  Fire to the Wire

race 2    average clarity

6  Beaumarchais   4 for 4 at the dirt distance of one mile......race two back which was his last at one mile fits very well and is a couple of lengths better than par for today's level.......only has one horse to put away to get what he wants as in a loose lead

3  Sheer Fantasy   recent a.m. work is improved.....brutal trip in his last - toss it out........like the switch to the Eclipse Award winning bug boy Edwin Roman and his 5 lbs weight break that he brings........colt appears to like the SA dirt the most

1  Kawara   Brazil invader is tough to judge how well he fits at SA.....he is (6 2 0 3 1) on dirt so he appears consistent.....and he is getting Lasix today for his 1st endeavor in the good old U S of A for Richard Mandella and company

race 3    average clarity

3  Miss Sunset   very dangerous speed in this spot that doesn't have that much.....and Prat has options as this four-year old filly is capable of sitting off of the lead and still winning.....such a deal

6  How About Zero   one for one on the majestic Santa Anita hill turf course and the effort was the best of her career......and she should have plenty of staying power late when push comes to shove racing off of a 8F grass race......looks like a major player today

1  Barbara Beatrice   good history racing off of ample time between starts like today.......very nice late runner who is 2 for 3 on the hill and would be rated higher if it wasn't for the fact that there isn't much speed signed up and she might be pace compromised

2  Cuddle Alert

7  Run for Retts

race 4    above average clarity

1  Edwards Going Left   4 for 7 at SA and 2 for 3 at the distance.....seems best competing off of 5 weeks or less between starts which is the case today......broke the 122 flat barrier running a very impressive 2nd in the 7F Grade 1 Malibu......hard not to like

3  Masochistic    Baffert takes over the busted (DQ'd) 2016 BC Sprint favorite (Ron Ellis) who has an abundance of talent and now gets America's best dirt trainer.......works are fantastic as you would guess they would be.......but his record at 6 furlongs is definitely a concern (6 1 1 0) or he would have been top pick

5  Tough Sunday   last two sprints run on fast rated dirt fit here and he might sit in a very nice stalking position for T C Baze who sure has looked good riding him since getting the mount 5 races back

race 5    average clarity

2  Black Site   major league trainer upgrade and the same applies for the change in jockey.........both lifetime races fit here .......and a forward move (with the positive changes) seems very likely

7  Our Tiger's Boy   dueled on a dull rail in his MC debut and predictably tired.....then in his 2nd start he exited the metal monster poorly and then rushed and once again predictably and rightfully tired......1st time racing as a gelding today might help his 3rd start be uneventful and give him a shot at the circle of joy

6  Lucky Sun   shuffled back and then ran OK after that in his lone race way back on the 4th of July.......returns with an extremely tightly spaced work series.......might be wound up like a top.......that and he takes the ever dangerous drop from MSW to MC.......seems very dangerous

8  Shackalov

3  Catability

5  When Jessie Walked

race 6    below average clarity

3  Hardboot   bad start in a Stakes race in latest and then showed life after being compromised early (by about 3 lengths) ........cut back in distance should help his endurance.........and he gets a significant rider upgrade especially for a race down the hill.......worked a very sharp 5F bullet drill one week ago.....believe there will be a stout pace up front playing into the hands of Nakatani who is awfully good with off pace types down the hill

10  Sunrise Journey   dueled in fast pace and still pulled away for a 7 1/2 length win at GG on the AW and earned a dent fig.......she has a good grass pedigree and I like that she ran well on the synthetic at GG as most that handle it run decently on the turf ......should be in the mix from the get go and with top turf jock in Bejarano

2  Heck Yeah   solid MSW debut win by more than 5L for this Baffert youngster......and like our 2nd selection I like his pedigree to take to the green carpet......good hill rider in Van Dyke who has been teaming up with Baffert quite successfully

12  Bookies Luck

7  Cono

8  Campaigner

race 7    average clarity

3  Matriculate   always leery of a drop following a claim but not in this case with this special 30K purse for Cal-bred 16K claimers on this day featuring California breds.....that and you have to like when someone as sharp as Bill Spawr claims back a horse like he did here with this six-year-old

4  Rocket Fuel   very strong race turf to dirt two back......so the D'A uses the same maneuver to get another big race out of this gelding......it's not rocket science

6  Guy Code   speed had a nice day yesterday and this fellow appears to have the most early gas in the field and with a 7 lbs bug boy up.......doubt he holds if the speed bias diminishes......... but is it doesn't....... lookout

8  Tough It Out

5  Native Treasure

race 8    average clarity

4  Camino Del Paraiso   five-year old constantly outrun his odds and he has been given a nice 2 month break......during that "break" he has put in a very impressive 6 works......that and his last win came off of a similar break.....draws Prat.....good post......hopefully poised to outrun his odds again

6  Rye   Bill Morey is as hot as it gets as in 7 wins with 12 starters at the meeting......five year old has won 3 of his last 4 grass races and is 2 for 4 at today's 9F distance......but maybe most importantly he fired one powerful run/win off of a 2 month break 4 races back.....2 month break today........hmmm

1  He Will   owns the best route turf credentials in the race and he seems to show up almost every race.......toss out last as Smith gave this fellow a wide ride.......like the switch to Bejarano who by my book is a better turf rider (not dirt) than Mike Smith......should be motoring late

7  The Big Train

8  Smokey Image

2  Accountability

race 9    average clarity

4  Charming Slew   eventful MSW debut for this N French three-year old filly as she ran wide and had to check a couple of lengths in the stretch.......two very reassuring 4F works since......draws Bejarano with Stevens riding elsewhere......hard not to like

1  Smoovie   by my book this O'Neill 1st time starter has the best looking work regiment of any of the 6 1st timers in the field......and contrary to the overblown fear of the one post and two post they have won 19 of the 66 sprints run so far.....and the highest % post on the dirt for all distances so far......the one post (17 for 91)....a healthy 19%

5  Champagne Honey   another 1st time starter that is training as if he is meant and ready for his debut into the wonderful world of thoroughbred racing.......and trainer Blake Heap has won with 2 of his last 8 MSW 1st timers.....dangerous sort

6  Inland Empire

11  Judicial

7  Swanee

race 10    average clarity

9  Gringo Star   showed life in all three lifetime starts including his latest on 26 Oct where he ducked in and had his saddle (or something) slip badly and lost all chance....it was in a race down the hill and was his 1st on the lawn....in my notes I wrote that he took to the turf quite nicely........blinkers on to help his focus....strong work series.......rider upgrade for a grass race only......has some early gas......enough for C-Nak to get a decent position by turn one.....dangerous and at a price

4  Smart Knows Smart   poor effort down the hill in his last his 2nd lifetime turf race........much better grass route race two back at Del Mar.....blinkers on today & 1st time gelding today......rider upgrade......meets leading trainer.......hard not to consider as a top player in this affair

5  Shaymin   trainer Ben Cecil is at his most dangerous 1st time he sends a given runner long.......that is the case today and with a recent preparatory work for this gelding that stands out as the best work (at least on paper) of his career

3  George From Tahoe

6  Jump The Tracks
