Santa Anita for Friday 9 February 2018

A little extra for your money (purchase) the next two race days as Friday has 9 races and Saturday has 10. Back to the usual 9 on Sunday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Cascade Rock   nice sprint prep in latest and very strong works since.....race 2 back at today's one mile distance is very strong with a good final time fig and a stout pace fig........elder statesman Drysdale has been hot.......it's nice to see considering his fabulous past history and at his advanced age

4  Gosilently   N.Y. invader ran a big race in his 1st run in S Cal racing a bit wide and doing so up on the pace........like our top choice his adjusted for position and pace fig is quite strong for the MSW level

5  Frankincense   Mandella is much more dangerous with 2nd time starters on the grass......so......even though his Santucci fig earned is 4 or 5 lengths less than our top two selections he should have more upside potential........Mike Smith sticks around to find out

1  Combat Zone

race 2    average clarity

3  Pasadena Princess   lone race of career was at a couple of M. C. levels higher and the effort/fig earned is better than par for today's MC50K level......love the tightly spaced interval training to wind this filly up

5  Flammetta   double barrel action from the Baltas barn as he also trains our top choice......exits a fast heat of Cal Bred MSW's where if she builds on the race about 4 or 5 lengths she will be in the mix for the right to graduate

1  Whatyouciswhatuget   trainer is decent sprint - route - sprint and the route race was on the grass which should help in muscling up this filly........she will likely need her best to date and might be up for it

race 3    average clarity

3  Irish and Lucky   trainer Vallejo has done awfully well with limited starters in 2017/18...........2nd out after the claim and drops one notch lower than the 8K she was claimed for........seems somewhat set-up for this afternoon's race......if that is so.....she should be tough

5  Kiss My Lulu   Morey is a gaudy (17 9 0 4) to start the meeting......so the significant and alarming drop bothers me less than it normally would........as the trainer and his owners might be getting addicted to that winning feeling.......gate to wire shot with this speed-ball who has a 5 lbs bug boy up

4  Just Bookin   yet another dropping to enhance her chances of getting to the circle of joy......good rider/trainer combo in Sanchez/Nunez.........likes SA but does tend to hang as witnessed by her 14 0-3-6 record at the Great Race Place

race 4    below average clarity

1  Majestic Design   when Richard Baltas takes over the training duties of a laid up horse and sees fit to drop multiple levels...........lookout

4  Dressed in Prada   7F seems like a good fit for this Wicker four-year old filly who has finished up her last two races strongly for a 2nd and a 3rd.....that and she preformed well off of short rest which is the case here

3  Miz Tianjin   like the cut back of one furlong for this Eric Kruljac filly who was able to make a decent move on the 2nd turn of a one mile race despite a slow start and some solid fractions.....she faded late.....might not today at 7F

5  Dadlani

7  Veiled Heat

2  Angela's Rose

race 5    average clarity

1  Saint Dermot   last seems like a needed race and possibly nothing more than a "gimme"........previous 3 races all fit and were run off of relatively short rest like today........that and his 2 best of his 3 races were run dropping down........20K in last.........16K today........hmmm

5  Southern Freedom   lowest level on the grass is 25K so Hollendorfer needs to turn to the dirt to get a level (16,000) where this declining 7 year old can win........that and he might be slightly better on main track surfaces

4  Dukes Up   Miyadi claim is 2 for 4 at SA and 1 for 12 elsewhere.........trainer is better than average 1st following a claim.......jockey Austin Solis has been good fit with 2 wins and a 2nd in three mounts on this gelding

race 6    average clarity

9  Gutsy Effort   five year old ran well in his MSW debut in early 2016 and then ran even better in his 2nd lifetime start in early 2017........obviously he has the ability to run well fresh.......if he is up to the 109:3 that he ran in January of 2017  he will likely find himself in the winners circle

1  Easter Morn   our top choice is a five-year old 3rd time starter maiden ........this gelding tops that as he is a six-year old 3rd start maiden..........nice return to the race wars on 11 Jan 18 running a 2nd despite breaking slowly and sitting fairly close to a solid set of fractions........3 reassuring works since the race hint he will run well again........mostly placed as the 2nd choice because he has broken poorly in both lifetime races and he draws the 1 post at 6 1/2F which can be difficult because of the gap

3  Wild Lando   bit surprised the D'A doesn't drop this one back into a MC50K and/or find a shorter sprint than 6 1/2F as this colt has been flattening out at 6F........but..........his last two preparatory works are improved and hint that D'Amato has tweaked something for the better

8  Animo

5  Air Jockey

6  Tatar

race 7    average clarity

8  Studly Perfection   I have to believe that Baltas really has faith that this three-year old will take to the turf as he sure ran well on the dirt when the raced was moved from the turf to the dirt......his effort was better than par considering today's higher MC75K level and was at today's one mile distance.....not the easiest of posts to clear from but Bejarano as awfully good with speed that needs to get over quick and that really is the case with the rail at 30 ft as turn one is on top of you

4  Cosa Nostra   GB invader hasn't been that impressive so far in two starts but he did move forward some in his 2nd start in the USA........if he manages another forward move he has a shot at taking down this race despite the jock who is 1 for his last 45 on the sod

7  Chop Chop Charlie   seems like a great spot for a 1st timer as the field is relatively soft especially if our top pick doesn't handle the turf as well as he did the dirt in his last.......works are up to snuff.....as is this youngster's turf pedigree

3  Gray Admiral

6  Lauderdale

race 8    average clarity

4  Ahimsa   beat a very strong field of MSW runners and did it in her MSW debut.......Smith wisely stays aboard........rather impressive that this Eurton filly with plenty of potential has been able to work 5 times since her 15 Dec debut

2  Show It N Moe It   best at SA and it really showed in her latest where she crushed Cal-bred fillies winning by 8 lengths and it was with 1st time Bejarano and her 1st at 6 1/2F.......6 1/2F today and Rafael like Mike Smith wisely stays put

5  Highland Lass   won her only lifetime start in a MSW race at Lrc 10 weeks ago.....works since suggest she is ready to roll once again off of the mini break......but she likely will need to be about 3 or 4 lengths more filly today to overcome our top two selections......not impossible but easy to place as 3rd selection

6  Emboldened

7  Ms Dupree

race 9    average clarity

6  Mizzen Glory   drop makes sense as this is start number 9 on the turf and this mare has one 2nd to her credit in 8 grass races....... a majority of her turf efforts/figs fit fine at today's lower level........that and she appears sharp as she was able to work twice since her latest and that race was only 19 days ago

9  Subic Bay   another dropping to be highly competitive......in fact this east coast invader has run better races than our top selection but isn't trained by as reliable of a conditioner as Phil D'Amato is

7  Hotsy Dotsy   likely needs lifetime best today if either of our top two selections run the race that I think they will......not impossible but easy to make as our 3rd pick-a-rue

4  Road Test

3  Agent Nine T Nine

5  Lethal Legacy
