Santa Anita for Saturday 10 March 2018

11 race card today (including 5 grass races) with rain in the forecast so basically I had to study 16 races even though I doubt they will take the Grade 1 in the fifth race off of the turf. Only the top two horses have comments and that will also be the case for Sunday because of limited time.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

If the race is taken off the turf:  7-9-6-12-8-3

7  Lontani   good work tab for this Bob Baffert MSW 1st time starter who owns a nice pedigree to handle the sod.......Baffert appears to care more these days about having some good turf stock as he sure has picked up his game as far as that is concerned

9  Capall   solid improvement in his 2nd lifetime start at GG.....that effort fits fine here if he can run similar in his 1st on the turf........positive switch in trainers.......and the right rider to guide this gelding along in Javier Castellano.......and if he does take to the grass he should get good up close position down the hill in a race that seems to favor those that do

8  Frenchman Street

1  Big Buzz

3  Goodwillambassador

12  Call West

race 2    average clarity

2  McKale   3 consecutive very impressive drills in Feb for this Bob Baffert 1st time starter..........the one that really stands out is the 1:11:1 has been awhile since a 1ster put in a 6F work as fast as that.....hard not to like

6  Bobby Axelrod   sure like the way this Peter Miller 1st time starter finished up his a.m. preparation for his MSW debut with 4 tightly spaced works and his last an impressive 5F gate work..........all systems go

3  Passionate Reward

7  Super Sal

5  Highly Distorted

race 3    average clarity

If the race is taken off the turf:   1-11-5-8-2-6

2  Fortune of War   seems like nothing more than a sprint turf tune-up in his last off of the 1/2 year layoff for today's 9F of turf where he fired his lifetime best the only time he has competed at the distance.........the effort is hidden as he was rank about 3L on the run-up and then was wide.......and his trainer Eric Kruljac is quietly having a very solid SA meeting

1  Well Developed   race doesn't really have that much speed and this gelding is the only of the speed types in here that has shown he can handle a decent set of fractions........he should be in control turning for home and will try to hold off the Calvary charge

12  The Big Train

6  Tartini

8  Accountability

10  Malibu Music

race 4    below average clarity

5  City of Light   four-year old colt has done little wrong in 5 lifetime races (5 2 3 0) including an upset win in G1 in his latest.......both of his lifetime wins can with ample time between starts and that is the case today

2  Horse Greedy   very impressive wide trip up on a hot pace and in a race at today's 7F distance albeit vs. softer.........but the Santucci fig he earned does fit he can run with as much effort and get a better trip-a-rue.......should be the highest price on the board

1  Edwards Going Left

race 5    above average clarity

If the race is taken off the turf:   7-3-5-1-8

5  World Approval   3 for 3 at one mile on the turf and one of those wins was last Fall's B C turf mile at Dmr........six year old gelding has won his last 6 racing at 1 1/16 or less........and if we get rain and the race stays on the grass he is capable of handling good or yielding turf

1  Free Rose   best grass jockey that this speed grass horse has ever seen in the name of Kent Desormeaux...........believe he is capable of rating just off of the lead and that seems wise here as there is plenty of speed signed up...........good turf history breaking from post one (4 2 1 1)

8  Channel Maker

2  Bowies Hero

7  Om

race 6    average clarity

1  Bolt d'Oro   only effort on the SA dirt is off the charts earning the kind of number that would make him favorite for the Ky Derby........and the race was at today's 1 1/16 distance.........likely will sit mid pack about 3 or 4 lengths off the leaders and make his move on the 2nd turn.......and if we get moisture in the track he owns as good a pedigree as anyone in the race to handle it

4  McKinzie   eye-popping efforts in all three lifetime races and the strength of his 2nd lifetime race is disguised somewhat by wide trip on a day the rail was biased........very hard to split top two decision came down to their pedigree to take to the off going

8  Kanthaka

3  Ayacara

5  Aquila

race 7    above average clarity

3  Allaboutaction   you don't see many Jerry Hollendorfer 29 to 1 winners like this colt pulled off in his last.....especially a 7L win and with a big fig.....and that fig is disguised by racing a bit wide on  a rail bias day and doing so up on the pace.......should be very tough today if he repeats the effort.......solid pedigree to handle an off track

4  Big League   seems like a good claim of a four-year old gelding who appears to be on the rebound........Treece is better than average 1st following a claim and he seems to have a good handle on his new shooter as he just worked a 46:2 bullet over at LA

6  Coils Gold

5  Tribal Roar

2  Stone Hands

race 8    average clarity

If the race is taken off the turf:   1-9-10-11-12-5

1  Ms Bad Behavior   three-year old filly sure likes SA on the turf or dirt as all three races are better than par for today's minor Stakes level......1st at a route today but owns a pedigree that should handle one.....and Richard Baltas is very solid the 1st time he sees fit to send a given horse "long"

9  Ippodamia's Girl   three-year old filly has some good early speed and she has been successful using it in her 3 grass route races.........2 for 2 with Bejarano up and she stalked the leader in both races.....and she was able to win one of those races with Bejarano from the 9 post which she draws again

8  Lexington Grace

6  Finess Bere

4  Californiagoldrush

2  Treasuring

race 9    average clarity

4  Rocky's Show   trainer Treece is doing better at SA than his (15 1 3 3) record would suggest.......four year old improved 1st out following the Treece claim in his since the claim are quite strong considering the low-level of racing offered here.....and Charles Treece is often at his best 2nd out following a given claim

12  Liberty Jack   most surprisingly good (actually call it great) SA meeting easily goes to William Morey (29 10 2 8)..........both efforts since Morey claimed him fit well here......lone race with Roman aboard was a 4 1/2 length win........and he owns a very good pedigree to handle the off footing

5  Dad's a Gambler

11  Bitte

3  Celebrate Life

1  Gotta Get Lucky

race 10    below average clarity

7  Accelerate   very consistent sort and especially of late with a record of ( 5 2 1 1) in his last 5 races which were G1 or G2 affairs........only time he raced as far as today he did not embarrass himself vs. two monsters.....that race like today was run 3rd out following a break........hard not to like

6  Fear the Cowboy   beat 8 of 11 foes in the world's richest race in his latest.....trainer is terrific when he ships with 33% of his last 132 shippers landing in the winners circle........and an astonishing 70% in the money.......that and he seemingly ships into one of the weakest Santa Anita Handicaps in years

4  Giant Expectation

5  Hoppertunity

2  Prime Attraction

race 11    average clarity

If the race is taken off the turf: 5-12-3-1-8-11

3  Pacific Strike   improving with each and every race and she showed she can handle 9 furlongs of turf in her effort 3 back........finally draws a good post as she has had to cope with the 12 - 10 - 9 posts in her three grass routes to date........Bejarano wisely sicks around

12  Curlin's Journey   improving sort showed that she can handle the 9 furlongs of turf beating 7 of 11 foes and doing so with not the best of trips......trainer Dallas Keen is 3 for his last 10 stepping up from MC to MSW (and 3 others hit the board)

2  Party Dancer

1  Hope Wins

11  Fluffhead

8  Heaven Escape
