Santa Anita for Saturday 24 March 2018

Just one week until Florida Derby Day and for those still interested in our special publication of the 7 or 8 Stakes races on the card please sign up as early as possible as logistically speaking it helps us out some.

Good looking card today and with some juicy carryovers.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

1  Comes the Dream   seemingly doing well in the a.m. and can handle the nine furlongs of sod with some give to it.....and many in here won't

6  Crown the Kitten   very competitive on the grass racing at the 32K visits to the winners circle.......seems like an overdue drop of one level to 25K......might have developed some hanger tendencies but I leaning towards that he hasn't.......we shall see

2  Eagle Screams   very consistent sort when competing on the grass or synthetic.......1st out following the Steven Miyadi claim and the conditioner is solid 1st after a claim and kind of hot of late........getting as far as 9F is a concern

4  Excessive Kid

7  Unusual Meeting

10  Little Scotty

race 2    average clarity

6  Paddock Pick   lifetime best two races are the only two that this gelding ran at 7 furlongs.......and his latest is greatly disguised by running 3 wide pressing a lightning fast pace and in a race where the winning time was run 10 lengths better than par for the given day.....blinkers off today to help him slow down some early

5  Once On Whisky   decent works prior to his MSW debut led to a nice 2nd place are far better than decent now.......seems highly likely to move forward this afternoon.......very dangerous Baffert 2nd time starter

1  Facts Matter   moved forward in his 2nd time start and will need even more today if he wants to overcome our top two selections.........right trainer/rider to make that happen in Hollendorfer/Roman

race 3    average clarity

4  Always Believe   very impressive start to her career in the winter of 2016 at SA........after those two promising starts she was laid up 8 months but failed to show much at all although she did win once on a muddy track.........laid up after the race which was 1 year ago but returns this time around with an eye-popping set of drills hinting she has been "cured" of whatever set her back.......might live up to her name today

1  Late 'n Left   good gate horse so the one hole bothers me very little.......seems likely to stalk our 3rd selection who I believe will be on the lead........and our 3rd selection might not be up to her best

5  Powder   if this speed filly is up to her latest she is the one to overcome as she sure appears loose on a lead......but.......her lack of recent a.m. prowess makes me think she might not be as sharp as her latest........but if she is she is the one to beat

race 4    average clarity

2  Bob's Bad Boy   very impressive 1st on the SA hill grass course........definitely warrents the move from MC to MSW racing.........and low percentage Mike Harrington is strong with the move (few are) as he has won 2 of his last 4

8  Hit the Seam   away since Sept but training as if he is very "meant and ready" fresh off the bench.....that and he finally gets to run on the grass which he is bred to handle in a big way........and we get a rider upgrade

6  Animo   bet to favorite in his MSW debut off of some stellar works but ran horridly.......still bet to 5 to 1 in 2nd start with a few more stout drills but finished way back once again........since the 2nd start he has continue to work as if he has talent........sometimes "morning glory's" wake up when switching to the last chance?

3  Fly First Class

4  Celturian

5  Sir Eddie

race 5    average clarity

3  Paradise Woods   Richard Mandella three-year old filly is so much at her best at Santa Anita both in the a.m. and the p.m.......her last three SA endeavors were very strong Grade 1 races (2 wins and a 2nd losing to the fabulous Unique Bella by 3/4 length) echelon rider Pratt knows her well having been aboard for all 8 lifetime starts

4  Skye Diamonds   believe this Bill Spawr five-year old mare is a little inferior to our other two choices but I can see her getting a perfect trip sitting a few lengths off a brutal pace if the 3 and the 5 battle it out hard on the front end

5  Selcourt   not out of this especially if she avoids a suicidal speed duel with our top choice.......she has won without the lead as has her speed foe......should be interesting

race 6    average clarity

8  Tengs Rhythm    lone lifetime race was run last June and was a very fast MSW the race this filly had a tough trip veering out from a very tough 10 post and then predictably was caught 4 wide in the 5F 2 yr old hint she is ready fresh.......should be tough if she is at this lower level

4  Palace Paynter   another racing off of a long layoff following her MSW debut.......showed little in her debut but seems likely to this afternoon as her work tab is very solid considering today's level of racing......10 lbs apprentice best start getting to the winners circle as he has been getting decent mounts

5  Summer Down Now   MC debut two back is a par like effort and somewhat hidden in it's strength......2nd out run at 1/2 furlong further is so so........back to 6F today......needs a rebound and maybe a little more

6  Lucky Lula

1  Quizlet

3  Two Timing Lucy

race 7    above average clarity

4  Quick Finish   on the improve with every start......last two racing endeavors figure wise are much better than par for today's racing level.....has to go bad not to be very formidable here

6  General Mach Four   lone lifetime dirt sprint (and at SA) was a 5 1/2 length win and with a low percentage rider up........away since May but returns with some strong drills and obviously proved he can run fresh off of the bench

2  Spokane Eagle   lone lifetime win came in his only sprint dirt race at SA to date.......and today we get a rider upgrade.......still he will need a significant move forward to overcome our top selection if he runs as well as I think he will

5  Treasure Hunter

race 8    average clarity

1  Calimonco Action   bad trips in both lifetime races hides an individual with some ability........trainer is often at his best 2nd out after a layoff and that is the case here......and we get a rider upgrade......30 to 1 in ML

6  Venice   yet to run back to back good efforts and her latest was quite good......but if she does she should have been placed as our top selection

9  Dee Way to Go   another who seems to be an every other type but if she breaks the mold today she has as good of a shot to take down this race as anyone in the field

4  Wampus

2  Mongolian Humer

8  My Princess Taylor

race 9    average clarity

2  Itsinthepost   two for three at the marathon distance and handles a turf course with some give to it......won this race last year and seemingly vs. a tougher group than today.......Baze rides this gelding every race so you have to appreciate his knowledge of what this fellow likes

7  Responsibleforlove   five-year old mare takes on the boys and she seems to fit decently number wise in her 11 & 12 furlong turf races when you take in consideration that she gets in with 9 lbs less than our top choice and 5 lbs less than everyone else.......trainer has had a very nice SA 2018 meeting

1  Rye   finally placed in a race as far as 12F and she sure screams "the further the better"........comes from far back which might be a good thing today if the turf following all the rain plays in favor of those who do

9  Hayabusa

6  Aquaphobia

3  Play Hard to Get

race 10    average clarity

7  Velvet Jones   shows hints of being a hanger but if she isn't all of her career sprint races look good in this spot and her lone lifetime win came the only time she competed at today's distance.......very consistent as the only time she missed the board in 9 lifetime dirt sprint races was in a Stakes race where she finished 4th

5  Sharp Holiday   seems at her best by far when today's rider has been aboard and Gonzo has not ridden her in her last 5 races.....he is the jock today and if she responds to him like she did last June she should be a major factor in the outcome of this race

2  Anita G.   5 1/2 furlongs seems like a good fit for this mare who might be ready for a solid effort off of the extended hiatus from the game as her lone lifetime visit to the winners circle came in her maiden debut

4  Singleforareason

6  Reckless Charm

8  No Comparison
