Santa Anita for Friday 6 April 2018

TAKE NOTE that there will not be any selections available for Sunday 8 April (see our calendar information) for Santa Anita. Basically it is R & R time to recharge my aging batteries.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Beauty Divine   3 wide trip up on the pace hides a nice move forward for this four-year old filly........but better than that her extremely fast 5F gate on March 16th hints Miyadi has tweaked something for the better........rather sure she moves forward again if she handles her 1st route.......she owns a decent pedigree for one

9  Dhafeera   showed brilliant route turf speed in her first ever in the USA......decent series of works since........Blanc has to go to clear quickly as the turn comes up quick with the wood 30 feet her chances if Blanc can at least get to the two path on turn one

6  Meal Ticket   lone turf route which was run at Mth last summer was decent (and somewhat disguised in its strength) and run sprint-sprint-route........two sprints followed by a route today.......trainer is cold but might jump-start things here

8  You Missed It

4  Chalky

2  Jazaalah

race 2    average clarity

6  Most Amusing   Baffert has this three-year old colt working as if the abbreviated sprint distance of 5 1/2 furlongs will be to his liking.......looks like he has some early gas.........Van Dyke and Baffert are 42% win and 71% in the money with their last 41 as a team

5  Highly Distorted   last appeared to be a tune-up and we should get to see what this decently bred colt from the Carava barn has got today........Carava has won 3 of his last 9 with horses' making their 2nd career race

1  Lontani   rider Martin Garcia is struggling but he does get "the other" Baffert 1ster and that is often a good deal.........not impossible

race 3    average clarity

3  Colosi   three-year old gelding owns two nice efforts done the SA hill grass course.......and his a.m. prowess has never been better.......jock knows him well having been aboard for all 4 lifetime starts

4  Cono   another who really appears to enjoy running down the Santa Anita hill.......retains Mike Smith for his only mount on the card.......and that is almost always a sign of a "live" horse

2  Vutzak   three-year old needs about 3 or 4 lengths of improvement to handle our top two.....maybe the change in trainers can help get that out of him.......Puype is a solid 22% win with his last 30 when he takes over the training duties of a given horse

7  More over

race 4    below average clarity

6  Dukes Up   tepid top choice in this difficult race to decipher gets quite the rider upgrade......combine that with the fact he appreciates the SA dirt surface the most (6 3 1 1) and it is enough to make him top pick-a-rue

2  Mercer Island   trainer William Morey has had one heck of a nice SA meeting and is quite dangerous 1st out following a claim.....that is the case here and the trainer must really like what he sees as he steps up his new barn addition multiple levels

5  Out of Patience   very consistent when placed in fast track route races at SA........and this claim back by Mulhall is now 3 for 3 in her barn....... with........ one win from before and two more since she claimed this fellow........why not make it 4 for 4

race 5    average clarity

1  Twirling Apples  only lifetime turf race run on a firm turf at today's one mile distance was a win........and the number earned in the race is better than par for today's 25 nw2 level......good post......same jock......solid preparatory drills.......all systems go

7  Hotsy Dotsy   race seems to set-up somewhat for an off pace runner which she happens to be.......should be rolling late......she does appear to be a hanger to some degree.......but then again she does respond well to Romans in the irons with a record of (5 1 3 1)

2  Oh Scatty Oh   improved grass horse since the blinkers were removed 4 races back.......still......she might need to pull off a lifetime best to find the circle of joy today

9  Road Test

3  Khaleesi

8  Subic Bay

race 6    average clarity

13  Bourbon Dude   step back up to MC30K seems to be warranted as this Dan Blacker colt made a nice forward move in his 13 might be difficult to negotiate or I would have rated this race "above average clarity"

3  Midnight Soot   takes that ever dangerous somewhat magical drop from MSW to low-level maiden claiming.......and for a trainer in Phil D'Amato who has had good success with the move..

7  Trojan Time   trainer owns a couple of stats that stand out here for this colt coming in from Golden Gate.......6 for his last 13 with shippers.......and........ 3 for his last 5 "1st start with trainers"........those two statistics do enough for me

10  Sierra Echo

12  Git On Your Pulpit

6  Fabrication

race 7    above average clarity

4  Rizzi's Honor   very powerful effort/fig in her latest for the 16nw3 level for the ladies.......race profile favors her mid pack style as there should be one lively pace in this affair with 3 of the 7 signed up being speed horses.......not sure if she is up to a repeat of her last but if she is she will be very tough

7  Tangled Up in Ju   one of three speed horses in the race but with a jock up who sure gets them out of the gate quickly in Maldonado.........last two times Machowsy (who also trains our 3rd choice) dropped this mare multiple levels she won and ran 2nd......very dangerous is she avoids a suicidal speed duel

1  Tee Em Eye   4 of the 6 races since Machowsky snatched up this mare at the claiming box fit well in this spot......and her last is disguised by a four wide trip and being blocked a length in the stretch.......apprentice rider needs to do better as she is only 1 for 25 in sprint races.......maybe she gets that 2nd sprint win here if our top choice doesn't repeat her last effort and our 2nd choice duels too hard early

3  Velvet Jones

race 8    average clarity

note: If AE12  Rockin Ready draws into the field make her the 2nd selection

1  Pacific Strike   improving with each and every race and she showed she can handle 9 furlongs of turf in her effort 3 back........finally draws a good post as she has had to cope with the 12 - 10 - 9 posts in her three grass routes to date.....1st time Nakatani.....hard not to like

4  Rancor   three-year old filly might have a fitness advantage over her competition coming off of two consecutive nine furlong races......that and she put in what might be her best work of her life........a strong 5F drill only 6 days ago

7  Movie Moment   bad trips in both lifetime races both of which were on the Santa Anita turf.......ran close to par for the MSW level when you adjust for trip.......Espinoza is off and G Franco on.......and that might be a good thing as Espinoza who is dynamite on the dirt has struggled on the turf for the last year or so.......three year old filly has a shot here

3  Party Dancer

6  Fluffhead

5  Mongolian Empire
