Santa Anita for Saturday 7 April 2018

TAKE NOTE that there will not be any selections available for Sunday 8 April (see our calendar information) for Santa Anita. Basically it is R & R time to recharge my aging batteries.

Fabulous 13 race card today at The Great Race Place with no claiming races.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Now Blessed   nicely bred filly winds up in the Sadler barn after one dull lifetime race at Belmont last year in May......and she sure appears to love her new surroundings as she is working as exceptionally well.......that and the rider/trainer are hot as a team

6  Whirling  hard to find a dull work for this Richard Mandella 1st time stater......that and I like that two of this youngster's last 3 works were out of the gate with the last put in only 3 days ago.......believe this filly to be meant and ready

1  Zusha   lone race for this Gary Mandella filly was a par like effort which was run in November.......retruns with a work regiment that hints she is ready fresh off of the bench once again

7  Mela Jones

2  Trust in Love

race 2    below average clarity

10  More Honor   two very strong sprint dirt races to start his career.......toss out last which was on an off track at a route........1st on the sod today in a race down the hill.......very good turf pedigree........actually prefer his pedigree more for the turf than the dirt......and considering how well he is run on the dirt he might be awfully tough on the turf

11  Desert Stone   Baltas has been very dangerous with the horses that he has picked up from the East coast.......and this laid up fellow might be up for a good race in his first on his new coast as he showed he can run "fresh" with a MSW debut at Saratoga last September that was solid

4  Implicitly   like the work pattern for this Clifford Sise first time starter who owns a good turf pedigree.....that and Mike Smith shows up on the horse hinting that he colt has some talent.......and Smith could use a win on the sod as he is a dismal 1 for his last 36

5  Scat Big Dad

12  Frenchman Street

9  Alfareed

race 3    above average clarity

1   Kona Coast   interesting clever placement in this Alw50,000s as this gelding is still a maiden but fits very well in this spot.......and his wide trip in his last somewhat hides the strength of his last run off of an 8 week break.......impressive a.m. work since his last......back in short rest for the 1st time in his life......rather sure he pops another solid effort

4  Trustworthy   3 of 5 of his lifetime route races are solid in this spot including his latest where Talamo give him a brutal trip as in way too wide while up close........see ya Joe hello our top selection he should be tough today

6   Taniko   likely needs slightly more than his latest.....and might provide as the only time this gelding ran of off short rest like today he moved forward.......not out of this if history repeats itself

3  Curly's Waterfront

8  Super Duper Cooper

race 4    average clarity

8  Show It N Moe It   seems at her best at Santa Anita where she has won 3 of her 4 lifetime wins......and all three wins were by wide margins.......nice pick up by Mike Smith with Bejarano on the sidelines from injury

3  One Fast Board   3 for 3 lifetime when competing on fast rated dirt......and two of those wins were similar to today's state-bred stakes race........that and gets the services of one of the best riders on the planet in Javier Castellano who is in to ride "Bolt" in the SA Derby

1  Spiced Perfection   hard trying consistent sort racing on the dirt......but this filly will likely need her top effort run on the 30th of August to take down this race.....not sure of she is up to it but if she is she has as good a shot as anyone in this race

6  Wishful

7  Blessed Lady

race 5    average clarity

5  Ms Bad Behavior   stalked a very fast pace and went on by the leader and drew off in her latest......rather impressive for her 1st grass race around two turns.......and Baltas is outstanding at getting his grass stock to stretch out even this case another furlong

4  Paved   strong 9F turf win to graduate two races back......then she beat the boys at GG in a non-Graded Stakes race for 100K at GG on the AW which was also at today's 9F distance.....hard not to like

6 Fatale Bere   brutal trips in 2 of 3 races in the U S of A and one of them was in the BC Juv Filly Turf where she was only beaten 2 1/2L for the win.....bred to run all day so another furlong should be a plus.......lookout if (1st time) Rosario gives her a fairly clean ride

2  Lexington Grace

1  Pulpit Rider

3  Treasuring

race 6    average clarity

4  Take the One O One   solid history on the dirt......trainer Koriner is very good 2nd out after a layoff and yet this colt won his 1st out following a 5 month layoff.....should be in the mix from the opening bell......Talamo knows him well having been aboard for all of his lifetime starts

3   Heck Yeah   3 for 4 lifetime and 2 for 2 on the dirt......blinkers off today for this Baffert colt.......and Bob is dynamite with the equipment change over his last 37 (37% win and 86% in the money).......hard not seeing this fellow being a major factor in the outcome of this race

6  Fire When Ready   on the improve with each and every race.....blinkers on and with vastly improved works (assuming he worked with them on)........rather sure his progress continues today.........has a shot at the circle of joy and likely at a bit of a price

2  Campaigner

1  Rewired

race 7    average clarity

3  Sawyer's Hill   best horse in the field if Jacobson can get as much out of him (1st after the claim) as Mulhall did........4 for 8 at the distance.......absolutely appears to be in control of the pace.....runs well off of ample time between starts and gets it.....stands out here if he hasn't "slipped" any

7  Cascade Rock   (4 1 1 2) since the blinkers were taken off......can sit close up in a race lacking speed.......Nakatani fits this 4-year-old well..........trainer Drysdale is having a rebound's nice to see for the aging Hall of Fame veteran

1  Accountability   used to have more early speed and my guess is that Castellano will sit closer to the lead and if he does that will put him in good position done the back stretch.....dangerous if our top selection doesn't fire

10  Malibu Music

4  Tartini

5  Fortune of War

race 8    average clarity

2  Conqueror   (5 2 3 0) on the dirt and 4 of those races were on the SA dirt.....and his latest is his best ever and is better than par for today's higher level......race lacks speed.........he really isn't a speed horse but likely will have enough to sit pretty in one of the 1st 3 slots done the back stretch.......and with one solid rider on a Cerin horse in Desormeaux

1  Sheer Flattery   last race fits very well effort/fig wise but his late running style might be compromised by a lack of early speed in this nw alw affair........we shall see

6  Swayze   east coast invader winds up in D'Amato's hands and he appears dangerous off of a decent work tab highlighted by a near bullet 6F drill only 6 days ago

5  Stone Hands

7  Rocko's Wheel

3  Clever Royale

race 9    average clarity

6  Justify   two monster effort/figs in both lifetime races and what a great move by Baffert to take the blinkers off in his latest despite a brilliant lightning fast 9 1/2 length win in his debut.......he learned to relax in his 2nd start and rate off the lead........that prepares him well for today and likely for the 1st Saturday in May

3  Bolt d'Oro   very special individual especially at Santa Anita.......continues to train like a happy healthy three-year old who will be one of the Derby favorites if he comes out of the race OK today

1  Instilled Regard   very talented but to date less talented than our top two selections.........seemingly not impossible but a no-brainer to make as the 3rd selection

7  Core Beliefs

race 10    average clarity

6  Enola Gray   D'Amato is dynamite with speed mile turf horses and this talented has an abundance of early speed......4 for 5 on the turf all of which are Stakes races and her only race at one mile on the grass was a G3 win and was run in very fast time......away for 9 months but all cranked up and ready to roll with fresh legs

7  Madame Stripes   plenty of speed signed up likely enhances the chances for this late runner........she will need a rebound as her last was a little dull but and her last preparatory was an impressive 6F on the SA training track.........and Desormeaux sticks with her........very dangerous

5  Thundering Sky   likes the SA grass course and seems best taking pack off of the pace and that should occur here

3  Beau Recall

2  Sophie P

4  Midnight Crossing

race 11    average clarity

3  Midnight Bisou   very strong efforts better than par for today's higher level for the Bill Spawr three-year old filly......good post and with old man Smith who sure still knows how to win the "big" races

9  Thirteen Squared   Bob Baffert filly has a shot to hit pay dirt if he can get a little more staying power out of her......if anyone can do it it would be Mr Baffert

6  Exuberance   very much like Baffert's filly in that this gal needs to avoid flattening out when push comes to shove at the 9F distance

7  Spectator

2  Spring Lily

1  First Dudette

race 12    average clarity

2  Pantsonfire   two races really stand out for this Baltas filly and those were run at 9F and 10F on the grass which were the furthest races of this gal's career......that and her latest at 8F is rather good.......sure seems likely to have plenty of run late at today's 9F distance

10  Queen Blossom   runs well with ample time between starts and gets that today......owns some very solid better than par efforts/figs for today's level of racing.......she does seem to prefer longer distances but 9F might be long enough

1  Laseen   consistent sort refused to run in her last which with her consistency and demeanor was quite strange.......chalk it up to everyone has a bad day once in a while

7  The Tilup

6  Dalsaros

8  Nachi

race 13    below average clarity
