Santa Anita for Friday 13 April 2018

Our special publication for Saturday which covers 4 Stakes races at Keeneland and 4 Stakes races at Oaklawn Park is still available for purchase. 6 of those races are Graded affairs.

Some cheap races being offered today at Santa Anita but handicapping wise it still appears to be an OK card.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Orejas   best rider aboard this gelding since Baltas claimed 7 races ago and since the Baltas claim he is (5 2 1 1)........drops to a level that seems logical........all that and he appears to be loose on the lead

5  Roman Tizzy   trainer has had his best SA meeting in a very long time.......and that winning feeling is addictive so it is not surprising that Cerin and company drop this hard trying gelding to the bottom level claiming

2  Southern Freedom   seven-year old gelding is (8 3 2 1) at the distance and has shown enough in his limited races on conventional dirt to make me think he can handle it well enough to run competitively at today's 6,250 level

race 2    average clarity

7  Dare to Enter   sure like the step back up to MC30K today which suggests this gelding came out of his latest in good shape......that and he appears to have a good opportunity to stalk our 3rd choice who is suspect to hold together in his 1st ever at a route

4  Sharp Ruler   solid move forward in his 2nd lifetime start and that is somewhat disguised by a bad trip.......so 2nd out following a layoff might be a good thing for this Harrington price shot attempting a route for the 1st time in his career.......that and the blinkers go on for today suggesting the connections want him to sit closer early

2  Write Me a Song   suspect pedigree to take to route racing but this three-year old sure appears to be loose on the lead......he might be relaxed enough to overcome his weak route breeding

1  Ministertomyheart

race 3    average clarity

2  Paprika   exits a fast heat of maiden claimers where this 3-year-old filly (who had a tough trip) earned an adjusted for trouble Santucci fig that is 2 lengths better than par for today's MSW level.......that and her pedigree to handle the grass is awfully solid for  Cal-bred

6  Bella Sierra   six-year-old mare is the only runner in the field with turf experience and her two grass races down the SA hill are not too bad and with a low % rider on her back......meets leading jock up today.......hmmm

1  Bad and Bougie   nicely bred Cal-bred appears to be working well enough to be ready to roll in her MSW debut and if she is this field appears fairly weak and vulnerable to a new shooter with ability

5  Whoa Nessie

8  Counting

race 4    below average clarity

7  Shackalov   race seems to set up some for those taking back some off of the lead.....and this three old fired his best two lifetime races doing just that in his two one mile route races at SA

2  Kaleidoscope   believe this three-year old gelding is feeling good as he just popped a solid bullet work on the SA training track......that and Roman and Hess have been on fire as a team over the last 6 weeks or so

3  Studly Perfection   three-year old has other speed to cope with in this field but if he gets anywhere close to the pace he set in his latest (albeit on a good track) he will be loose and very dangerous

6  Elevated Knight

race 5    below average clarity

4  Neon Gypsy   toss out her latest on an off track as her pedigree to handle an off track is poor........won her only sprint albeit on the AW but she also ran very well in a grass route.......that and Desormeaux sticks around after easing her on an off track in her last

7  Cynthiana   drop into maiden claiming makes sense as this filly has not earned her keep in 2017/18 earning only $21K......she showed she can handle the turf in a route but this is her 1st on the hill.....fits very well he she takes to slope

3  Dr. Ann   might be able to grab the lead in this spot without much speed.......Diego Sanchez has only one win at the meeting in 24 mounts but it was with Doug O'Neill.........that and Sanchez is a decent turf rider likely better than most S Cal players realize

2  Zero Zero

1  An Eddie Surprise

race 6    average clarity

6  Blame the Weather   dueled on a dull rail in her latest and predictably tired......cut back of a full furlong appears to be a plus especially with one of the better gate breaking jocks up in Maldonado to grab the lead and hopefully never look back

3  Tengs Wonder   MC debut is better than appears in print and part of that was a slow break from the gate.......blinkers on today so breaking better is likely........and if this filly does just that she should be up close and with only 113 lbs on her back with the slowly improving bug boy Asa Espinoza

7  Topaz Time   a turf route might have really muscled up this mare as she popped a vastly improved work 12 days after her turf race........that and she was entered for M50K but did not draw in from the A.E. list and now races in a M20K........hmmmm

9  Dee Way to Go

10  Spacerika

8  Creative Spark

race 7    above average clarity

6  Estherfourfourteen   both racing endeavors at SA fit solidly and then some for today's lower level of racing and one of them was a winning MSW debut.......so fresh off the bench might be a positive for this three-year old filly racing in a claimer for the 1st time in her career

1  Cinnamon Twist   2 of the youngster's last 3 races fit well in this spot and today she gets a rider upgrade in Talamo who owns the lone lifetime win for this filly and it was a 4 1/4 lengths win at that

2  Condi   on the right end of the learning curve and if the trend continues today she seemingly has as good a shot as anyone to take down this affair

4  All Net

race 8    below average clarity

5  Silverspun Pickup   vet scratch on 16 March but it appears as if Machowsky has taken care of what ever was bothering this filly as her a.m. work is vastly better since........1st on the grass but owns a good pedigree for it.......should be in the mix from the get go and that is where Pedroza likes to be

7  Halo Darlin   best turf credentials in the race and she showed she can handle the tricky down the hill SA turf course........placed 2nd mostly because she appears to be a hanger of sorts

6  All of a Sudden   1st time D'Amato today and that is often a dangerous thing........and the stout conditioner of grass horses wisely puts his new filly in her 1st grass race which she owns a strong pedigree for

8  Promnesia

10  Lady Espionage

1  Li'l Grazen
