Santa Anita for Saturday 28 April 2018

2018 Kentucky Derby day full card selections (last year 14 races) for Churchill Downs on May 5th are now available for purchase for $36.95. The selections will be sent to your email at about 4 p.m. pacific time on Friday night, May 4th.

Not that much quality for a Saturday card at Santa Anita but an intriguing one that might yield some prices.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

8  Mrasell   last was rather poor.......what we need is her effort 2 back which was strong and disguised by a bad trip in a small Stakes race.......drop into high-priced claiming makes sense by the Baltas folks as she has only earned chump change in her 3 USA starts for her new barn........time to cut into the red ink

6  Cute Knows Cute   latest racing endeavor (albeit on the dirt) fits fine as in better than par for today's racing level.......showed she can motor OK on the sod where she tired badly but dueled in one brutal 1st quarter in a 8F turf affair.........away since November but she is training as if she is fit enough to handle the 6 1/2 furlongs down the hill

4  An Eddie Surprise   seems likely to sit in a nice ground saving mid pack or stalk position which has previously led to two 2nd's and a 1st in 3 races on the majestic SA hill grass course

7  My Masterpiece

5  Neon Gypsy

10  Theodosia

race 2    average clarity

7  Chiksika   Kathy Walsh five-year old is racing off an extended hiatus from the game of 14 months but he drops precipitously and he ran well in his career the near bullet 3F speed work to finish his a.m. preparation as this is his 1st ever in a sprint

2  Lucky Sun   Miyadi is often at his most dangerous with the sprint-route-sprint maneuver and that is the case today for this three-year old......and his sprint two back is par like

1  Over Promised   new to the S Cal scene trainer Falcone has been firing on all cylinders for the most part and he appears to realize this youngster is best in sprint races........and his lifetime best was the only time he has competed at today's 6 panels on a fast rated track

3  Captain N. Barron

4  Royal Seeker

race 3    average clarity

1  Fender Bender   race lacks early speed and he appears to have the most and take note that speed and the inside had a good day yesterday.......only race at 6F was run 3 back at Tup in a final time of 109:4 and she was beaten less than 2L for the win.......I highly doubt that anyone in this race that has raced could come close to that at Tup

8  Bless His Heart   work regiment for this Palma MC 1st timer is similar to a couple of MC 1sters that he has won with in 2018.......that and outside of our top choice those that have raced sure haven't shown much

4  Fabrication   fires a decent race now and then but needs to overcome his tendency to hang in the late stretch when he jock for the 1st time in 8 races gets a try........maybe Pedroza will fit better........we shall see

6  Downside Up

2  Real Quick

race 4    average clarity

3  Queen Blossom   very solid efforts/figs in her last two 12F marathon grass races and latest one run two back in mid January is disguised by about 7L of trip trouble.......see ya Blanc......hello Prat....... making for a rider upgrade

6  Plein Air   8 for 11 now for this overseas invader who won like a good thing in her 1st in the USA.......runs extremely well with ample time off between starts and Baffert wisely gives it to her......should be in the mix from the get go with a decent shot of making it 2 for 2 for her new barn

4  Causeforcommotion   likely needs a little more than her latest couple of races and might provide as the only time that this filly ran in a marathon (11 furlongs) she ran by my book the most impressive race of her career........she sat way too far off a pedestrian pace and still came flying late despite running wide.......trainer is quietly having a good SA meeting

race 5    average clarity

1  Soi Phet   can't ever remember selecting a 10-year-old to win a Grade 2 but I am here as this is one weak looking S Cal G2.......gelding loves contact to the front end of things and should get that here and with Desormeaux back up after being absent for a race

4  Dr. Dorr   lead should go to this Baffert five-year old or our top pick......soft time and a loose lead (setting a very doable pace) led to an easy small Stakes win in his last......likely will need more today and might provide it coming off what was likely a stress free race

6  Prince of Arabia   connections will have their fingers crossed that our top two picks press each other hard in the early stages..........if they do this Cassidy 5-year-old might have a shot at a small upset

race 6    average clarity

6  Hootie   four-year old colt just popped his lifetime best in the 17 Feb version of the 10F (furthest he ever has run) turf nw alw last time he has a good chance to be loose on the lead but if he is not he is capable of running well without the lead......such a deal

1  Oscar Dominquez   gelding is by far at his best at today's 1 1/4 turf distance and few in here can say that.....should be closing the  fastest of the many late runners in this affair and with one dangerous grass rider up in Desormeaux

4  Mackie's Water   2 for 2 at SA on the grass with blinkers on.....both of those wins were at 9F in the Spring of his 2-year-old year hinting that he should be capable of 10F now the he is a year older.......not sure if he is ready off of the long layoff but if he is I like his chances

5  Mesut

7  Acker

race 7    average clarity

1  Liberty Jack   seems like a good spot for a sprinter attempting to go a route for the 1st time as he showed much better early speed (and final time) in his latest.........that and the bug boy Ceballos has been at his best by far in dirt routes

4  Dad's a Gambler   very consistent for a cheap horse (12 1 5 5 1).........only route race was run two back and is better than it appears in print.......and he just popped his lifetime best racing at 6F in his last.....not out of the win picture by any means

5  Wise Curlin   only two races on main track surfaces when racing around two turns without blinkers have led to a win at SA in his latest and a nice 2nd place finish at GG 8 races back.......dangerous sort

3  Pappou

race 8    average clarity

3  Captain Buzzkill   away from the game since early September but sure appears cranked up enough to be ready.....and if he is lookout as has two lifetime races both on the grass (albeit in route grass races) sure look good in this spot.......the strength of both efforts is hidden........1st on the hill is a small ? mark........but a ? mark at a 12 to 1 ML

8  Rumpus Cat   good 1st on the hill in latest but might need a little more to get to the circle of joy today......rider upgrade and/or back in short rest might provide it

11  Jimmy Chila   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  believe this colt is better suited to a sprint and gets back to one following 4 route races......should have plenty of endurance when push to come shove coming off of multiple route races

2  Capall

5  Breakers Isle

4  Passionate Reward

race 9    average clarity

5  Miss Ricochet   well proven that she is more than capable racing "fresh" and she is 6 months fresh today.....that and Glatt is ever so dangerous with "fresh" sprinters........rather sure this laid up MSW runner is ready to roll

7  Loving Linda   solid one length better than par (adjusted for trouble) MSW debut 4 weeks ago.........3 very reassuring works since......should be a major player

2  Coco Kisses   MSW debut fits fine but his 2nd start does not......needs a rebound........tough call if we will see one or not.......but still dangerous enough to make our 3rd pick-a-rue

6  Fight Lika Girl

3  Got an Obsession   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE

race 10    below average clarity

3  Beat the Bushes   trainer does super with limited starters and this filly is coming off of her lifetime best at Los Alamitos and with a new rider (and by my book an upgrade) for the 1st time in 7 races........toss out her lone effort at SA as she had a bad start which usually is not the case......she should be in the mix from the get go

5  Allie's Love   last 3 of 4 races fit decently.........continues to train like a happy & healthy individual for Art Sherman and company.......very dangerous

6  Duranga   appears best in sprints and she finally gets to race in one.........a suspicious drop for sure but she does retain the red-hot of those flip a coin types that I despise

2  Cow Dog

7  Estherfourfourteen

race 11    average clarity

9  Skelton Pass   Jacobson is not afraid to drop a given horse significantly in order to win.......that appears to be the case here.......he does not drill his horses too fast yet this one popped a speedy 3F bullet.......rather sure this fellow is well-meant today...... and....... very consistent on the SA hill

8  South Americain   continues to train like a better individual than he has been showing........believe that will finally change this afternoon for this four-year old gelding

12  Calvert Street   away since last August and returns with a new trainer......almost always like when a conditioner takes over the training duties of a new horse and they drop.....often times a trainer will agree to take on a new shooter if the connections are willing to place a given horse where they can win

10  General Ike

2  Yes Yes Yes

6  Executive Cat
