Santa Anita for Friday 4 May 2018

2018 Kentucky Derby day full card selections (last year 14 races) for Churchill Downs on May 5th are now available for purchase for $36.95. The selections will be sent to your email at about 4 p.m. pacific time on Friday afternoon, May 4th. Please sign up as early as possible as logistically speaking it helps us out.

NOTE:   Just like today Saturday's selections at Santa Anita will also be posted by 5:30 a.m. pacific time because of the early start at Churchill Downs.

NOTE:  We no longer are giving a 6th selection for the Super High Five fields with 9 horses or more because of the lack of play in the new exotic bet which in my opinion should be dropped.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

6  Time for Kisses  some years Sherlock is formidable in the early two-year old 4 1/2 furlong maiden races.......his filly is training like she owns early speed and with only 4 1/2 panels to run......hard not seeing her fit well here in this 1st 2-year-old race of the year

7  Quant Savant   last three works for this O'Neill two-year old 1st time starter are decent........and in this weak looking two-year old group "decent" appears awfully good......rather sure she will be a major factor in the outcome of this race

3  Rollinga   works for this Freeman 1st time starter are not fast but this filly is the only one who has worked as far as 5 furlongs......that might help her staying power when push comes to shove in the late stretch

4  Awepollonia

race 2    average clarity

7  Lady Mamba   all three lifetime grass races fit well here and she appears to be the controlling speed........continues to train like a happy healthy filly for Peter Eurton and company

5  Jazaalah   four year old filly has outrun her odds in her last 3 races which includes her 1st ever in the good old U S of A in her latest.........seems likely to move forward 2nd out following the 6 month layoff........that and look for her to show more speed as she had some in GB

4  You Missed It   four 2nd place finishes in 5 grass races on firm turf to date.......she has challenged the leader in all of them and failed to pass in any of them.......same goes for her two dirt races.........can you spell "hanger".......surprised they haven't tried the blinkers on yet

2  Meal Ticket

race 3    average clarity

5  Princess Areni   smartly placed in a MC75K (running 2nd) following an impressive MC30K debut where she broke poorly and rushed (never a good thing) and still was able to place 2nd.........small drop to MC50K makes sense......last fits but her debut effort would be very tough with of course a better trip-a-rue

4  Vinaka   lone race run on fast dirt (July 1st 2017) fits very well in this spot.......returned in Jan in a turf race - nada......then caught an off track in March - nada........back to fast today and runs in a maiden claimer for the 1st time.......dangerous sort

1  Summer Down Now   nice move forward in her latest.......and Tom Bell sees fit to step her up to MC50K after 3 lifetime starts at MC30K......might be even sharper.....lookout if that is the case

race 4    average clarity

4  Topgallant   exits a very fast heat for the given level where being beaten by 9 1/2 lengths was still a par like run........toss out his only turf race as this gelding stumbled very badly at the start compromising his chances......and he did show life in the race from his dead last early position.......dangerous and maybe at a handsome price

8  Builder   three-year old has run well on the dirt and the AW.....1st on the grass today and his pedigree for it seems better than his pedigree to handle main track surfaces.......that and he has enough early speed to clear in this spot full of "slow early" foes

5  Swinging Star   drop makes sense as this gelding hasn't earned much following his graduation day on 16 Jan 17.......runs off of short rest today and the only two times that he has in the past he ran well

1  Dr. Troutman

6  Run Like Rhett

race 5    average clarity

6  Bargaining   Jacobson is never afraid to drop a horse to win so when he moves up a horse a couple of levels as he is here with this gelding you better take notice........that and this six-year-old is capable of going eye to eye on the front and still stick around in the stretch......few can

2  Junior Gilliam   plenty of early gas in the race should set things up well for this filly who likely will sit close to the rear of the field......just claimed by Sadler and he goes to his top guy of late in T C Baze.........hard not to like

5  Van Lingle Mungo   very consistent sort on the AW or the conventional dirty especially at today's distance......but.......he sure likes to hang when it counts the in late stretch

race 6    average clarity

5  Cool Green   away for 25 months but returns as a 1st time gelding and a new trainer in Keith Desormeaux ........he acts as if the combination is working out in a big way as his a.m. work is stellar.......that and his lifetime two best races were the only two times he ran on firm rated turf

2  El Tovar   very consistent on the SA hill and he often has had to face better......likely very cranked for this race as he once again has to enter for the optional 16K in order to face allowance Cal-breds........and at that claiming price he likely will be led away by another barn following this race......hopefully for his connections from the winners circle

8  Insubordination   seems to own the best early speed in the field and gets in light with the 5 lbs bug boy up......youngster like most apprentices struggles on the grass (1 for 27) but still seems quite dangerous if he gets loose here

3  Leroy

4  Preacher Roe

race 7    average clarity

2  Myrcella  (4 3 0 1) at today's distance of six furlongs and this filly had a bad trip in the 3rd place finish.............Tup invader seems very sharp right now and has a trainer in Molly Pearson who knows what it takes to win in S Cal

7  Midnight Summer   somewhat suspicious drop following a decent layoff run in her last.......but less so when the conditioner is Peter Miller who is seldom afraid to lose a horse.......if she is still relatively healthy she will be tough at today's lower level

6  Bonneville Flats   another suspicious drop but this three-year old filly did work awfully well just 6 days ago hinting she is doing OK.......what she needs is her race two back which if she provides it would make her rather formidable today and rated too low

4  Allie's Love

8  Chiefs Lil Pearl

race 8    below average clarity

4  Argosy Fleet   monster efforts in both lifetime starts for this Bill Spawr colt and they sure fit well here if of course he is ready off of the 10 month tab says - yes he is

5  Stone Hands   Gutierrez fits this O'Neill four-year old well as does the Santa Anita dirt surface......recent drills are quite a bit better hinting at a move forward today.......lookout if one does occur

6  Serengeti   one of three lifetime starts is extremely stout and was run back in 15 days following his MSW debut last might need today's layoff run.....but then again he might not as Baffert is the trainer......tough call

race 9    below average clarity

7  Himmah   tepid top selection might be a gimme/go scenario and if that is the case lookout as her "gimme" was rather decent......that and her trainer Mark Glatt is 2 for his last 7 MC to MSW

9  Loving Moment   Geovanni Franco needs to make good use of this girl's tactical speed to get on over to at least the 2 path on turn one........if he gets that accomplished I like her chances

3  Into Glamour   sure like the turf sprint to turf route maneuver for this three-year old running 2nd out following a layoff......but......she will need to run better than she did in her lone turf route run last November.......right turf trainer in Baltas to get a better route turf effort out of her

1  Bella Signora

5  Pacific Strike
