Santa Anita for Saturday 12 May 2018

Good looking race card at Santa Anita for Saturday. Be back with you for nine more races on Sunday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Avalanche   seems best at SA in turf route races and if his last is any indication he appears to appreciate the one mile turf distance at SA the the 7 April race he ran a solid time despite running wide some and getting blocked and bumped some on the turn and stretch

3  Radio Silence   very promising two-year old campaign in Ireland........not so hot at three and so far at four.........but his recent work prowess hints Baltas has tweaked something for the better........we shall see

5  Temple Keys   double barrel action from the Baltas barn as he also conditions our 2nd choice.........the "Keys" finally woke up in his latest and likely feels good for Baltas to protect him in a nw alw race........that and he gets a rider upgrade in Prat especially for a grass race

8  Fashion Business

4  Malibu Music

race 2    average clarity

5  Foxy Fresh   trainer Reed Saldana is solid 1st following a claim stepping a given horse up running this mare back for the 8K she was taken for makes her very dangerous this afternoon

2  Coronado Cool   race shape sure seems to favor someone who can come from out of it like this five-year old from the Eric Kruljac barn.........significant drop is somewhat suspicious but I like that G Franco stays with the mare with 2 wins in 3 mounts

1  Candy Pink   dangerous high percentage small circuit trainer in Jose Avalos and especially when he rides Juan Sanchez..........filly is on the improve since the trainer claimed her back in late January

race 3    above average clarity

4  Victory Element   not too often you see a Baffert 1st time starter go off at 15 to 1 and run so well....believe this colt surprised Baffert and company work since and back in 13 days........good pedigree for a route.......all systems go for a move forward

5  Draft Pick   wide off pace trips (mostly because of a deep track and often a dull inside) have done well in dirt routes at SA for weeks (what's with that maintenance crew) and that seems likely to be the trip for this colt.......trainer is starting to heat things up including a couple of wins yesterday

1  Aurora d'Oro   should be loose here but we likely will need a different surface than we have seen for this fellow to go all the way as only (approximately) 1 in the last 20 front-runners in routes have gone all the way.......still O'Neill is hot as is Gutierrrez and this fellow was bet hard in his MSW debut

2  Blaze of Glory

race 4    average clarity

6  Alsatian   Drysdale is often at his best 3rd out following a layoff which is the case here for this four-year old colt........that and he might have won his latest if it wasn't for a rare bad trip on the grass by Nakatani

4  Six Point Rack   Mike Puype seems to have a better handle on this gelding these days.......good post and a good grass rider in Drayden Van Dyke......hard not to like

8  Calvert Street   very dangerous speed and Maldonado has options as this five-year old has won on or off of the front end of things.........that and he might be ready for a top effort racing 2nd out following a long layoff

7  Lymebyrd

3  California Journey

race 5    average clarity

1  Kanthaka   2 for 2 at the somewhat specialized distance of 7F........and both were run at Santa Anita with the 2nd one a 3 1/4 length win in a Grade 2 and with today's rider Flavien Prat in the saddle

4  Zulfikhar   on the improve with every start and sure acts as if the 7F distance will be to his liking......rider Garcia is finally showing signs of life and has a shot of impressiving his "meal ticket' Bob Baffert in this spot

3  McKale   rated too low if speed does better than it has of late......seems extremely sharp as he drilled one fast 58:1 five furlong work just 5 days ago......that and Baffert/Van Dyke are 9 for their last 19 as a team

5  King Cause

race 6    average clarity

6  Lucky Byran   impressive return (and that is somewhat hidden) to the race wars following an extended hiatus from the game.........and his work regiment since the 29 March race suggests he should show even more this afternoon

4  Conquest Typhoon   beat our top selection in his latest and sure appears to appreciate the one mile turf distance the most.......sure seems to be a major player in this race and likely will beat our top choice if  Lucky Byran fails to make the forward move that I think he will

1  Deal With It Dude   on the improve and now tries the grass for this 1st time with a decent pedigree for it.......that and McCarthy is often at his most dangerous 3rd out following a layoff which is the case here.......but on the other hand he is 0 for his last 20 1st time running a given horse on the sod

7  Bold Papa

8  Ya Gotta Wanna

race 7    below average clarity

6  Awesome E K   tepid top choice seems at his best racing at 5 1/2 or 6 furlongs..........hope that Ocampo (I've seen the jock ride quite a bit) will take back some as he often does with a runner that has some versatility........if he does this Papaprodromou gelding should finish well

2  Escudo Nacional   fabulous work tab especially endurance wise for this five-year old who hasn't shown a thing outside of some early speed  in 4 lifetime starts.......seems too good to be true but he should be quite the price

8  Downside Up   rather consistent these days but his record is starting to get rather glaring as in zero wins but 6 2nd's and 4 3rd's......can you spell - h  a  n  g  er.......but he did pop a lifetime best in his latest and didn't appear to hang too much

7  Trojan Time

9  Lion Command

race 8    average clarity

2  Moonshine Memories   filly has won 2 Grade 1 races including one at 7F and one at SA so if she is ready fresh off of the bench a 75K Stakes race should be a piece of cake......good young trainer Callaghan has been in go mode of late and he and Prat have won 4 of their last 6 as a team with one other in the money

8  True Royalty   decent layoff win in latest and one strong best of 76 5F work since.......likely moving forward today.........Van Dyke knows well as he has been up for all 3 lifetime races with 2 wins and a 2nd

1  Show It N Moe It   consistent Cal-bred reunites with Bejarano who is 2 for 2 on the Sherlock filly winning by 3 3/4 and 8 lengths.......hard not to like

4  Emboldened

6  Uppercut

race 9    above average clarity

5  What's Bruin  very big dirt effort in her 2nd lifetime start racing 3 wide close to a solid pace.....did well to snatch 2nd.........and she appears to be much better bred for the turf (mom has tossed 5 grass winners)......such a deal

9  Token Vow   wide trip in the 22 April version of this race or might have graduated at first asking........repeat of the effort with a reasonably clean trip and she should be tough

12  Unchaining Melody   three-year old filly has done little wrong in two lifetime starts one in GB and one at SA but of course has yet to win........graduation day might be at hand as she gets to run for the 1st time off of relatively short rest......not out of the win picture in this 12 horse affair by any means

4  Don't Blame Judy

6  Baladera
