Del Mar for Saturday 4 August 2018

So so card this afternoon. Let's call it a 5 on the 1 to 10 scale of things. Sunday's card appears better.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

8  Fortnite Dance   bug boy was a perfect 3 for 3 yesterday and 2 of those wins were riding for Peter Miller..........he rides this 2nd timer for Miller who drops from MC150K to MC80K following a strong 4th place finish.....and why not as he only went for 40K at sale in April

2  Its Gonna Hurt   exits the same MC150K race as our top choice as the favorite in the the race he had little chance to hold together as he set a fast quarter-mile on a dull inside and predictably tired.......Koriner is an eye-popping 39% win with "beaten favorites"....same post and jock as his debut.....let's hope the same early speed

9  Tanker   decent drills since arriving fro Florida for her 2nd lifetime start and 1st with Cerin as the trainer......GP debut was better than it appears in print......dangerous sort unless of course they Tanker

3  Drill Down Dude

1  Night Ops

race 2    average clarity

7  Downside Up   much better since the blinkers were added 7 races back.....really responeded to 1st time Figueroa in her last running a fast 109:3 at Lrc for the MC20K.........that and the cut back in distance of 1/2 furlong appears to be a plus

5  Surfside Sunset   claimed 10 weeks ago and drops a couple of levels.....obviously not exactly what the connections were hoping for........fits a ton if she is OK physically.......we shall find that out about 2:30 pacific time

1  Closing Time   drop makes sense and Puype is strong with the sprint-route-sprint maneuver which is the case here.....T C Baze knows this gelding well having been aboard for most of her 14 career races

6  Night At the Opera

race 3    average clarity

5  Conquest Typhoon   Carava won yesterday's nightcap as our 2nd pick and he needed that win .......he has been showing some signs of snapping out of the doldrums so maybe he can get another win with this six-year-old who fits the 40K level well and appears quite sharp in the a.m......Baze is up and he rode Carava's winner yesterday

7  Play Hard to Get   seems best at today's 9F turf distance and he also seems best on the Del Mar turf........hasn't earned much since his win exactly 5 months ago.....drop makes sense......not my favorite rider but he is having a decent Del Mar meeting and might get off of my "oh no look who is up" list

3  Dano's Dream   Tim McCanna has come "ready to play" at Dmr and he has this five-year old spotted well at a distance that suites him well and might not for many in this field

1  Any Questions

4  Temple Keys

race 4    average clarity

5  Our Silver Oak   won in stellar time (and 2nd place came back to win by 5L at Dmr) despite going off at 33 to 1 at Lrc.......that hints he might not have been all that cranked up....if that is so there is upside in him today....and even if he just repeats his last he should be formidable

2  Lucky's Royal Flush   2 wins and a 2nd by only a head since the blinkers were added.......and his last race was a win in a 100K state-bred Stakes race like we have here....hard not to like

4  Tap the Wire   21 to 1 shocker winning his MSW debut in early May by almost since but his a.m. prowess in impressive.....and he gets one significant rider upgrade.....big day for trainer Dunham as he seldom has a shot in a Stakes race or even enters in one for that matter

1  Oliver

race 5    average clarity

5  Tandalicious   bet very hard in her debut two races back and she ran very well only to be compromised by a very bad trip......her adjusted for trouble Santucci fig was 2L better than par for the MSW so race on the grass in her 2nd start.......solid a.m. work in preparation for her 3rd start and a switch in jocks.....and Baze and D'Amato are 4 for their last 7 with 2 others hitting the board

3  Royal Decendent   solid MSW debut way back on the 1st of June.....hasn't missed a beat in the a.m. since.......Koriner is stellar with 2nd time starters and not that hot with 1sters.....seems quite dangerous

7  What's Bruin   very strong race 2 back at SA at today's distance off of 53 days rest........84 days rest for today and for a trainer in Glatt who gets fresh sprinters ready to perform at a high level quite often

6  Madaket Sunset

race 6    below average clarity

6  Oiseau de Guerre   strong sprint turf race down the hill at SA racing off of two months rest last October .....two months off today and a with a stellar work tab and for trainer who is very reliable when he shows strong works.......should be flying late

7  My Heart Awakens   Emd invader is working on the Del Mar lawn like he loves the sod........rider and the trainer could use a win......hope this is their awakening as this gelding will be one lofty price

2  What'sontheagenda   good spot for the blinkers going back on because there isn't much speed signed up for a 5F turf race and this gelding has plenty of it

5  Little Juanito

8  Catfish Hunter

race 7    below average clarity

12 AE  Babael   very capable trainer Ron Ellis has a dismal record with 1st time starters (likely by design) but this colt has worked extremely well for his debut since stepping on the Del Mar surface.......and the only time he has legged up Evin Roman over the last 3 months it led to a win

6  Sigalert   another 1st timer who appears ready at 1st asking......very expensive ($420K in March) for NY bred.......good rider/trainer combo in Van Dyke & Sadler

8  Neptune's Storm   just bought in April for Morey and company who likely got a good look at what they were getting......a.m. work is up to snuff.......another 1ster who appears ready to rock and roll

3  Dark Prince

7  Easy Shot

race 8    average clarity

6  Storm the Hill   vastly improved in latest 1st time with D'Amato as the trainer........broke the 134 flat barrier despite losing about 3 lengths to trip........4 reassuring drills since 3 of which were on the Dmr turf.......Raffy wisely sticks around........hard not to like the "now" horse

11  Cambodia   best credentials in the race which includes a win in the 2017 version of this Grade 2........would have been top choice with a better post but as good as Van Dyke has been riding the post might not matter too much

2  Sassy Little Lila   with the scratch of the 10 horse this mare now appears to be the controlling speed in this affair......that and today's 1 1/16 turf distance might fit her best

9  Ancient Secret

7  Madame Stripes

race 9    below average clarity

12  Make It a Triple   very consistent dirt sprinter......(7 3 3 1) in his last 7 starts......good history starting from outside posts albeit not as far outside as today's post.....good history racing at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar.......should good off at one big price

9  Flagstaff   nice forward move to graduate in his 2nd lifetime strt.......solid a.m. work since........another forward move appears to be the cards.....should be a major factor in the outcome of this race if that occurs

5  All Out Blitz   tailed off last winter/spring but sure appears cured of what ailed him as he is training for Simon Callaghan like he is more than ready for his return to the race wars

3  Grade One

7  Shades of victory

race 10    average clarity

5  Dignitaire   best early speed by far if he can duplicate his latest.......and Baze likely will do a better job of rationing his speed....if he does he has a good shot at wiring this field

2  Zipman   fits today's level very well but shows many signs of being a hanger........ultra consistent rider/trainer combo in Van Dyke & Baffert the last two months as in 8 for 8 in the money with 3 wins

6  Spirit Mission   if you can't break your MSW at Mth odds are that you won't at Del Hess wisely drops his new shooter in an MC62,500 for today.......1st on the sod this afternoon but bred very well to handle it

8  Irish Spring

4  Aussie Fox

13 AE  Data Central

7  Katie's Cowboy
