Santa Anita for Thursday 4 October 2018

Great to be back following a couple of weeks hiking and biking all over Colorado. I might be getting old but I do my best to stay fit both in body and mind.

The race track seemed very fair for the 1st week of fall racing at Santa Anita. Today's card appears to be an average one handicapping wise.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

(if the race is moved to the main track: 2-1-5-8-7)

6  Believe Indeed   in the exacta 50% of the time in 28 grass races.......last appeared to be nothing more than a spin around the track in a protected race to put some doubt into the minds of those contemplating a claim.......Desormeaux has been chilly the last couple of months but seems due to get his act together

7  Sekhmet's   likely needed her last and the improved a.m. work since her 30 August race supports the notion......last time she dropped significantly like today she won

4  Subic Bay   last couple of racing endeavors are better than appear in print.......that and Mullins uses his top go to guy in T C Baze who gets the call for the 1st time making for a turf rider upgrade

8  Beautiful Becca

2  Award It

race 2    above average clarity

5  Pleasant d'Oro   fell off in his latest which wouldn't do the trick here.............but race 2 back would........and the strength of the effort is disguised by a wide trip up on the pace........recent a.m. work hints we will see his effort 2 back

1  Pitino   nice turf tightener in his 2nd lifetime start run off of a 9 1/2 month layoff.......debut on the dirt was solid and hidden by a fast time and a very bad trip.......1st at a route and his pedigree an screams "long"

4  Justin's Quest   route-sprint-route scenario for 3rd lifetime start is often a good thing for a Baltas trainee......and........seemingly owns the best early gas in the field and that can make him quite dangerous if he gets loose on the lead

race 3    average clarity

3  Mucho Unusual   very solid MSW two-year old debut for this filly.......3 reassuring works put in since her 29 August debut.......Prat stays put.....should be a major factor in the outcome of this race

5  Apache Princess   trainer has been much more formidable with his MSW 1st starters the last 3 months or so and Keith Desormeaux appears to have this filly training as if she's ready to compete at a high level in her 1st lifetime start

6  Gotta Be Lucky   one of three lifetime races fits well in this spot.......trainer is not would she used to be but she does shows signs of getting her act together.......filly has a shot but she is easy to make as our 3rd selection

2  Blueberry Princess

race 4    above average clarity

7  Belle Monte   last race fits fine at today's lower level and her race 2 back would crush this lowly bunch......that and Mr. Peter Miller is hardly ever afraid to lose a given horse.......so....... the drop is much more dangerous than any other S Cal trainer that I can think of

2  K P's Smoken   only lifetime dirt race is a strong number here albeit at a route.......that race was run turf sprint to dirt route......today's race is turf route to dirt sprint.......good enough

1  Married by Now   drop makes sense as this Chew runner has been getting beat double digits vs. better.......not impossible but easy to make as our third pick-a-rue

6  Jabber Now

9  Complete Discrete

race 5    below average clarity

12  Thanks   obvious turf route endurance building gimme with the blinkers taken off to drop and........ go go go....... back where she showed she can run some.....as in a dirt sprint with the blinkers back on

6  Portal Creek   only one in four lifetime endeavors looks good in this spot but she appears to be much sharper in the a.m. hinting Ryan Hanson has tweaked something for the better.......should be a nice price

8  Divine Dharma   another taking a big drop following a better than it looks race in a $50K Stakes affair at Emd.......decent trainer and rider combo in Sadler/Baze

9  Frisky Fox

5  Princess Becky

race 6    below average clarity

2  Shivermetimbers   last two wins for this colt were the last two times today's rider Mike Smith was up......that and the preparatory work series for this Hollendorfer colt is vastly better than he has shown in the past.......only mount on the card for Smith who is (6 4 1 0) to start the meet

6  Ike Walker   very consistent six-year-old gelding who might be at his very best at today's 8 1/2 furlongs.......apprentice has struggled some lately but on the other hand he does awfully well in route races

1  Gato Del Oro   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  one for one in the win column racing sprint to route.......that is the scenario today for this Baltas colt racing 2nd out following a layoff

7  Pepe Tono

race 7   average clarity (AE 10 East Rand has a shot if draws into the field)

(if the race is moved to the main track: 4-5-6-3)

7  Souter   consistent sort has steadily improved for Glatt in 2018 and his gelding is working as if he can show even more this afternoon.......and his adjusted for trip Santucci fig earned in his latest is about 2 or 3 lengths better than par for today's level

6  Goodwillambassador   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  only turf route of his career fits fine as he was pushed out very wide on the 1st turn.....did quite well to be only 3 3/4L behind the winner at the wire

5  Worthy Turk   like our top selection this Miller three-year old is improving and his last is better than appears in print earning an adjusted Santucci fig that is 2L better than par for the Alw 50,000s level

8  Starting Bkoc

4  Rinse and Repeat

race 8    average clarity

8  Bartlett Hall   fell off in his latest in an effort that won't do the trick here........race 2 back can get the job done and the effort is disguised by a wide trip up on the pace.......recent a.m. work hints we will see that race today

3  Victor's Show   should sit in a nice position on or near the lead from the get go........last fits fine but he must deal with another furlong today.........pedigree suggests he should handle it

6  Thefourfortyfourth   neither lifetime race is very strong......but.......his recent a.m. preparation is.........if he runs to his works he might be the one to beat

11  For the Hustle

1  Smokin B

2  Powerful Thirst
