Santa Anita for Thursday 31 January 2019

Plenty of snow followed by all-time record setting cold in Chicago and plenty of rain in the Arcadia forecast make me want to SCREAM at the moment. But what has really been difficult is that the internet and phone has been down quite a bit. I am getting reports posted this week as soon as I can so you can get access. We don't want to run into anything like what occurred last Sunday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1   average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf: 3-2-8-4-1)

3  Bellerin   both lifetime races on the SA turf when rated firm fit solidly here and the last run 3 back was with a low percentage rider and that is not the case today

2  Falcone   trainer is as hot as I can recall since switching to the S Cal circuit......and his colt is quite consistent......that and his jockey brother who remains up today is starting to get his mojo back following a small slump

7  East Rand   might be best on the SA turf and he fired a par like effort in his latest.........two nice 5F drills since his New Years day race......mostly rated 3rd because he might not be able to get up in time from far back with the rails out 30 feet

8  Hot American

1  Ice Kat

race 2   average clarity

1  Platinum Equity   (4 2 1 0) at today's one mile dirt distance and he ran a very strong race in his latest running very wide and still managing to score.......very solid reassuring 4F drill since........8 post in last and 1 post today........should be tough at today's higher level if he gets a better trip with his better starting position

6  Spa Shackalacka   not crazy about his route pedigree but the D'A is solid 1st time route and he might be able to get a loose lead which is so often a winning proposition the 1st time a sprinter attempts at route

3  Odyssey Explorer   not much in his last but do note that he was dead on the board......and since the 30 December race his a.m. work is better and that is somewhat subtle.......seems up for a rebound of sorts and at a distance he appreciates

race 3   below average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf: 4-5-7-1)

2  Dimkar   grass might have some give to it making this French-bred 2nd time starter dangerous.......last basically appeared to be a gimme of sorts........and the fact that Prat lands here adds credence to the idea that this guy is meant and ready

4  Impeachableoffense   1st time Lasix and blinkers go back on today after racing without them in his a.m. work hints he is ready and he has a touch of early speed and that is somewhat hidden

1  Bug Buzz   gets the "Full Monty" here.......rider upgrade - 1st time gelding - blinkers on........and the works are improved........dangerous sort

5  Raging Tiger

race 4   average clarity

5  Microrithms   easy to toss out his latest........dueled in a nasty pace on an inside that was a little dull.......predictably faded.......very strong 3 work series since.......significant rider upgrade to Mike Smith.......should be tough and hopefully at a bit of a price

3  Distinctive B   scratched out of a Stakes race to run here......and he is (16 6 5 1) at today's 6F distance......and he is versatile as he can be very competitive with or without the lead

6  Captain Scotty   Miller trains our 2nd choice and this fellow as well.......five-year old is 2 for 3 at the distance and (4 1 3 0) when Prat is up......and he might have plenty of staying power today coming off 3 straight races at longer distances

race 5   average clarity

9  Perfect Ice Storm   two of Peter Eurton's strong stats are MSW to MC and blinkers off.......both are the case today......only time that Eurton and Maldonado teamed up over the last 2 months they won

4  Choi   another taking that magical drop from MSW to maiden claiming.......and maybe that is where she was headed all along as she went off at 28 to 1 & 38 to 1 in her two lifetime starts

2  Discrete Stevie B   needs her race 3 back and there is some insight into her ability to provide it today as she gets a major rider a jock who teamed up with the trainer for a strong winner to other day

8  Tick Tock

10  Tizbuds Princess

race 6   average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf:  1-5-2-9-4)

6  Starting Block   five-year old grass horse sure appreciates the 10F and 11F marathon distances.......that and the trainer has been terrific since the second half of 2018 especially with his turf stock

9  Fight On   popped his lifetime best in latest and if he can run as strong an effort at the longest race of his life he should be a major factor in the outcome of this race......1st time Prat and he and Dougy O have combined for 5 wins in their last 7 starts and with the other 2 in the $.......yikes

1  Acker   Bejarano might have taken this Miller gelding over our top choice as he has won 3 in a row on him.......even if he didn't this Miller runner might still be dangerous despite racing at a distance that he has flattened out late some in the past as he is very sharp right now

2  You Gotta Wanna

3  Maestro Dearte

race 7   average clarity

3  Gray Magician   great the awakening with the switch to the Miller barn in this fellows last two races (what's new).........both efforts are better than par and were run at today's seven panels.....hard not to like

7  Extra Hope   lifetime best was run 3 back and is much better than par for today's nw alw level.......if he rebounds to that effort he has as good a chance as anyone to take down this race

2  Palladium   likely needs his best ever but about 1/3 of O'Neill's starters have done just that........and bug boy Figueroa 35% of his last 17 mounts for the trainer over the last two months

6  Kingly

race 8   below average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf:  7-4-3-10-12AE-6)

7  Preaching Trainer    low percentage rider on the turf and a low percentage trainer with 1st time starters.........but they have been a decent combo of late......but more importantly this Gaines MSW debut runner is training as if he has plenty of ability......and mom has tossed three winners from three starters two of which were turf winners

4  Loud Mouth   showed stout early gas in latest breaking poorly and rushing into a strong set of if he breaks cleanly and handles his 1st to date on the sod he might go gate to wire at a handsome price

10  Play Money   like our top selection this colt is training as if he is "meant and ready" in his MSW debut.......and Hofmans is 8 for his last 41 with 1st time starters and has started off the SA meeting with a bang with 2 wins and three 2nd's from seven starters

6  Nice Haircut

3  Brix
