Santa Anita for Friday 12 April 2019

Our special publication for Saturday 13 April 2019 covering the 7 Stakes races at Oaklawn Park and Keeneland can still be purchased. Click on the Kee/OP banner on our homepage. It should be in your email sometime this afternoon.

Today's card and Saturday's card both seem decent.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  New Year New Me   decent MC debut (and a key race with 1st and 3rd returning to win) at the difficult distance for a 1st time starter of seven furlongs.......cut back of a full furlong today should give this filly plenty of endurance in the late stages of this 6F affair

6  Appolina  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE drop makes sense for this Baffert 2nd time starter dropping from MC50K to MC30K as she blew an easy paced lead at 5F in her debut in a race taken off the turf and moved to the dirt........and with no races on the hill right now and only few carded at 5F on the turf she needs this softer dirt level to last 6F and win

4  Tick Tock   Andrew Lerner takes over the training duties of this three-year old today from Bill Morey..........wide trip in latest hides an effort in her latest which when you adjust for her trip fits fine here.......and the cut back in distance today should aid her finish

5  Miss Omnipotent

2  Gadot

race 2    average clarity

1  Curly's Music   4 of 5 lifetime starts fit well in this spot......and......his last race sure is disguised by pressing a hot pace 3 wide on the turn in a 7F affair.......he ran an adjusted for pace and position fig that is 4 or 5 lengths better than par for today's level

2  Buck Duane  last two racing endeavors fit and his latest race is better than it appears as he ran wide on a rail bias day........back in short rest but he has handled it in the past more than 1/2 of the time

5  Cayate  tough call if this 5-year-old is ready of the 2 1/2 month break......but......if he is he likely will be dangerous as the best speed in the field

race 3    average clarity

3  Silken Spy   race lacks speed and this filly sure appears to have the most.......so.........with the rail out 30 feet today she might be tough to wheel in if she breaks cleanly and gets away early

4  Wind Tartare   exits a very key race with no less than 6 next out winners (race 3 back was also a very key race)......and her rack 2 back might be even better than those 2 key races and also stronger than it appears in print

5  Whirling   stepped up in last 1st out after the George Papaprodromou claim and ran a nice 2nd in a race down the hill........and his filly might be every bit as good in a route turf race especially at the one mile distance

race 4    average clarity

4  Liberty Park  trainer is waking up from the doldrums and he drops this gelding multiple levels and with the support of 6 tightly spaced drills.......which suggests he is doing well despite the significant suspicious large drop

5  Smokin B   Jack Carava's four-year old is capable on or off of the lead and he just worked an improved 5F drill.......appears to be ready for a top effort

3  Gryffinder   four-year old gelding seems at his best in route races on conventional dirt surfaces......race 3 back which was the last time he saw a conventional dirt surface (and at SA) fits OK here.......not impossible to get to the circle of joy and at a price

7  Rolls Royce Deal

9  Implicitly

race 5    average clarity

4  Honeyfromthesouth  lifetime best was the only time in 4 races that this filly got to race off of short rest.......short rest today and her last race is solid and somewhat hidden in it's strength........and it is rather impressive that she was able to put in a work since her 30th of March race........hard not to like

5  Into Chocolate   Clifford Sise 1st time starter is training as if she is 100% ready to compete at a very high level for her MSW debut......rather sure she will make a good account of herself this afternoon

9  Mind for Mischief   solid move forward in her last her 2nd lifetime start.......1st time using Lasix today and with 3 reassuring works since her latest which was run on the 2nd of March.......last might do the trick and yet she might manage to move forward again

8  Royally Bland

11  Carressa

race 6    average clarity

5  North County Guy  very solid 1st ever at a turf route in his latest and the strength of the effort is disguised by breaking slightly tardy and then racing very wide.......that and the works since the 18 Feb race are vastly improved.........might be sitting on his lifetime best

7  Acclimate   last 4 one mile grass races fit well at today's level........and the only time that today's rider Tiago Pereira was a part of those four races he won firing his best to date........dangerous sort

1  Jimmy Chila   exits a key race where he ran 2nd in a race down the hill.........and his last win came running turf sprint down the hill to route turf........hmmmm

6  Little No Way

9  Bellerin

race 7   below  average clarity

1  Wandering Patrol  seems like a great spot for a "returnee" with some ability as this appears to be a soft group of Cal-bred nw's..........filly has been away since May but she is working like she is fit and ready........one concern is that Ben Cecil is dismal with layoffs of 3 months or greater

2  Chasin Lucas  poor effort with the blinkers on in her latest.......wisely they are taken off today........needs her race two back and if she provides it she has as good a chance of taking down this race as anyone in the field

4  Pied N True  claimed back by Matt Chew despite running a weak race on the day he lost this filly.......that tells me he firmly believes she is capable of much better despite the poor effort........works since the claim back are improved.........dangerous sort and likely at a handsome price

3  Empress of Lov

race 8    average clarity

3  Scattering Pink   route-sprint-route scenario for this Richard Mandella filly trying the sod for the first time........bred well for it........solid a.m. work.........trainer has been firing on all cylinders in 2019.......hard not to like

1  Playa Chica   Richard Baltas has an impressive record with east coast invaders that he takes over the training duties for........filly finished up 2018 with 3 improved grass races after adding blinkers........been away since October but she has put in more than enough morning work to be ready

5  Over Emphasize    1st time on the grass today and also 1st time at a route........pedigree is good enough to handle both........that and she has some speed and more than the 4 horses inside of her so the one or two path on turn one seems likely setting her up for a good trip

7  Magical Gray

2  Haughty Girl
