Santa Anita for Sunday 5 May 2019

OK card to finish off the week of racing. Be back with you next Friday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Preaching Trainer   won his 3rd lifetime start to graduate with the blinkers taken off despite racing somewhat on a solid pace......should have good position here sitting 1st or 2nd down the back stretch

7  Foster Boi  colt has done little wrong in two lifetime starts including a win on the SA in his MSW debut......1st at a route seems to be the ? mark but he retains Prat to help him stay the distance

3  Unbridled Ethos   impressive layoff win in his 2nd lifetime start in a race down the hill.......good pedigree to handle a turf route........seems like the most likely to snatch the lead

4  Continental Divide

race 2    below average clarity

1  Street Image   talk about the "full Monty".......1st time Peter Miller as the trainer.......1st time gelding.........1st time light......working well........equals top pick-a-rue

2  Conquest Smartee   likes to hang but might not here as he is a late runner in a field that should yield a fast set of fractions.....bug boy Velez is 22% win in sprints

3  Spanish Bay   away since Feb 14th but Mandella has him training as if he is fit and ready to roll......strong race in his last (albeit on an off track) disguised be setting a fast pace on a dull inside

race 3    average clarity

1  Synthesis   just popped his lifetime best 1st time running for Papaprodromou.......only beaten by 10L in the SA Derby.......blinkers on today for his 1st on the grass........OK pedigree for the his chances if he does handle the change in surfaces

5  Gregorian   colt won his debut on the AW like a good thing overseas in Ireland back in December and has been off since.......beat 12 foes and 2nd can back to has tossed 2 grass winners so he likely will handle the sod......1st time Lasix........should be tough if D'Amato has him ready off the layoff

2  Tikkum   on the improve so he deservedly is stepped up in class today........might have considered higher if Prat didn't elect to ride our 2nd selection......look for Maldonado to send

race 4    average clarity

1  Derby Storm   significant move forward 1st time racing at a route in last.......and the strength of the effort is hidden.......way too wide up on the pace.....adjusted number is 4 1/2 lengths better than par for today's level..........8 post in last - 1 post today......likely to get a much better trip

5  Friday's At Shady  sprint-sprint-route maneuver and drops down some......rider is dynamite in routes to the tune of 30% win with his last 30 and does well when teaming up with Bonde

2  Jonathantoquick   strong race two back......not much in layoff run in his last........trainer is much more dangerous "back quick" with a horse........16 days off for this fellow today

race 5    average clarity

1  Indoctrination   bad trip in his last kept this gelding from graduating.......all of his lifetime racing endeavors fit well in this spot.......Prat will be out to make amends

3  Ocean Fury  another whose whole career fits at today's lower level........only cost $75K at sale so why not drop to $50K maiden team are starting to heat things up

7  Aussie Fox   five-year old has plenty of run/energy but usually has a boat load of trouble in his races.......if he figures things out today and holds form he has the potential to crush the field

2  Refractometer

5  Boru

race 6    average clarity

2  Arcaro   Baffert 1st time starter is working as if he is 100% ready to roll in his debut......and I like that it is in a 6 1/2 furlong race as he trains and has a pedigree that screams the longer the sprint the better

5  Beleth   decent MSW debut and gets Lasix for the 1st time today.......doubt his last will do the trick but with Lasix and a race under his belt he has the potential to move forward today

1  Sly   good MSW debut on the AW at GG.......solid in the morning since.....draws Mike Smith who has won 9 of his last 16 sprint races and is 2 for 4 over the last 60 days riding for Mandella......not too shabby of stats

race 7    average clarity

3  Achira   hot rider and hot trainer team up here with this laid up mare who does her best running at SA on the grass.......Shirreffs often gives his laid up grass runners a race but this gal has run well for him fresh off of the bench in the past a couple of times......and usually with good early speed

6  Meal Ticket  last three turf races run for this Matt Chew five-year old mare fir solidly here.....seems at her best on the SA turf.......should sit close and with a good grass rider at the helm in Van Dyke

7  Flammetta  responds best for Prat (most do) and owns 3 wins in 5 turf races run at SA..........seems the best of those who will be making a late run......dangerous sort

8  Siberian Iris

9  Ippodamia's Girl

race 8    average clarity

3  Tough But Nice  got a gift win in his latest as he got away with a pedestrian pace to wire that field.......might feel great coming off of such a stress free lead and his works since the 7 April race support the notion.......that and he is (4 3 0 1) the last four times he has gotten loose on a lead......seemingly only one speed horse to put away in the five horse

1  Platinum Equity   Knapp puts his new shooter (claimed two back) in a race where he can't be claimed hinting that his new addition to the barn is doing well.....and a recent bullet drill sure supports the idea......3 for 6 on the SA dirt........1 for 14 racing anywhere else

2  Kochess   gelding has seen better days but like our 2nd pick he has been placed in a race where he can't get claimed suggesting he doing well......lookout if this Hollendorfer nine-year old is ready to turn the corner

race 9    average clarity

9  Desmond   seems like a great spot for a 1st time starter like this well-bred Cal has tossed 6 winners from 6 starters including a Stakes winner....and three of the six turned out to be good turf horses........rather sure this colt is ready but can Talamo get the job done from a tough post........we shall see about 5 pm pacific time

2  Hit the Seam   horse likes to hang but he might get the lead here and have nobody to hang on as his only two races with the blinkers on like today led to some solid early fractions

1  Golden Birthday   debut was good but his next start was not.......recent bullet drill screams rebound if of course he takes to the turf and a route.....pedigree for both suggests he should

8  Jetovator

10  Unusually Handsome
