Santa Anita for Sunday 12 May 2019

Happy Mothers Day

(yes we do have some customers that are moms)

Best of luck as always!!

race 1    average clarity

3  Best Two Minutes   like the way this Steve Knapp claimer handled the new deeper SA main track in latest racing endeavor........cuts his claiming price in 1/2 for today and why not with such a sweet purse of $32,000 for at 12,500 claiming race

4  Big Shanty   blinkers on in his latest and he responded nicely with arguably his lifetime best final time and much better early speed........and like our top pick he seems lured into dropping down to the 12.5K level with such a solid purse now offered for the level of claiming.......and since his last race his a.m. work is improved

1  Point Guard  easy to make as our third selection but his chances likely are enhanced if the track has some moisture in it as he is 1 for 1 on an off track and it was his lifetime best

race 2    average clarity

3  Kristi's Copilot   last two races run are very strong for today's claiming level and the one on the grass is disguised by a wide trip with the blinkers off (and a tough post) which he appeared to dislike as he is usually a smooth running individual as he showed in his next start with the blinkers back on........good post today.......trainer is stout 1st following a claim

1  Conquest Sabre Cat   double barrel action as Yakteen also trains our top choice.......six year old gelding has been away for over a year but is training as if he is ready fresh off of the bench.......and Yakteen is very dangerous off of long layoffs and as mentioned above 1st out after a claim which is the case for this fellow as well

8  Bird Is the Word   significant awakening in his last race with the blinkers removed and the strength of the one mile grass race is hidden by a poor start and a somewhat wide trip.......nice work since the 19 April race hints he will move forward 2nd out after the layoff......should be a price

6  Crown the Kitten

race 3    above average clarity

3  Go Big Blue Nation  stands out here with the best a.m. work in the field by far.......and Bonde wins his fair share of this early races for the babies......good rider/trainer team to boot

2  Acai   decent work tab but whereas our top choice is working at Santa Anita this filly is training over at Slr. so the surface change is a ? mark

5  A Thousand Dreams   only four works showing but her last drill for O'Neill (also trains our 2nd selection) seems like her best work and she gets Prat on her back

race 4    above average clarity

2  Dannie Joe   poor pedigree for a route but considering she just ran a very strong 7F on the now deeper SA main track you would think the extra furlong and the two turns wouldn't do her in enough to keep her from being a major factor in the outcome of this starter race......good to see Gryder stay up as he is a perfect 2 for 2 on this filly

1  Scathing   great spot for this mare who has been facing tougher in her last two races.......and even though she hasn't raced in a two turn dirt race for a while her history for one is decent (10 2 3 1)

3  Sturdy One   not too hot racing in route races in her past but she was just claimed by Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and the new purchase appears to be a good one.........and it appears as if she has a decent chance to get loose on the lead and for an underrated jock who is at his best in dirt routes

race 5    below average clarity

(dislike these 5F turf races - can't wait for the down the hill turf races to return)

2  Don't Sell   nice time /effort to break her MSW up north on the AW at GG.......1st on the grass today but her pedigree screams turf sprinter.....that and many horses that handle the AW at GG like the grass.....good rider/trainer/owner trio to boot

6  Moonshine Annie   very consistent when racing in turf sprints.......Van Dyke worked out a decent trip for this mare who flew in the stretch and only lost but nose in the 28 April version of this race.........same post to work with today for Drayden who has four 2nds with four mounts on this mare

8  Shyrock Eddie  four-year old filly has been competitive in all 3 lifetime 5F turf sprints despite failing to get a clean trip in any of them which at the 5F turf distance is so often necessary.......Gryder is riding the grass well......maybe she gets that "clean" trip today

9  Wishful

4  Heaven Squared

race 6    average clarity

3  Mavericks   good work regiment for this Bruce Headley laid up gelding......last work was just 3 days ago and was a bullet 3F drill......hints he is feeling good when it counts the most as in right before his scheduled start.......lifetime best was his maiden debut and the strength of the effort is greatly disguised.........trainer is decent off of long layoffs and his gelding showed he can fire "fresh" as you don't get any fresher than your maiden debut

2  Mr. Classical   sure like the sprint-route-sprint scenario for an O'Neill runner in general but especial so for this fellow that constantly flattens out in two turn races......that and Doug puts the blinkers on his gelding today likely to help his five-year old get in the game early with the cut back in distance to the shortest race of his career

1  Scrambled   drop makes sense especially with the larger purse money......lifetime best and a fit here was his only race on the main track albeit on a sloppy track.......blinkers on and route to sprint......the D'A is shaking things up which is often a good thing

6  Wicked Fen

7  Drink

race 7    average clarity

6  Fiery Lady   3 for 3 on the turf racing at today's 8 furlong distance......and the last time this mare won at one mile it came sprint to route.........that is the case today.......good to see Mike Smith back up (and for his only mount of the day) who won with this gal two races work tab

9  Gypsy Blue   turf surely won't be the problem as this five-year old mare is a perfect 4 for 4 on it.......but this is her 1st around two turns and she isn't exactly bred to run all day long......but then again she gets Prat in the irons to help her hold together when push comes to shove down the stretch

3  Queen Bee to You  Mike Pender has had success in the past using the sprint-route maneuver with this mare and that is what he has set up for her for this one mile Stakes turf race........should go off at a handsome price

1  Cordiality

7  Bella Luma

race 8    average clarity

6  Heloise  there is lone speed angle in a race and then there is the less discussed lone closer in race.......Cerin filly likely will sit last in the early stages and come fast late.......and she sure appears to love the new deeper SA surface

1  Crackling Bread   par like race at 7F in her latest......race two back at 6F is much better than par and was an easy win......6F today

5  Chay Up and Away   significant rider upgrade today especially for a horse with some early speed......mare has done little wrong in her dirt races since the blinkers became part of her arsenal

2  Caracortada

race 9    average clarity

2  Opus Won   so far in her career she has run best "fresh"......race 2 back which is her lone grass run racing off of an extended break is solid for today's level and that is somewhat disguised by a bad trip where she raced against the boys in what turned out to be a key race........and today she gets a much more accomplished rider on her back than she had in that race......such a deal

10  Lucky Lately  filly owns an abundance of early speed so the post isn't too much of a concern......fired her lifetime best in her latest.......runs off of short rest today and the only other time she has run "off of short rest" she moved forward a lot.........if that happens again she will be very tough

1  Virginia Hall   trainer is solid 1st at a route and 2nd time on the grass.........good trainer/owner team.......dangerous sort and possibly at a decent price

4  Goodtingscominpink

3  Unusual Stuff
