Santa Anita for Friday 17 May 2019

Rather disappointed that the condition book still doesn't have any races down the majestic SA hill turf course as the 5F grass races are too often dominated by racing luck as there is so little margin for error in the abbreviated turf distance of only 5F.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Field Bet  brutal trip in lone turf route in a race run two back at SA.....did extremely well to only be beaten by 5 1/4 lengths........2nd out after the O'Neill claim today.........recent bullet preparatory drill........significant rider upgrade to Prat from the bug boy who rode in the aforementioned turf route......such a deal

1  Breezy Bee   earned par or better Santucci figs for today's level of racing in 1/2 of her 8 turf starts.......3 works since her latest run on 14 April........seems deserving of the MC step-up from 50K to rider in Desormeaux up

4  Sunriser   trainer has had one of his best SA meetings in a very long time.......filly finally gets to race off of relatively short rest ......that and in a maiden claiming race for the 1st time in her career

6  Calentita

5  Royally Bred

race 2    average clarity

4  Matriculate   3 for 3 at today's somewhat specialized 7F sprint distance and his latest race which was a 7F win at 16K fits solidly at today's 25K year old gelding ran three wide up on a hot pace and still managed to pull away from the pack to win going away........same effort even with just an OK trip should get the job done here

3  Spokane Eagle   change in trainers today from one hot trainer at GG to an even hotter trainer at SA in Doug O'Neill........gelding has a decent history racing at SA especially on days the track played a little slower albeit not as slow as it is playing bullet preparatory work on the SA tr.t.......dangerous sort

2  Sheer Flattery   goofy looking race in his last and drops two claiming levels today........races 3 back and 5 back look good....... .we might see something similar today from this Knapp (4 wins with 7 starters last week!) five-year old runner

race 3    below average clarity

1  Side Street Dave  solid trio of 3F gate works for this Sherlock 1st time starter.......trainer won with a baby last week from the one post and with today's rider Payeras in the saddle......hmmmm

3  Cal's Gem   following 4 works out-of-town this MSW 1ster stepped on the SA dirt for the 1st time and popped a fast best of seventeen 35:3Hg bullet drill.......small potatoes trainer by he does fairly well with MSW runners

2  Zero Down   good trio in general in O'Neill/Gutierrez/Reddam but at the moment they are red-hot........that and mom has tossed 4 winners from 4 starters including a Stakes winner

9 AE  El Tigre Terrible

7  Shady Empire

8  Pour On the Cole

race 4    average clarity

6  Hansen Tale Blues   3 of her 6 lifetime races fit well in this spot.......highly likely she needed her last as it was her 1st start in over 16 months........seems to respond well with Roman on her back

3  Osteria   Clifford Sise has won with 2 of his last 4 maiden claiming first time starters and he appears to have put enough into this filly to possible make it 3 for his last has tossed one winner from one starter

7  Sweetener   cut back in distance should help this filly as she appears to what no part of running as far as seven furlongs.......Maldonado is up for the first time so you know it will be pedal to metal from the get go

1  Chasing Moments

8  Awesome Amanda

race 5    below average clarity

6  Treasure Treasure   five furlongs of turf to cover seems made to order for this gelding who doesn't want to race very far.......and what a significant rider upgrade for a grass race........and last but not least a 5 lbs weight break for a three-year old in May for a race as short as five furlongs is a steal

4  Prodigal Son  another 3 yr old with an advantageous 5 lbs less to hot trainer......1st on the sod for this youngster but bred well for it.......hard not to like

3  A Salute to Lt Dan   another hot trainer in Lerner and does he ever get the job done 2nd out after a in 5 for his last 8.......1st on the lawn today for this three-year with a so so pedigree for it.......but he appears to hate conventional dirt but loves the AW.......and many a horse with that do tend to handle the turf

1  Morgan S.

8  Psycho Dar

race 6    average clarity

6  Union Rebel  big race turf to dirt in his latest........if he can run similar today dirt to dirt he should make it back to back wins.......trainer is 2 for his last 5 with "claim repeaters".......AaronGryder sticks around

3  Honeymoonz Over   trainer is stout 1st out following a claim and especially so of late........gelding did toss a clunker in his latest but tossed a solid bullet drill since for his new connections........decent chance he rebounds today

8  Market Sentiment   last race was solid and like our 2nd selection he put in a bullet work since.......mostly put as our 3rd selection because he has something to prove racing as far as 6 1/2F & his history with outside posts is poor......still he is not out of the win picture by any means.......pun intended

1  Fast Cotton

4  Bear Charm

race 7    average clarity

5  Velvet Queen  ran 3rd in a key race in her last which was down the hill.......she had a brutal trip in her lone lifetime turf route (2 races back) and earned a strong adjusted fig......3 races back in her debut she won rather easily gate to wire in a race on the SA hill........she has been away since January but her a.m. work suggests she is fit a ready just as she was in her debut

4  Holly Hundy   filly had a perfect trip in her latest and she has a post and running style that seem conducive of getting another one.......that and the jock who gave her such a nice ride stays put

1  Devils Dance  works prior to this gals last hint she would need a since are improved.......filly has shown life in all three of her grass sprint races and she won her lone race at 5F on the turf albeit at Del Mar.......seems dangerous

7  Square Peggy

6  Shes All Women

race 8    average clarity

4  Charlotte Louise  filly ran a Z pattern (up close early then fell way back and then came on strong in the late stages) in her MC debut....believe the race was a bit of a test drive and that the real "Charlotte Louise" will strut her stuff today

8  A Dime for Me   like the switch in trainers for today especially for a runner coming off of a 3 month break.....should be in the mix from the get go........dangerous sort for Mark Glatt and company

1  Wilhelmina's Girl   bad break from the gate in her maiden debut but after the disappointing start she showed plenty of life.......that and she just put in a solid 36:1 drill 4 days ago.......should be a player if she exits the green monster in good order this afternoon

3  Daddy's Real Deal

6  And Counting
