Santa Anita for Sunday 2 June 2019

Belmont Stakes Day is 6 days away on 8 June with 13 races total 10 of which are Stakes races. Eight Grade 1 races and one Grade 2. Our special publication with full race card selections and comments is now available for purchase. Advanced forecast is for good weather all week. Our track record with our special pubs when we know we will get "fast and firm" surfaces is awfully good.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

5  Snappish  checked at the start in his MSW debut (which was the 11 May version of this race) and then showed plenty of life ......very little support at the windows suggests he needed the race and if that is so he should more fit for today's race.......good sign that Desormeaux stays put

2  Deuce   trainer shows signs of snapping out of a prolonged slump and might add to his "comeback" here with this laid up colt who ran a nice MSW debut on the dirt way back in January.........and I like his pedigree to handle the grass.....also the 1 & 2 posts have dominated these abbreviate turf sprints

7  Mo Forza   another trainer in Miller who has been in the doldrums but over a much shorter amount of time......decent preparatory works for his MSW debut.....and.....a decent 4F turf work for a two-year old at Sar last summer........dangerous sort

6  Big Headed Baby

1  Camby

race 2    below average clarity

2  Mickelson  good drills for this Keith Desormeaux MSW 1st time starter.......and the one that really catches my eye is his last work which was out of the gate and 1/2 furlong than today's distance.......should have very good endurance in the late stages of this brother team the last two months in Kent & Keith

3  D K's Crown  very solid a.m. work for this Luis Mendez 1st time starter with plenty of speed put into him.......and you know Maldonado will put the pedal to the metal from the get go and then try to hold off all challengers

7  Preacher  another 1st timer who shows signs that he can fly early......Hollendofer won yesterday with a 1st time starter (our top pick) with Smith up.......Van Dyke is up here and Smith and Van Dyke have the same agent......hmmm

5  Raging Whiskey   likely rated too low if breaks much better than he did in his debut

race 3    average clarity

5  War Chest   bad trip in latest and actually ran a fig that is slightly better than par for today's level.....and.......the race was also at nine furlongs......see ya Pereira.....hello that switch.....should get a nice stalk position

4  Accountability   seems to have better early speed with the long turf run-up at the distance of 9F on the grass at SA.......and he gets 1st time Maldonado enhancing his chances of being in one of the 1st 3 positions by the back stretch........that and he drops multiple levels......dangerous sort if his good health has remained intact

3  Incredible Luck   subtle rider upgrade and better recent a.m. work......good race 2 back.......9F might hurt some but still seems dangerous in this spot

race 4    average clarity

5  Phantom Boss   exits the fastest 2019 Santa Anita two-year old race to date where he only lost by a neck........and.........he closed well late despite a bit of a wide trip.......should be very tough if he holds form

3  Spectacular Point   decent works for this Doug O'Neill 1st time starter and the connections were able to get the meets leading rider to accept the mount.........dangerous 1st timer but he may need our top choice to have a bad day to win

2  Fly the Sky   Miyadi 1st time starter finished off his a.m. preparation with back to back to back gate works that were but in off of very short intervals of 5 and 6 days.......might be wound up and ready to unwind today

6  Too Late

race 5    average clarity

2  Gregorian Chant  very impressive in both lifetime starts which were wins but he best not run as green as he did in his latest......don't think he will with the blinkers put on to help his focus........and three nice works since his last on 5 May

6  Neptune's Storm  best early speed in the field and he is capable of running well on or off of the lead......that and he sure improved in his latest which Baltas as his conditioner for the 1st time

4  Parsimony  colt has moved forward both times he ran off of very short rest (13 & 14 days).......he last raced only 8 days ago.........O'Neill puts his maiden in a Stakes race.....likely exited the race in great shape......likely needs his lifetime best but he might be up for it

race 6    average clarity

5  Papa Jazz   both lifetime one mile dirt races are way better than par for today's MSW level........away for over a year but he has put in enough a.m. work to be ready......we shall see about 3:30 pacific time if he is

6  Justin's Quest  double barrel action from Baltas as he also trains our top pick..........four year old tossed a clunker in his latest but gets plenty of time off to recover.......returns as a 1st time gelding and he is training as it the surgery has improved him

2  Midcourt   quite the impressive 1st ever in a route in his last which was on 24 Feb. in a race run off of a 16 month layoff........3+ months since his latest should be a piece of cake for this Shirreffs four-year old

race 7    average clarity

7  Seaside Dancer   3 for 3 since O'Neill claimed and this filly just won the 10 May version of this race.......owns plenty of early speed and yet she is capable of winning without the lead.......Martin Garcia is riding well and especially so on the grass.....hard not to like

3  Persephone beaten by our top choice in her latest but maybe she can turn the tables on her here as she has steadily improved with every race she has run to date.......and Prat sticks with her for a 3rd consecutive race

5  Gorgeous in Grey   trainer change today and a positive one and with some solid a.m. preparation at GG.......that and take note that she only lost to our 2nd choice by a neck at GG when last seen on April 20th.....dangerous sort

9  Suprema

2  Cash for Cass

race 8    average clarity

5  Violette Szabo   on the right end of the learning curve and she seems better suited for a 6F race than a 6 1/2F race and yet she just graduated in a 6 1/2 furlong affair.......3 reassuring works since.....believe her progress continues today......rider/trainer have teamed up to win 3 of their last 6 as a team

4  Hang a Star   nice move forward to graduate in her 2nd lifetime start......filly should get a nice stalk or mid pack position similar to what she had in her last race.......believe our top pick and 3rd pick will duke it out some and she will sit behind them making her quite dangerous

1  Uno Trouble Maker   filly has won 3 in a row by an average just short of 4 lengths......but......the last two times she started from the one post she ran poorly.......still she is dangerous because she appears to be razor-sharp

race 9    below average clarity

9  Bellize   hot trainer in Sadler and even hotter when he legs up Victor Espinoza.......MSW 1st time starter is bred to love the green carpet and she hasn't missed a beat in the a.m. over a prolonged period of time of 4 months

7  Claudelle   double barrel action from Salder as he also trains our top the 7 lbs weight break in these 5F grass races.....that and this filly is capable of competing well on or off of the pace

6  La Shirimp   last might have been nothing more than a tune-up.....if that is the case lookout today as this girl's debut in Ireland is very strong beating 18 of 19 foes at 25 to 1..........jock upgrade and to one in Van Dyke who has won 3 of his last 5 mounts for the D'A

10  Honeyfromthesouth

1  Fabiolla

3  True Mischief
