Santa Anita for Friday 21 June 2019

Decent card to start the final week of racing at Santa Anita and no not the final week ever but until next Fall. 1st race has a SHF carryover of $13,794.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

6  Street Image   trainer doesn't claim that many considering the size of his barn but when he does you best take note........D'Amato just claimed this three-year old who has plenty of early speed which has been a good thing in these abbreviated turf sprints at SA......his only turf race was a route and he was rank and a handful for Talamo who eventually pulled up but WALKED OFF.......my guess he handles the sod this time......lifetime best was with Pedroza who the D'A goes to here.....dangerous speed at a price

4  Mercy Rule  if you can't win a MSW race at GG you best drop into a MC at SA.....that is what Jonathan Wong does here........sharp preparatory drill a week ago at GG..........might really fly early with 7 lbs apprentice Jose Leon on this back......but note Leon hasn't hit the board in nine starts at SA......maybe that changes today

9  Oil Can Knight   1st on the sod but owns an adequate pedigree for it.......tough post but a good turf jock in Cedillo who won his only mount over the last two months riding for O'Neill

8  Seeking Refuge

5  River God

race 2    above average clarity

1  Unchain Her Heart   Brian Koriner is a solid 22 % win with his last 100 MSW 1st time starters.......one of his go to riders is up in Gryder.......two year old filly didn't come cheap at sale........and of course the works in preparation for her debut are very good.......a superfecta of reasons to consider this young filly

6  Vegan   good trip in her MSW debut where she ran 2nd and then a wide trip in her 2nd lifetime endeavor (1st time on Lasix and also 2nd) which somewhat hides a move forward of about 2 lengths......pounded at the windows in both starts and likely will be again today.......jock needs to be a bit more clever and not get caught wide this time around

7  Takes a Village   flashed some solid quarter-mile speed in her MSW debut and it cost her as she tired late as the favorite.......but that effort was at 5F and today she gets to run a 1/16 of a mile less......not an easy post but a good gate jock in Maldonado to utilize her speed and clear most or all by mid turn........not out of the win picture by any means......pun intended

5  Fran's Empire

4  A Royal Ace

race 3    average clarity

4  Jamming Eddy   seems likely to get a good trip especially with top turf jock Flavien Prat up for the 1st time as this three-year old gelding should be able to find the rail or 2 path on the 1st turn with his tactical early speed........he should on or near the front end of things in what should be a doable pace

5  Good Bye Putin  brutal trip in his MSW debut (Diaz in the saddle) and yet he still finished up decently and did quite well to wind up 6th......good trip in his next start (V. Espinoza in the saddle) where he ran 2nd but the effort was far less impressive than his MSW debut.......so........what we need is his effort/energy displayed in his debut combined with the trip he had in his 2nd start.......highly likely to get it with Espinoza remaining up

6  General Mo   latest effort which was his first to date on the lawn and at a route is better than it appears in print......but what really catches my eye is his recent a.m. preparation (1st time with the blinkers on) which is quite aggressive with 3 tightly spaced muscle-building drills

2  Peedie

7  Loaded Joe

race 4    average clarity

4  Feeling Strong   three-year old gelding is at his best in dirt route races and gets to run in one this afternoon following two straight dull races on the turf.......and his morning work for today's 1st race in 8 weeks is solid........rather sure this Hector Palma youngster is feeling strong and sitting on a top effort

1  I Can Do This   very consistent sort racing at today's one mile distance on the dirt (7 1 4 2).....that and all 7 of those races were run at Santa Anita........should get a good trip with top jock Prat staying put........mostly made our 2nd choice as he tends to lack late a punch (will to win) when push comes to shove in the very late stages of a race

5  Oh Man   dangerous route speed for this gelding who gets in light with the 7 lbs. apprentice rider up........it seems that he only has one speed challenger in the 6 horse but unfortunately Maldonado is riding him.......so that diminishes his chances of getting an easy lead.......thus......3rd selection

race 5    average clarity

6  Eskimo Roses   away since 5 August 2018 but like so many speed horses he has a good history of running well fresh off of the bench........that and his lifetime best was run in his latest (off of a 4 month layoff) and it was his lone race competing at today's 5F turf distance........hard not to like as speed has dominated these abbreviated turf sprint races

9  Eric the Trojan  consistent late running turf sprinter is racing 1st following the Sadler claim which was made on the last day of March.......six year old responds well to ample time off between starts and he is training as if he is fully fit and ready to roll.......that and the fact Prat and his agent want the mount supports the notion he is meant and ready today

5  Regal Born  gelding's 5 furlong grass races are decent especially when Tiago Pereira has been up........mid pack runner seems to cover the bases as we have a speed horse on top - a deep closer as our 2nd selection - and a mid pack runner as our 3rd.......such a deal

1  Very Very Stella

3  The Rule of King's

race 6    above average clarity

5  Reedley   earned an adjusted for trip & pace Santucci fig in his MC50K debut that fits in a MSW race very well......works sure hint that he is doing well and if he is he should be very difficult to beat........but........I am a touch leery that he hasn't been stepped up in class some

1  Babael   on the improve with each and every race with few reasons not to believe that his progress can't continue today........son-in-law and his father-in-law (Talamo/Ellis) sure could use a win as over the last two months they are 0 for 10 with only 2 horses hitting the board

6  Call You Tomorrow   blinkers on in his 2nd lifetime start and he sure responded well to the equipment change......that and his trainer Ben Cecil is snapping out of a slump.......3 very reassuring tightly spaced works since his 18 May race......feeling good

race 7    average clarity

3  Proud Pedro  very dangerous if this three-year old manages to hold his form as top turf jock Prat should be able to get the wood on turn one with two individuals inside of him with more early speed.......that and his endurance for today's one mile turf race should be good coming off of a winning 9 furlong affair

1  Contagion  2 for 3 when this three-year old has been able to get a loose lead.......and like our top selection he has the potential of improving as he also competes for the 1st time as a gelding......solid N Cal turf jock in Abel Cedillo

8  Order and Law   race lacks speed and this three-year old might have enough to clear many foes by turn one and by no worse than 2 wide on it........he has shot if that is what jock Aaron Gryder can accomplish

2 Nolde

6  Of Good Report

race 8    average clarity

5  Aced   just ran his best race since his MSW debut 7 races back.......and since the improved effort he has been gelded and with improved a.m. work put in hinting the "ultimate equipment change" has made him better........hard not to like

7  Concur   lifetime best was run route AW to conventional dirt sprint three races back off of 26 days rest.......turf route in last and a dirt sprint today this time with 21 days rest.........that and trainer Ortiz is solid 1st following a claim.......and it is good to see Bejarano ride thru the claim

2  Royal Trump   consistently decent numbers including at today's 6 1/2F distance.......mostly made third choice because he has raced at today's racing level three times and yet to find the winners circle

1  Forestation

4  Bouncing Around

race 9    average clarity

7  Sidepocket Charger  brutal trip in her MSW debut with about a dozen lengths of trip trouble in a one mile turf route like today......significant jock upgrade today.......able to work 4 times since 12 May debut.......trainer statistically speaking is solid 2nd time route and MSW to MC........should be a decent price

2  Lucky Stepper   small move forward in latest in fact it was a par effort for today's MC level.......good post and rider.......hard not to like this Carla Gaines three year old filly

4  Springster   prolonged weekly work tab hints that this race is not a tune-up as is the fact that Baltas starts his young filly in a maiden claiming race........and look who wants the mount........Prat who by far handles the young developing horses the best of the SA jockey colony

6  Laker Jet

3  Charlotte Louise
