Santa Anita for Saturday 22 June 2019

Santa Anita closes tomorrow and so do we until Wednesday July 17th to charge the batteries and be ready for everyone's favorite meeting which is of course the Summer Del Mar meet.

Difficult card to decipher as you can tell be the clarity ratings but Sunday does appear to be a great closing day card for The Great Race Place.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Bobs Blues Man  exits a fast key heat of MSW runners where getting beat by less than 7 lengths sure fits well at today's lower MC50K level........that and this Binkerhoff two-year old went off at 50 to 1 in a  7 horse field hinting the race was only a learning experience.......1st time Lasix today to boot

2  D K's Crown  very eventful MSW debut checking on the back stretch and then getting pushed out badly on the turn.........colt earned an adjusted for all that trouble Santucci fig that fits solidly at today's lower level......that and trainer Mendez is 3 for his last 10 and with 5 others hitting the board with the MSW to MC move

6  Bad Beat   very aggressive work regiment for this Kitchingman MC 1st time starter........very tightly spaced drills which were only 4 or 5 days apart......might but quite muscled up for today's debut run

race 2    below average clarity

5  Zuzanna   five-year old mare is on quite the rebound since Bob Hess claimed 4 races back.......and........I doubt she has slipped any as she remains in a "protected" race as in not up for sale in a claiming race.........cut back in distance for this gal appears to be a plus.......Desormeaux stays put for Hess - usually a very good thing

7  An Eddie Surprise   10 of 11 in the money on the grass and (4 1 2 1) at today's one mile turf distance......add to that and you have a trainer in O'Neill who has been getting the job done almost the entire year........hard not to see this four year old being part of the win picture here

1  Believe Indeed  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  gaudy win percentage for Andrew Lerner as in 34% win for 2019.........and when he takes over a given horse like he does today he is 3 for 6 with a big R.O.I........six-year-old mare has been in the exacta 1/2 of her 36 turf starts.......dangerous sort

2  Trustini

3  Take a Leap

race 3    below average clarity

2  Starr of Quality  stands out here if you can toss his last which was a dismal effort in a Grade 2........last time this mare ran a clunker was back on 1 April 18......next out?......a 7 length win........good rider/trainer combo

1  Bella Luma   latest race on the grass is way better than it appears in print........4 reassuring drills since the 12 May race.........not sure how good this Brian Koriner six-year-old is on conventional dirt but if she handles it today she appears as if she should finish up well in the late stages of this ridiculously small four-horse field

race 4    average clarity

9  Mr. Magico   par like efforts in the 3 May and 26 May versions of this race......rider upgrade especially for a turf race........Pratt has a great shot to get on over from the outer-most 9 post as 2 runners are faster and the rest look slower giving him a slot to get his fanny over by turn one.......like his chances if he gets that accomplished

5  Royal Insider  it seems highly likely that he will get a nice stalk position behind our 3rd & 5th picks......and that makes him quite dangerous considering how hot O'Neill & Bejarano are doing as a team these days

2  Outlaw   dangerous speed if he can get the jump on the 6 horse........lone turf route race is decent.......not impossible to visit the winners circle but quite easy to make as the 3rd pick

1  Holy Ghost

8  Fortune of War

race 5    below average clarity

3  Clem Labine   impressive 2-year-old MSW debut which was on the AW at GG getting forced wide and still managing to finish strong with a 3 length going away at the wire win........ gelding has been away since the November race but he showed he can run "fresh" and his pedigree to handle conventional dirt is good......jock Abel Cedillo has won 2 of his last 3 months for Miyadi over the last couple of months

1  Minoso  endurance should be enhanced coming off of 2 straight turf routes......so........6 1/2 furlongs should be advantageous for this gelding and it won't be for most of his foes in the 6 horse field......shot to be the "last one standing" at the wire

4  Satrapa   both races run last year are good efforts.......his third start run off of a 8 month hiatus is not........but it might have been a tune-up of sorts......if it was he should be in the mix for the right to head to the circle of joy following this race

race 6    below average clarity

3  Prodigal Son   sprint-sprint-route scenario for this O'Neill three year old filly who ran her eyeballs out in her latest to be a 2 1/4L beaten 7th........he had a horrendous trip and yet still was able to put in a strong stretch drive.......should be a price

7  Desmond Doss   D'Amato is one the the best California trainers to get a horse to repeat 1st race after breaking his maiden......that and this colt sure finished up strong hinting the extra furlong to cover will be a plus

1  Our Silver Oak   just fired lifetime best with a switch in trainers to Jonathan Wong.........that GG effort fits well here and he draws the attention of Smith and his agent.......hard not to like

4  Irish Heatwave

8  Mobou

race 7    average clarity

7  Message   not your typical MSW debut for this Baffert filly last September at Del Mar as in a dull debut......away since and she is working as if her return to the race wars will be anything but dull......Martin Garcia gets the call and he sure is making quite the comeback

4  Road Rager   solid move forward in her 2nd lifetime start.......she was disqualified for the win and placed 2nd....... Aaron Gryder will be out to make amends and the works put in since the 4 May debut suggests Aaron has plenty of horse to work with

8  The Nightingale   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  5F turf MSW debut appears be nothing more that a muscle her up race to be at full throttle on a surface and distance that better utilizes her pedigree.....rather sure this youngster is well-meant today

1  Valencia

3  Crystal Lake

race 8    average clarity

1  Ollie's Candy  toss out her latest which was run off of a long layoff as she was shuffled back early in a Grade 1 to last and that was a bad position as the pace up front was easy.......filly just missed (by a neck in both races) in a Grade 1 and Grade 2 last summer......good post and a Grade 3 today........two sharp bullet works since her 27 May race......hard not to like

2  Storm the Hill   5 for 7 on the turf at SA.......0 for 15 on other turf courses.......2 for 2 with Bejarano up in Grade 3 races......away since November but D'Amato likely has her ready as this is her only shot to race at SA on the grass until Fall

7  Gliding By  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  six-year-old mare has not done too well when competing in Stakes races but she is training exceptional well as if Baltas has tweaked something for the better.......should be in the hunt from the get go in what might be a reasonable pace.......should be a handsome price

10  A Little Mo

3  Simply Breathless

race 9    average clarity

7  Cruel Intention   2nd lifetime start was freaky strong racing wide pressing a hot pace and still able to win......that effort earned an adjusted for pace and position Santucci fig that is off the charts......a.m. work hints he his feeling fine for his return to the races off of a significant layoff......wins for fun if he returns where he left off for Baffert and company

1  Candy Cornell   fell off in last as he might have "bounced" some off of such a big wake-up race two back that is tons better than appears in print......if our top pick doesn't fire like I think he will this colt has a shot especially if he rebounds to his run 2 back and gets the ride like he got in his latest

3  Quality Line   away since August but his a.m. work hints he is ready fresh off of the bench.......good numbers and record when racing at today's 6 1/2 panels........so if our top pick doesn't fire like I think he will he should be in the hunt for the top prize

2  Spokane Eagle

6  California Street

race 10    below average clarity

4  Takeo  veered out at the start as so many do drawing the outer-most post and then rushed to the lead.........did quite well to only get beat by 5L........cut back in distance should be a plus........2 for 63 jock on turf jock in Blanc is not........come on Brice we're rooting for you

1  Mo Forcza   good five furlong turf sprint MSW debut.....retains Pratt and his colt has a pedigree that should appreciate the two turns of turf........1st time on Lasix........Miller is starting to break out of a mini-slump.....hard not to like

2  Sly   lacked room in his last which was on 25 May in a 9 furlong grass race or he would have been much closer at the wire.......blinkers on and two nice preparatory drills for today's race........cut back in distance should be a plus especially with the blinkers on to help get him in the game earlier

8  One Nation

3  Victory Element  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE
