Del Mar for Sunday 21 July 2019

OK card today. Be back with you Wednesday for the 2nd week of the Del Mar Summer meeting.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

4  Trapper Peak   gelding has a good history running fresh and he is 3 months "fresh" today.......that and in all likelihood he is also ready because of the ship and win bonus.......four year old needs a significant drop and gets one

5  Soul Owner   last three racing endeavors all fit well here and they were all on different surfaces........so that bodes well for his chances of handling his 1st to date on the Dmr dirt.......would have been top selection if I wasn't concerned about his ability to run as far as 6 1/2 furlongs

3  Captain N. Barron   likes to hang in the stretch but he might not today as 6 1/2F is a good fit and his endurance should be good cutting back in distance 1/2F........and he gets 9 lbs off today......that and it is impressive that he worked 5F just 5 days ago.......trainer Lewis has been ready with the few that he has race at Del Mar so far

race 2    above average clarity

6  Seven Scents   last three sprint races are all solid and disguised in their strength by pace and/or position........away since Jan where he ran one stout 6 1/2F effort down the hill at SA (solid pace racing a bit too wide and still won rather easily).......previously before that he was tons the best despite running 3rd as he raced too wide  thru-out a one mile turf race..........gets in extremely light with the 7 lbs bug boy up and the fact he is the lone three year old in the race.......should be tough if he is fully ready fresh

2  What'sontheagenda   only one way for him to go and that is at full bore early as so far he needs the front end of things to succeed........there is other speed in here so it might come down to how fast he will need to go for the 1st quarter to stay in the mix throughout

4  Blackout   six year returns to S Cal following 3 races (2 of them better than they appear in print) in Kentucky.........5F might be a little too short for this Miller turf sprinter but his history when Prat rides is solid and this race seemingly has about a 50/50 chance of playing into the hands of his off pace style

3  Tina's Exchange

race 3    below average clarity

4  Adulting   three year old filly who ran 2nd in her debut owns decent early speed and now gets Maldonado who usually moves up runners with some early speed.......also the filly that was 1 1/2L ahead of her at the wire came back to win

2  Springster   MC50K debut might be nothing more than a route turf muscle her up gimme to drop to the bottom MC level and be fit enough to handle 6 1/2F of dirt and get to the winners circle.......Prat sticking with her supports the notion especially for a Baltas runner

5  Thanks   blinkers go back on this Hess filly after 6 races without them........maybe........to shake things up with this filly who if she manages to provide her best fits fine in this spot

6  Lady Beyonce

race 4    above average clarity

4  Sharp Samurai   all three of our selections in this race are very talented and hard to separate........this fellow gets top billing because of his history racing at 9F on the sod......(6 4 1 0 1)......that and he just put in his best work (5F best of 44 bullet) in many a moon

3  Catapult   six year old won last year's version of this prestigious 9F G2 turf race......it was his only lifetime turf race at 9 furlongs.......that and he is ultra consistent and especially so on firm turf.......2 for 2 on the Dmr turf..........3 for 16 on other turf.......hard not to like to say the least

5  Marckie's Water   3 for 6 racing at 9F on the lawn........3 for 10 at other turf distances.........and man can this Baltas five year old kick it in late......not out of the win picture by any means

race 5    average clarity

2  Scathing   solid race on 6 July at Lrc versus better.......2nd start with Andrew Lerner as the trainer and he has won his last 3 the second time he races a new shooter in the barn.......that'l do

1  Chay Up and Away  blinkers stay on and that is a good thing as this five year old mare is (5 3 1 1) on conventional dirt when wearing them.......and she is also 2 for 2 with Maldonado on her back

6  Halo Darlin   as mentioned above Andrew Lerner has won his last 3 the second time he races a new shooter in the barn and that like our top choice is the case here.......also like our top pick this mare has been facing tougher

5  Tiki Bar Logic

race 6    average clarity

4  Higher Power   just fired his lifetime best (and a solid fit vs. today's foes) and that sure seems noteworthy in that it was his 1st to date on the grass......sharp 5F drill since.......capable of racing on or off of the pace......jock is red hot and Van Dyke usually teams up well riding for Sadler

6  Souter   very consistent runner for Mark Glatt and company and that includes on the Del Mar grass course.....that and he usually is a smooth running sort.......Arroyo should get a nice mid pack position like last out and hopefully once again save some ground most of the way

3  Law Abidin Citizen   double barrel action for Glatt as he also trains our 2nd choice.......believe this gelding or our 4th pick will be on the lead in what should be a reasonable set of fractions.....dangerous sort

5  Bombard

7  Blended Citizen

race 7    average clarity

1  Disco Ball   Koriner youngsters have come out firing to start the new Dmr meeting and this MSW 1st time starter is also training as if he is meant and ready for his debut run.......two of his many drills seem to be very significant......his latest which was a bullet 4F work a week ago and his lone gate work which was also a bullet and at 3F hinting he owns early speed......that and Gryder is 3 for 9 with 3 others hitting the board for the trainer over the last two months

2  Collusion Illusion  rather sure this Glatt 1st time starter is ready to roll off of some stout works......that and the fact the barn bought him just 3 months ago for a cool $300K

6  Defense Wins   another recently purchased (for $175K in March) so the connections got a good look at what the were getting.......and.......O'Neill sure has worked his baby in a manner that suggests he wants him to get to the circle of joy sooner rather than later

race 8    below average clarity

5  Pride's Gold   earned an adjusted for trouble/trip Santucci fig that is 4 1/2 lengths better than par for today's alw level (broke slowly and ran wide)........Eoin Harty is often at his best the 2nd time he takes over the training duties of a given horse like this GB invader.....that and it is reassuring to see 6 works since her last at SA on the 24th of May.....decent pedigree to handle a marathon

2  Aunt Lubie   might be now or never for this costly purchase as she sure hasn't lived up to his $325K purchase price.......however she might have plenty in the tank today as she was blocked in the stretch and maybe not used up because of it......and like our top choice she has a decent pedigree to handle a marathon

6  Curlin's Journey   not much speed inside of her so Gutierrez should be able to get on over to the wood fairly quickly.......that and her endurance might be improved for today's 11 furlongs coming off of a 10F turf race

8  Peter's Kitten

1  Breezy Bee
