Del Mar for Saturday 27 July 2019

Very interesting card this afternoon but not necessarily an easy one to decipher. At least we have some nice morning lines for our top selection in 6 of the 9 races offered today.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Wrecking Crew   work tab is strong and it better be for this colt who went for a cool $875K in March.......white hot rider/trainer combo in Prat & Miller at the helm

4  Howbeit   big improvement in this colt's 2nd lifetime start so much so that his connections wisely move him out of MC and back in the MSW ranks where he debuted........rider upgrade.......good early speed........not out of the win picture.......pun intended

1  Palace Prince   bet hard in his MSW and ran well but was compromised by a bad trip (broke slightly tardy and ran 4 wide on the turn).......Mike Smith likely won't let that happen again

race 2    average clarity

5  Succeedandsurpass   Irish invader winds up in the competent hands of Richie Baltas after racing one very solid AW race last April........copious works put in and they are tightly spaced......all wound up and ready to unwind for his 1st on the grass which he is bred to handle

3  Moody Jim   colt has run two good lifetime grass races one in Ireland and one at CD.....winds up in the hands of the red-hot Jeff Mullins.......hard not to respect his chances the way the trainer has been firing

1  The Longest Night   dangerous speed here if this gelding handles his 1st on the grass and 1st in a route of any kind.......bred decently for both......1st time Mike Smith which suggests this fellow has never felt better........dangerous front running type

7  Mo Forza

race 3    average clarity

2  Cruel Intention   1st two lifetime races were fabulous........his 3rd off of a long layoff was not as he tossed a 4 to 5 clunker..........but his 3 works since strongly suggests he deserves another shot

1  Lieutenant Dan   (5 3 1 1) in sprint races.......and he should have plenty of endurance for today's extended sprint of 7F as he is coming off of a solid 1 1/8 turf race

5  Posterize   speed type draws the attention of Prat and his agent as Prat rides this Ian Kruljac three year old for the 1st time......gelding has won two straight since adding blinkers......still he will need plenty of things to go right to get to the circle of joy today

race 4    below average clarity

2  Afleeting Life   ran evenly after a slightly tardy start in his lone race way back in Oct of 2018.......that effort was down the hill and he showed he can run well on the grass.....returns in a one mile turf race with a new trainer.....small potatoes trainer but not "small potatoes works".......good post and an adequate jock......should be a monster price

6  Hackberry   Dan Blacker colt ran two straight strong 2nd place route turf races earning numbers that were par or better for the MSW level........can he return off of 9 weeks and run as well.......we shall see about 3:30 pm pacific

1  Still in the Game   on the right end of the learning curve and now tries the lawn for the 1st time in his career.......decent pedigree for it........and if he takes to it he should find himself on the front end of things in a race without much speed signed up

5  Speakerofthehouse

8  Ghost Street

race 5    average clarity

6  Don'tteasethetiger   like the sprint-route-sprint maneuver as this three year old needed to build up his endurance......that and he sure is working at Del Mar as if he might fire his lifetime best in his first race over it's main track.......not much speed in the race and he has some.......and stout gate/speed rider sticks around

4  Cross Town   earned a par like fig in his MC50K debut for today's lower level when you adjust for a somewhat tardy start and a 3 wide trip......returns as a 1st time gelding but with 2 dull works showing.......but then again Prat and his agent want the mount.....hard to ignore that

10  My Way Out   high percentage trainer in Andrew Lerner sends out a 2nd time starter who likely needed his MC debut as he went off at 16 to 1 in a 7 horse field at Lrc.....back in 15 days likely as a more fit individual.........stout rider/trainer combo (Fuentes/Lerner) as in 4 for 10 with 3 others hitting the board over the last two months

3  Champion Deputy

1  Lorelei's Warrior

race 6    average clarity

5  Perfect Wager   Mullins is as hot as he has been in many a moon and he has an opportunity to keep the good times rolling with this late runner who likes the Dmr surface.......colt should be motoring late as usual

3  Ishi  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  all three of his conventional dirt races are good efforts.......back in two weeks which seems like a positive for this four year old who was away from the game for 20 months prior to his latest......Peter Miller is hot........hard not to respect this one's chances

4  Tristram Speaker   if this Andy Mathias GG invader can run as well on the Del Mar conventional dirt as he did on the synthetic surface up north he is rated too since arriving at Del Mar aren't much.......but maybe they were just maintenance works......tough call here but definitely has some "big potential"

2  Mr. Brownstone

8  Wild Bean

race 7    average clarity

2  True To Herself    very nice invader from Ireland is training as if this is not a tune-up.....and the fact Prat wants the mount only supports the notion......hard not to like especially since her trainer is outstanding developing turf fillies

1  Great Return   three nice turf sprints to date for this Mandella filly who finally gives route turf racing a whirl.......good post and rider and she owns a pedigree that should handle the two turns of turf.....dangerous sort

7  Velvet Queen  double barrel action for Baltas as he also conditions our top pick.......significant improvement in this girl's latest both in final time and early speed........only grass race at Del Mar was strong where she could have won a Grade 3 if not for a bad start and way too wide of a trip......she did super to only lose by 3 3/4L.......rider/trainer are 2 for their last 4 as a combo over a 2 month period

5  Vibrance

4  Moonless Sky

race 8    average clarity

8  Jalen Journey   a perfect 3 for 3 on "fast" dirt with the blinkers on and the smallest margin of victory 4 1/ also seems noteworthy that the 3 races were at different one turn distances........and look who lands on the Miller Mike Smith

6  Chief Cicatriz   last 4 6F races (4 3 1 0) and look at the times 108:2 at CD - 108:4 at Prm - 108:3 & 107:4 at Tup.......don't see anyone in this field who could do any better than that......and obviously this six year old has shown he can ship and win

7  Recruiting Ready   east coast invader consistently shows up in a big way but he does tend to flatten late thus venerable.......but he gets the hottest rider around in Prat to hold him together when push comes to shove in the late stages of this prestigious G1 6F race

3  Cistron

4  Line Judge

race 9    below average clarity

5  Antigone   tepid top choice mostly because these early two year old grass races around two turns are quite often very eventful affairs trip wise........Callaghan is working up to snuff and she has a pedigree that is stout for the grass and the distance.....and lands a good turf rider in Van Dyke

3  Dolci   another young filly who is working well enough to be ready for today's challenge......and like our top selection she owns a pedigree that suites the distance and the surface

2  Imprint   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  double barrel action for McCarthy as he also trains our 2nd selection.......NY bred but like our 2nd selection this two year old filly is well bred to handle the one mile of turf.......and then there is the Prat factor.....not only is Prat the best grass rider on the grounds but he is especially valuable on youngsters where his expertise really stands out.....likely because of the opportunity to ride (and work) many two year old grass races overseas before coming to the USA

7  A Thousand Dreans

4  Augure
