Del Mar for Saturday 3 August 2019

Not an easy card 10 race card to decipher but on the bright side we only have three morning line favorites as our top choice.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

3  Eclair   Baffert two year old filly 1ster was just bought in June for a cool $420K so Bob pretty much got a good look at what he was getting.......work tab is quite aggressive.......hard not seeing this baby not being a major factor in the outcome of this 6F MSW

2  Bristol Bayou   very strong 5F gate work (and on the Dmr surface) to finish up this a.m. work for this two year old from the John Shirreffs barn.......trainer has had a nice rebound year and might keep the good times rolling with this filly

5  Lazy Daisy   works aren't bad and the trainer Doug O'Neill has had a stellar week so far including winning 5 of the 7 races carded on Wednesday

race 2    below average clarity

5  Polity   in need of a rebound and might be up for one if his best of 80 bullet work on 27 July is worth a hoot.....2 of his 4 lifetime sprint races fit decently here

1  San Giorgio   solid support at the windows in his latest and he did not disappoint........and his trainer is often at his most dangerous 3rd out after layoffs which happens to be the case here for this three year old colt

7  Conquest Smartee   vaulted forward in his latest running a race that would be awfully tough to beat if he was up to similar.......but take note the jock who rode the 9L win is not up......he is on our top pick......seems like a bad sign as well as the fact Sadler didn't move him to a higher level

6  Whatsittoya

race 3    average clarity

5  Stop the Violence   fresh speed (as in one year since his last) from the Miller barn in a turf sprint is one dangerous proposition for the opposition.......that and it is hard to be any hotter than Peter Miller is at the moment

3  Legends of War   race is loaded with speed and this O'Neill colt should be able to take back some off of the pace........three year old owns 2 wins and a 3rd in his 3 starts that were not Stakes races........allowance race today.......hard not to like

7  North County Guy   plenty of speed in this affair should aid this off the pace Baltas four year old put in a strong stretch drive.......and the right guy for the job in Van Dyke is up

1  Smiling Angelo

2  Psycho Dar

race 4    average clarity

2  Fly the Sky   last race wasn't much but his other two lifetime starts are good when considering today's lower maiden level.......along with racing in a maiden claimer for the 1st time he also races as a 1st time gelding.......seems likely to make a good account of himself racing vs softer today

5  Sweet Boy   double barrel action from Miyadi as he also trains our top selection......like the 3 straight gate works to finish off this two year old gelding's a.m. preparation for his MC50K debut......mom has tossed 6 winners from 7 starters......not too shabby

1  Riding With Dino   decent MSW debut at the fair meeting at Pln........two reassuring drills on the Del Mar surface since.......only mount of the day for Pedroza might be a good one........we shall see about 3:30 pacific time

7  Eustace

race 5    average clarity

3  Almalfi Sunrise   ran one of the better two year old MSW races for the two year fillies in S Cal in 2019.......and visually she did so easily........4 nice maintenance works since the 23 June race.......trainer does extremely well developing his two year old stock

1  Comical   O'Neill appears to be in full go mode right now and he sends out one of his very promising youngsters here........filly is 2 for 2 lifetime including a big G3 win at Saratoga 23 days ago.......would have been top choice if she had drawn a better post

4  Shedaresthedevil   good pick up by Simon Callaghan (who also trains our top pick) of a filly who crushed the field in her MSW at CD on 13 June......very nice tightly spaced works her debut.......likely needs a move forward and just might provide it as well as see is training

race 6    below average clarity

2  R Cha Cha   Treece looks as if he gave his new gelding a tune-up in a protected race 1st out following his claim as his thing is "2nd out following a claim" to the tune of 27% with his last 75........five year old is much better on the grass than his (7 1 2 2) record indicates with multiple tough trips......good post and a bug boy up who is well worth his 7 lbs weight break

7  Gutsy Ruler   away for nearly two years but he has put in ample works and only needs to cover 5F of turf which is much easy to have a horse ready for than say 6 1/2F  down the SA hill........gelding has run well vs some tough cookies racing at Dmr at 5F

3  Castle   an abundance of speed in this affair should help this off pace runner.......and he gets the red hot especially on the grass Van Dyke up........a little short on numbers but with the race profile in his favor and a top notch turf rider up he still should be a major player here

5  Dom the Bomb

10  Regal Born

race 7    average clarity

3  Virginia Hall   dead on the board over at Lrc hints the race was a tune-up in a protected race to more fit for her 2nd out following a 2 month break........recent vastly improved 5F drill at Dmr supports the reasoning.......good rider/trainer combo over the last couple of months

8  Goddess Aphrodite   solid a.m. work for this Miller 1st time starter and if the struggling low percentage bug Diaz wasn't up this three year old filly would have been our top choice

2  Second Avenue   both lifetime races fit fairly well here and the debut run is disguised in it's strength........that and one of the trainers better stats is "2nd out following a claim" which is the case here

1  Avalon Ride

6  Durga

race 8    average clarity

6  Valedictorian   race lacks speed and that can play into the hands of this five year old mare as she is awfully formidable when she can sit 1st or 2nd down the back stretch which she should be able to do here........trainer Kelly Breen is 20% win with shippers and 21% win in Graded races

4  Vasilika   fabulous five year old mare does not have her regular rider aboard in Prat but instead gets Leparoux and has to carry 6 lbs. more than our top choice.....the combination of factors suggests she is beatable today

1  Beau Recall   Brad Cox has improved this mare immensely since taking over the training duties 5 races back and if it wasn't for the fact she is a deep closer in a race that seemingly favors those near the front she would be rated higher

8  Toinette  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE

5  Lemoona

race 9    above average clarity

6  Boujie   Miller three year old filly ran one big race in her maiden debut at Dmr (and in general likes the Dmr main track) so you know she can handle and is likely ready off of the 7 month hiatus from racing......and who rode in her monster debut......none other than today's ride Drayden Van Dyke

1  Message   last race is one big number and she gets ample time off between starts to recover physically from the effort.......would have been top choice if is wasn't for drawing post 1 which is no picnic at Del Mar at the 6 1/2 furling distance

9  Give Me a Hint   a perfect 3 for 3 on the dirt and she improved with each and every start..........turf tightener off of the layoff in her latest.....should be go time today and for a hot trainer in Bob Hess and with his pal Desormeaux in the saddle

7  Tijori

8  Tapitha Bonita

race 10    below average clarity

6  Equal Measure   like the rider change to Desormeaux especially for a route turf runner.......filly has been very consistent turf or dirt and seems very sharp in the a.m. following a two month break.......should get a decent stalk or mid pack position behind some suspect speed types

4  Fashion Island   lifetime best was her debut in a one mile grass race at Del Mar.......it was her only race to date at Del Mar and at time time for a very low percentage turf trainer........like our top choice Baltas (high % turf trainer)  has given this filly a nice break and takes the blinkers off......and the move looks like a good one as she has put in a nice series of works........like our top pick she should get a decent stalk or mid pack position behind some suspect speed types

9  Daddy's Melody   not much in her latest at Ind following a major "wake-up" race two back at CD.......shows up in the Dollase barn with the ship and win bonus staring them in the face.........owns some tactical speed and with speed jock Maldonado up so there is a high likelihood she should be able to get on over enough by turn one to make things doable

8  Dulverton Darling

1  Zucchera

5  Boldest Vow
