Del Mar for Sunday 4 August 2019

Very interesting second half of the card this afternoon with some decent morning lines on our selections. Be back with you on Wednesday.

Best of luck as always

race 1    below average clarity

5  Sheza Factor   cut back in distance of a full furlong after 3 straight one mile route races should help her stamina when push comes to shove in the late stages of this 7 furlong sprint......she also races turf to dirt which in his past has been a good move for her

3  Super Klaus   only race when up for a tag led to her lone lifetime win.........and her best to date was run in her lone lifetime sprint at a distance and at a distance only 1/16 less than today

6  Fuega   raced on the dirt in her latest for the first time in her 5 race career and it led to graduation day.........likely will need to build on the race to handle the tougher level.......and if she does her pedigree suggests 7F should be a good fit

race 2    below average clarity

2  Juggles   three year old won his only race at today's 5F turf distance in a race over at Santa Anita.........connections are at risk of losing him for $35K so my guess is O'Neill realizes this and will have him very ready for today's race........and if they don't lose him they will have a runner eligible for the starter alw races

3  Boa Nova   seems like the speed of the speed and with a rider who knows how to get a horse on the lead in Maldonado

7  Gobsmack   away since December but returns in a new barn (Mathis who is doing well with limited starters at the meeting) for his return to the race wars and as a first time hint his new trainer has him fit and ready.......first on the grass but a better than average pedigree for it

6  Toothless Wonder

race 3    average clarity

7  Dr Wysong  back to sprinting and back to Prat following 2 route grass races (without Prat) where she can up empty which made some sense as her pedigree suggests "sprint" only.....trainer sure could use a win

2  Quit Kvetching  nice winning MSW debut over at Lrc for this Ellis filly who might make a move forward in her 2nd lifetime start off of two nice works at Del Mar since arriving from Lrc.......and Ellis sure has started off the meeting at Del Mar with a bang

6  Early's Kid   a perfect two for two in sprints (one on the AW and one on the conventional dirt) and the one on conventional dirt (run at Pln) looks awfully good here if she can run as well on the Dmr surface......two nice drills at Del Mar hint she might.......trainer is off to a good start at the meeting

5  Wishful

race 4    below average clarity

4  Fabozzi  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  Glatt is often at his most dangerous with horses dropping precipitously off of long layoffs like this six year old is today......gelding is training up to snuff and then some.......Cedillo has won his last two mounts for the trainer.....race profile seems to favor the off of the pace boys

8  Offshore   as stated above the race profile seems to favor the off pace runners.........not only has this gelding run solid efforts/figs in turf routes since the Baltas claim but he has drawn the attention of top in Ortiz - Rosario and now Prat.......away since New Years Eve but training awfully well for his return to the race wars

10  Bam Bam Bryan   might be quite the claim by Saavedra of a gelding who is (5 3 2 0) in two turn grass races and coming off a 10L win after an awkward start at LS......and the red hot Van Dyke grabs the mount......on the negative side of the equation he is one of many speed types in this race and with a difficult post to cope with

2  Moonlight Drive

1  Gabo's Macondo

race 5    above average clarity

1   Shooters Shoot   two year old MSW 1st timer was just purchased in April for a $300K so the connections got a good look at what they were set of drills for an Eurton 1st timer in many a moon.......Eurton gets Prat to accept the sire is off to a hot start

6  Eight Rings   Baffert colt cost a bundle as a yearling going for $520K at Kee last tab wasn't much until this colt hit the Dmr surface where he popped two straight 5F bullet gate works to finish his a.m. preparation.......hard to split our top two picks

7  Express Train   another expensive buy at the Kee Sept yearling sale as he went for only $20K less than our 2nd selection........Shirreffs has had a very nice 2019 overall but he has been a little chilly so far at Del Mar to start the meeting........he might jump start things here

3  Phast Pharoah

2  Flash of Promise  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE

race 6    average clarity

6  Landeskog   talented three year old sure is working awfully aggressively since returning home from Belmont with 6 works put in since his 9 June race out east........rather sure O'Neill means business today with his youngster.......and the 5 1/2 furlong distance appears to be a plus

12  Distinctive B  loves Del Mar and runs extremely well 2017 he ran a giant race in July at Dmr and the strength of the race is disguised.......that race was run off of a 6 1/2 month layoff.......then in 2018 off of a 7 1/2 month layoff he won for fun at today's same level on 26 Aug......believe he is ready once again off a 5 month break.......and if he is ready he should be tough from start to finish for Miller and company

4  Rafal   ran a big effort/fig two back at today's 5 1/2 furlong distance albeit on an off track at SA.......turf race in his latest wasn't bad but it appears to have muscled up this Baffert runner as he has 6 solid works since the 9 June turf race........dangerous sort

5  Grinning Tiger

8  Jack Van Berg

race 7    average clarity

5  Stubbins   believe this colt to be at his best on the turf......with that in mind it might be quite significant that he ran one big race sprint turf to one mile sloppy track (in a race taken off the turf) winning by 8L earning a big fig......believe the outcome would have been similar if the race had stayed on the turf.......turf sprint in last - turf route rider/trainer combo......hard not to like

4  Golden Birthday   brutally wide trip on the turf from the 11 post in his latest at one mile (what's new).........three year old earned an adjusted Santucci fig that is par for the G3 level.........4 post today should help Talamo make amends and likely at a handsome price

1  Neptune's Storm   might be rated too low but this gelding sure has lucked out in his last two races stalking very soft fractions and that likely won't occur today......that and he has to carry 6 more lbs than our top choice and 9 more lbs than our 2nd pick.......still don't get me wrong he will be a major player especially with the red hot Van Dyke up

6  Jasikan

3  Gregorian Chant

race 8    average clarity

(there is a Super High Five carryover of $11,880)

9  Wilt  trainer has been sending out live runners so far at the meeting and I believe he has another here with this MSW to MC20K drop down......1st on conventional dirt but he just worked awfully well on the Del Mar main track

8  Lucky Wally  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  very significant move forward in his 2nd lifetime start in September of 2nd out after the layoff today might be one dangerous proposition for today's opposition......and take note he was absolutely dead on the board in his 19 July layoff race

6  Go Sammy Go   MC debut was a decent effort.....2nd start - not so good.......but Periban claimed and he might have made a good move putting the blinkers on today as this gelding sure is training very well in the a.m.

4  Black Storm

1  Bourbon and Water

2  Mr. Class
