Del Mar for Thursday 22 August 2019

So so race card this afternoon. Be back with you tomorrow.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

1  Swirling   handles the distance and that includes at Dmr........mare should finish well and many in here will not......that and the small field should make Espinoza's job easier handling this late runner as traffic should be at a minimum

2  Cyrielle   two dull efforts in her only two starts in 2018......gets 3 1/2 months off to right the ship and returns with a new trainer in Mike Puype........and one of the trainer's more dangerous stats is "1st start with trainer".....a.m. prowess supports the idea that this mare will mount a rebound

3  C Q Covergirl   six year old mare has been eating cash as she has gone off favorite in her last 5 races and failed to even tough she appears as the most likely to lead she is hard to count on.......dangerous but beatable

race 2    average clarity

4  Unicorn   on the improve with each and every grass race and now races on the dirt for the first time in 4 lifetime races.......and her pedigree to handle the dirt seems as good as her pedigree to handle the turf......last race she earned an adjusted Santucci fig that is 3L better than par for the level.......sure seems like the one to beat if she does take to the grass

3  Crystal Lake   solid fractional times in her latest which was her 1st at a route.......decent 2nd place effort which if she can build off of it will give her an opportunity to be a handful from start to finish

1  Pink Scatillac   set a nasty pace in her last in a turf route and rightfully tired.......might get loose on the lead here in her 1st on the dirt........noteworthy rider change as everything Glatt has given to Cedillo has pretty much been "live"

race 3    average clarity

4  Staythirstymyamigo   appreciates the Del Mar main track more than the other California tracks and that might be part of the impetus for dropping her and risking her at the lowest tag of her life.....dangerous sort for sure

6 Thanks   solid wake-up with the blinkers put on in her latest which was in a MC20K.......she graduated with a effort/fig that fits for today's 12.5Knw2 level........Hess has been winning at a 36% rate at the meeting and part of his success has been spotting his horses where they can win

1  Be Lifted Up   a good portion of her career fits solidly including her latest....... but....... she takes a suspicious multi-level drop........flip a coin

race 4    average clarity

3  Leroy  in need of a drop and gets it and draws the services of Joe Talamo coming off of a good week of racing.....race two back at SA is solid and hidden somewhat in it's strength by running wide up on the pace.....1st on the Dmr surface is a ? mark

5  Toothless Wonder  turf to dirt and trainer in Bob Hess and especially with Bejarano who is 4 for his last 8 for the conditioner......hard not to like

9  Torpedo Away   OK effort off of the layoff in his latest which was run on 18 July.....3 works since and the blinkers go on today.......believe he will show more early speed today and if he does he has a shot at the front end.........right where you want a 7 lbs bug boy who is still riding rather "raw"

1  Union Rebel

7  Handsome John

race 5    average clarity

8  Lemon King  like yesterday's 2nd choice who scratched (race 1 in the filly version of this two year old Cal-bred race) this two year old also appears to be wound up like a top and ready to unwind in his MSW debut.......and he draws the attention of Prat and his agent......Yakteen is 3 for his last 12 with runners debuting on the turf

9  Fantasy Game   decent 1st on the lawn and the effort was in open company......but he goes from an inside post to the outer-most 9 post.........when the rail is 30 out it makes the 1st turn come up awfully quick......would have been top choice with a more advantageous starting position

5  Handsome Cat   sprint-sprint-route scenario for this Matt Chew runner who ran an improved effort in his latest........turf pedigree is decent for the turf........rider sure could use a win

2  Whispering Flame

3  One Fast Bro

race 6    average clarity

3  Qahira   two for two in fast rated sprints and this filly from the Baffert barn won them both rather easily......capable of handling a fast pace but also showed she can win without the front end........Talamo wisely stays put

2  Mo See Cal   yet to race in a dirt sprint but she did preform well in a turf sprint.......cut back in distance is often a good thing when racing at 7 furlongs.......tough rider/trainer combo in Prat/Miller

5  Show It N Moe It   much needed class relief for this Sherlock mare especially at Dmr where this gal is only 1 for 8.......she likely will sit in the rear of the field and come motoring late

race 7    below average clarity

5  Darling Demon   MSW 1st time starter has decent turf breeding for a Cal bred.........and Ed Moger has a 1st and a 2nd with his last two 1st time starters debuting on the lawn.......and he gets Bejarano to accept the mount......might be a live 1st timer and at a bit of a price

3  Concise Advice   another MSW filly 1st time starter that has a good pedigree for the lawn......and like our top choice draws a rider who is one of the top turf jocks on the grounds

4  Slew South   yet another 1st time starter that appears interesting in her MSW has tossed two winners with 2 starers and they both were able to win on the turf........and Neil French has hit the board with his last two 1st time starters debuting on the grass

8  Apache Pass

6  Radish
