Del Mar for Friday 22 November 2019

After today only 6 more days left at Del Mar. Hope to make the most of them.

Best of luck as always!

MANY SCRATCHES ON THIS CARD AS THE RACES WERE OFF THE TURF

race 1    average clarity

4  For Him   last win came 6 races back racing sprint to route and with a multiple level drop in claiming price.........same scenario today and for a trainer in Steve Knapp who is starting to heat things up a bit

1  Miracle March   seems like the most likely to get the lead and if this gelding does grab it you have to upgrade his chances as he is a perfect 2 for 2 on the dirt when he has got it......decent jock on the front end in T C Baze

2  Autumn Day   fits OK if he is capable of handling two turns on the conventional dirt but his pedigree doesn't exactly scream "route"......but on the other hand his a.m. preparation is strong especially for the likes of Miyadi who does't push them too hard in the mornings

race 2    average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf and moved to the main track 5-4-2-3-6)

3  The Stiff   bad trips in all 4 lifetime starts that were at today's one mile distance on the grass........and his latest is his best and is quite a bit better than par when you adjust for trouble.......good post and a rider upgrade.......and drops into MC for the 1st time albeit at a lofty MC level of $80K

2  Handsome Michael   moved forward in his 2nd lifetime start both of which were turf routes.......blinkers go on and he already had as much early turf route speed as anyone in the field......good speed jock Edwin Maldonado wisely sticks around

4  Jamason   Hess colt went off at 34 to 1 in his MSW 5 1/2 furlong turf debut suggesting the race was a tune-up to muscled up and be ready for today's turf route.......and the "gimme" wasn't bad and disguised by bit of a slow start and a wide trip too shabby

9  Blues Rapper

7  Kadesh

race 3    average clarity

1  Rare Find   good par like MSW debut at the difficult challenge of a two turn race for a 1ster especially at two........and Richard Mandella is an eye popping 35% win "2nd time route".......Prat landed on our 2nd choice but Cedillo will do just fine

6  Saralin   $1.3 million baby ran just OK in her MSW debut but goes on Lasix for the 1st time which is a strong move for Callaghan (6 for his last 21 with an ROI of +4.74).....that and since her debut this filly worked a solid best of 44 bullet four furlong drill

5  Go Big Blue Nation   quite the move forward in her 1st at a route albeit a route on the grass........and the effort is hidden by plenty of trip trouble.......she has shown she can handle the dirt and might feel really good today racing a muscled up turf to dirt

race 4    above average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf and moved to the main track 7-5-2-4-1)

5  Go Time  hard to get a better spot for this two year old GP invading baby who won his MC50K debut which was on the grass at 5F........bred just fine for a turf route........gets two significant upgrades.......a decent rider change and one heck of a trainer change.......hard not to like this two year old gelding

6  Commander  plenty of turf experience and in for the lowest level of his career.......and one would surmise he is meant and ready this afternoon as the connections might lose him by way of the claiming box........that and he only went for $40K at sale so why not risk him for $50K

2  Fly the Sky   route speed two year old gelding has been in all three of his grass races (all of which were at today's distance) from start to finish........that has led to a win and two very competitive 2nd's......but he might need a small improvement today if our top two choices run as well as I think they will today.......definitely has a shot but on the other-hand easy to make as third pick-a-rue

7  Gonvenor Cinch

race 5    above average clarity

3  Carnelian Hero   strong move forward in his 2nd lifetime endeavor and the strength of the effort is disguised by breaking poorly and then rushing up.........he broke even worse in his debut.......but if he repeats his last effort he could still win this race with a slow start unless one of the 3 1sters are better than I think

4  Papa Tony   might be muscled up with better endurance coming into this 6F dirt sprint.........his latest which appeared to public work-out on the turf and at a distance might have him much more fit......and the fact he returns off of only 8 days rest supports the idea he might have been pointed for today's race and not his last

2  Baltimore Beecho   significant move forward in his 2nd lifetime start which was run off of 22 days rest........not much in his 3rd start which was run off off 41 days rest and at a distance that might be a little to far for him.........back in 22 days and races at a furlong less......interesting price shot

6  Extractor

8  Slewbury Park

race 6    average clarity

1  Kookie Gal   lifetime best was run one turf to one mile dirt 4 races back albeit at Lrc.......one mile turf race in last and one mile dirt race today........and it seems significant that this filly ran her best turf race to date in her latest.......it suggests she she might to be up to a new lifetime top back on the dirt

3  Persepolis   sprint-sprint- route scenario for this Mandella filly who might be more suited to a dirt route and the two sprints are quite good......hard not seeing this four year old making a good account of herself this afternoon

4  Cyrielle   incredible solid 1st in a dirt route in his latest pressing a pace that was quite fast for the given day which was one of the slower SA racing surfaces of the year........he earned 6 lengths of pace adjustment and earned a Santucci fig that was 5 lengths better than par for today's nw alw level.......Prat did land on our 2nd pick but pace evaluation is often hidden from agents as well as to  "The Sheets" & "Thoro-graph"

race 7    average clarity

8  Catoca   seems like a good spot 1st after the Mullins claim as this four year old filly seems at her best on conventional dirt.......and one of her 3 races (all around two turns) on the "real thing" fit solidly here if she can run as well in today's one turn 7F sprint

5  Whoa Nessie   needs her effort/fig earned 3 races back.......back to the jock that rode her that day.......like our top choice she does have something to prove in a sprint

2  Velvet Queen   about 1/2 of this girl's lifetime races (all on the sod) look solid here if of course she can run as good or better on the dirt..........she owns a pedigree that suggests she can

7  Mongolian Empire

3  Claudelle

race 8    below average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf and moved to the main track 2-7-5-1-13)

2  Big Time Grammy   nice 1st on the lawn in her 2nd lifetime start........3 reassuring drills since the effort........1st time Prat is not only a jock upgrade for a grass race but hints this Tim Yakteen filly has never been sharper

4  Lakaya   race two back vs. open company was fairly good.......last race was decent as this filly closed into a ridiculously slow pace to finish 4th.........3 tightly spaced drills since her 19 Oct race......look for Bejarano to sit closer today......good pedigree to handle a turf course with some give to it

10  Sassyserb   blinkers go on for today's race and with her best ever 4F speed work just put in a week ago.......so she likely will show more early speed today which should help A. Cedillo from getting caught too wide on the 1st turn.......like this girl's chances if Abel gets that accomplished

5  Ride Sally Ride

8  Via Alpina

7  Creer
