Santa Anita for Saturday 28 December 2019

Let's all cross our fingers that the next six months at Santa Anita turn out to be one of the safest in many years for horse and rider.

The stars are on display at The Great Race Place today.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Devil Made Me Doit   best set of drills for a two year old MSW 1st time starter from the O'Neill barn in quite some time........that and his two year went for a lot of money considering his pedigree hinting he was a "looker" at sale last June

4  Provost   plenty of furlongs of works put into this Sadler 1st time starter who like our top selection went for a lot of money considering his pedigree.......draws Joel Rosario......and take note that John Salder had a solid opening day at Santa Anita in 2018

6  Garth   both lifetime MSW races for this Baffert two year old are par like efforts.......mainly placed as the 3rd selection because so far he has flattened out in late stretch when push comes to shove

1  Moon Mischief

race 2    below average clarity

6  Lucky Peridot   away since early October but Miller appears to have his filly fit and ready to roll off of some nice a.m. work.......and the fact that Javier Castellano rides supports the notion as when Peter legs up the top notch turf jock his stock is usually very live

1  Keeper Ofthe Stars   many signs suggested this filly would dislike going as far as 11 furlongs in her last start so we made her our 3rd selection in the marathon race as the heavy favorite.......and she tired badly as we feared she would..........back to a distance she likes........very dangerous

7  Sold It   badly in need of some time off and O'Neill wisely gave it to this three year old filly........and if her a.m. work is worth a hoot she it appears as if she has greatly benefited from the 4 1/2 month layoff

5  Angel Alessandra

2  Brill

race 3    average clarity

5  Rickie Nine Toe's   hard not to like this two year old filly if she can duplicate her debut as the effort appears to be mighty tough in this spot......and then there is the fact that Koriner is dynamite with 2nd time starters as in 12 for his last 36 and with 12 others hitting the board

6  Golden Melodie   1st two lifetime races look good in this spot........might have three straight excuses in her next three race......didn't like turf.......no shot in next and she dueled on a dead rail at SA........maybe didn't like blinkers in her last.....they are off today......very dangerous if those three "excuses" are valid

3  Swift Socks   very bad start in her MC debut but she did show some life after her bad beginning........so giving her a gate work since seems like a good move by Bill Spawr........some shot here if she breaks well and builds off of her debut

9  It's a Riddle

2  Kuda Huraa

race 4    average clarity

1  Fivestar Lynch   plenty of positives for this Baltas three year old gelding........good post.......good grass jock in Prat........gelding has a good shot at getting a nice ground saving stalk position........good pedigree to handle a grass course with some give to it......hard not to like

3  Turn the Switch   Eurton's gelding was shuffled back some early or could have been much closer to the front in his last which was his 1st on the grass and a decent effort.......wouldn't be surprised if he sits much closer today with speed jock Maldonado remaining up

7  Montana Moon  both lifetime one mile grass races fit fine here and both were with Fuentes up......should sit on or near the lead in this spot.......trainer is often at his best 3rd out after a layoff which is the case here for this three year old colt

8  Muskoka

5  Camps bay

race 5    above average clarity

2  Gift Box   Sadler six year old has run exceptionally well in all three lifetime starts at Santa Anita any of which would handle this group of foes........he is capable on or off of the pace and he has shown he can hold together setting fast fractions........Rosario remains up and he was aboard for all of his SA races

6  Midcourt   last two races are par like efforts for the Grade 2 level........but.......he might need a break thru to even better today as our top choice is awfully talented if he is fully fit and ready fresh off of the bench as I obviously believe he is

3  KIng Abner   five year old will need lifetime best and the some if our top two selections run as well as I think they will.........works are encouraging as they have never been better.........stranger things have happened

1  Gray Magician

race 6    above average clarity

7  Giza Goddess   filly predictably regressed in her latest as she was competing after a significant vault forward on 26 October........that and she seems to appreciate the SA grass much more than the Del Mar grass.........jock upgrade today especially for route speed type who appears to be the controlling speed in the race

5  Lady Prancealot   best of the off pace types in this Grade 2 affair.........and whereas our top and 3rd picks have something to prove at 10F this filly acts like the mini-marathon distance will fit her quite well.........dangerous sort

3  Mucho Unusual   like our top selection this filly is at her best competing on the SA turf and she has won on a SA turf that had some give to it........ten furlongs might be a challenge but she has a grass rider in Rosario to help her get the distance

2  Apache Princess

8  Vibrance

race 7    average clarity

5  Bellafina   three year old filly is (5 4 1 0) at SA on the dirt and (6 1 1 1) elsewhere on the dirt......that and she appears at her very best competing at the somewhat specialty distance of 7F.......Prat knows her inside and out........hard not to put on top

6  Bell's the One   filly appears to be on the desired end of the learning curve and she has trained "lights out" since her last race which was her 1st Graded race win and a Grade 2 at that..........and take note it was at today's 7F distance

1  First Star   three year old from the Ellis barn has done little wrong in 3 lifetime starts and for the first time today she gets to race where she trains the majority of the time.......not impossible to get to the circle of choice is our top choice has an off day or/and a bad trip

9  Mother Mother

2  Del Mar May

race 8    average clarity

2  Excellent Sunset   very consistent sort (albeit with only 2 wins) who ran 2nd in the 2018 version of this 9F Grade 3 grass race despite a bad trip (veered out from the outer-most 8 post and ran somewhat wide)........that and she owns a pedigree that should handle a grass course that likely will have some give to it

7  Mirth   very dangerous route speed grass filly from the D'Amato barn who appears to only have to cope with the 6 horse trying to get a loose lead........cut back in distance from two straight 10F affairs to a 9F race should be a plus

1  Tiny Tina   seems at her best on gd/yl turf and that is what she likely will get this afternoon......and she also gets Prat aboard for the 1st time in 4 races hinting that she likely is feeling good

3  Don't Blame Judy

5  Curlin's Journey

race 9    average clarity

5  Omaha Beach   (6 4 2 0) on main track surfaces and his last 5 racing endeavors look awfully good versus today's foes........and what a strong six work series he has put in since his 2 Nov. 2nd place finish in the BCDirtMiG1......only race run at today's 7F was a 9L win.......hard not to like

4  Roadster   by far at his best at Santa Anita as in two wins and two seconds four races run including a G1 win in the SA Derby last April.......dangerous sort getting to compete on his favorite surface

2  Complexity   3 for 4 in one turn races with the average winning distance a little short of 5 lengths........that and he likely feels great following his latest win where he was geared down late likely saving plenty for today's race........Chad Brown ships many turf horse to the West Coast but not many dirt runners so he must really like the way this guy is doing

race 10    average clarity

5  Mo Forza   vastly improved in his last two races which were both nine furlong grass races one of which was on a turf course rated "good"........not sure if he can run as well at 8F but if he does he should get a nice mid pack trip with one fine turf rider in Joel Rosario in the the irons

3  Ocean Fury   two of his last three races fit decently here and both of the races were at today's one mile dirt distance.......and he likely is feeling good to land Prat in a Grade 2 race where he is usually in high demand

6  Neptune's Storm   three year old gelding has been ultra consistent since Baltas took over the training duties 7 races back and might be at his best at 8F where he has won 3 of 4........that and if the turf is less than firm it likely will be a plus and won't be for quite a few in here

8  Proud Pedro

7  Kingly

race 11    average clarity

2  Include the Tax   colt has needed ample time off between starts and McCarthy shows patience and gives it to his 4th start maiden.........his latest race which was on Halloween was his best to date and if he can duplicate today (and with one significant rider upgrade) he sure appears to be the one to overcome

11  Totally Tiger   young and successful trainer Andrew Lerner likes to win races so the drop into MC for the 1st time is more of a sign of wanting another trip to the winners circle rather than wanting his horse claimed.......that and Lerner is very stout with the turf to dirt move which is the case this afternoon for this two year old........very dangerous MSW to MC runner

3  Champs Success   decent debut and with plenty of support at the windows but he likely needs better today.........he does receive a better rider on his back today and gets to race on a fast rated track for the first time.......so.......if he didn't like the good surface in his debut he might fit in this spot

5  Tiger the Man

9  Jungle Boy
