Santa Anita for Saturday 18 January 2020

Sign up for Pegasus Cup day is now available.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Play Money   on the right end of the learning and training in preparation for today's race like the uptrend can continue this afternoon......sure like the 23 furlongs of drills put in since his last race run on 8 Dec........those endurance building works should help him handle the furthest distance of his career

5  Coast of Roan   good trip in his 1st grass race led to graduate day........bad trip in his 2nd lifetime race led to an off the board effort in his next jock today and a hungry one in Bejarano who is due to break out of a slump in a big way

7  Jet Set Ruler   fairly consistent off pace runner has never run further than one mile and has a somewhat suspect pedigree to appreciate 9F of turf......but.......he sure can finish up well at 8F and Baltas is awfully stout (maybe the best in S Cal) at getting his turf stock at longer distances

3  Push Through

race 2    average clarity

3  Takethediamondlane   four year old Cal-bred filly has shown she can run fresh and she is training as if she should once again fire a big effort fresh off of the bench.......race lacks speed and this filly has some........rider is a bit chilly but has teamed up rather well with Koriner over the years

6  Time for Suzzie   last three wins at Santa Anita came the last three times this four year old filly raced at today's 6F distance.........and the latest of the three wins was run two races back and was her lifetime best and with today's bug boy up

5  D's Lovely Sophia   dull efforts in his last two races but since her last race she has trained markedly better hinting that Palma has tweaked something for the better.......filly finally gets the race where she trains........for the 1st time someone other than E Flores gets the mount and that rider is much more accomplished.........and as stated above Mr. Bejarano is due to break out of a slump in a big way

1  Time for Ebby

race 3    average clarity

1  Just Grazed Me   five year old mare has made the most of her 10 career races (10 6 3 1) and when she races at 6 1/2F (turf or dirt) she is especially tough (6 5 0 1)........low percentage jock but he rides this mare well.......should sit 2 or 3 lengths off of the lead and come flying in the stretch

3  Stealthediamonds   distinct lack of speed in this race makes it highly likely that this speed filly will be on the lead.......but Delgadillo better do his best to slow her down some (after getting a loose lead) early because she is 2 for 2 at 5F on the grass but 0 for 2 at 5 1/2F on the grass........she has flattened out late......but then again she didn't get a loose lead in the 5 1/2F races but did in her 5F races

7  Lippy   filly seemingly owns enough early speed to grab a distant stalk position........if that is the case she should get 1st crack at overtaking the 3 horse.......if she does then she needs to hold off our top easy task but maybe doable and at a price

5  Apache Princess

race 4    below average clarity

3  Seizetheday Rexy   mom has tossed 3 winners from 3 starters and this O'Neill 1ster has popped some decent drills now and then especially for a MC debut runner........and the colt draws the attention of Prat and his agent

4  Nonno's Polaris   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  nice move forward in his 2nd lifetime endeavor earning a par like figure for today's slightly tougher level........not crazy about it taking him 10 weeks to get back in action but maybe he was pointed to today's enhanced purses even for a Cal-bred MC50K

9  Royally Big   Ellis has won with half of his last dozen MC 1st time has tossed 5 winners from 6 to start and the new sire Mr. Big is off to a very good beginning......dangerous sort

6  Alibi for Mischief

10  Papa Tony

race 5    average clarity

1  Baja Sur   sizzling rider/trainer combo........four year old gelding is (6 5 1 0) lifetime......two running times stand out here -107:4 at Emd and 108:3 at GG........don't see anyone in here capable of running those if this fellow handles the SA surface he should be tough

2  Fashionably Fast   seems likely to get a very nice ground saving stalking position in his quest for his 5th straight win since the blinkers were removed.......and take note that Tiago Pereira becomes one tough rider (more so than most) when he is well proven on a given horse which he is here

6  Lieutenant Dan   last three times this gelding has raced in fast track conventional dirt sprints he has won by 8L and 2 1/4L and 3L.....away since 25 August but his a.m. work hints he is fit and ready to roll

4  Heck Yeah

race 6    above average clarity

6  Desmond Doss   doubt this colt was all out in his layoff run in his latest and yet he won his 5 1/2 furlong prep and not with the best of trips........race two back was a 200K Cal-bred Stakes and he ran extremely well only being beaten by 2+ lengths for the win despite a brutal trip........jock upgrade today.......8 to 1 ML would be nice

5  Wound Tight   Hess five year old should be on or near the front in what should be a reasonable pace up front......and the only time this fellow raced at today's 9F turf distance he won impressively

1  Ward 'n Jerry   like our 2nd selection this gelding should sit close up early in a race where that appears rather beneficial.......Italian jock Rispoli has plenty of talent riding on the turf and I am starting to feel as if he might have as much talent on the grass as anyone at SA

8  Ashleyluvssugar

4  The Hunted

race 7    below average clarity

1  Bettor Trip Nick   tepid top pick can really fly and if he takes to the conventional dirt at SA after 4 wins and a 2nd on the AW at GG he can add to his stellar record (5 4 1 0) this afternoon........pedigree seems OK for it

5  Club Aspen   latest race which was his 1st to date racing two turns on the dirt looks awfully stout here if he can duplicate it.........but that is kind of up in the air as his only race on the SA main track is dull.......tough call

8  Fast Enough   lone lifetime race was run way back in May but is very strong.......away since but by my book he is outworking anyone in the field and he owns a decent pedigree to take to route easy task to run your 1st route off of such a long break but still doable

4  Summer Fire

3  Sacred Rider

race 8    average clarity

1  Almost a Factor   very solid time/fig beating open company in her lone grass race which was run last Sept as a two year old........that race fits fine here and so does one significant rider upgrade Franco to Prat

9  Smiling Shirlee   very impressive three year old filly at any distance on the dirt.......and her pedigree for the turf hints that her 1st race on it can be just as good as her dirt endeavors.......fits solidly if that is the case

4  Been Studying Her   2 for 3 when Mike Smith has been up and the "miss" was a very respectable 4th in a Grade 1 affair.......last race was dull but a fast bullet 5F drill and back to Smith hint of a solid rebound

3  Bulletproof One

5   Warren's Showtime

race 9    average clarity

1  Tigre Di Slugo   won his MSW debut over at Dmr in a time for the given day that is par for today's nw alw level.......and he ran par despite breaking poorly and running a bit wide.......and today he gets to race at SA where he trains

3  Afternoon Heat   vastly improved since Knapp claimed 4 races fact his last two fast track efforts since Knapp took over are strong efforts earning adjusted for trip Santucci figs that are better than par

2  Loafers Boy   trainer is dynamite turf to dirt to the tune of 30% win with his last 30 with the move.......and coming off of a route turf race should aid this fellow's endurance when push comes to shove in this 6 1/2 furlong affair

12  Principe Carlo

6  Short of Ez
