Santa Anita for Thursday 30 January 2020

Not much quality for today's card but it was good to see that both Friday & Saturday card's are just the opposite.

Best of luck as always!

race 1   average clarity

2  Grandpa Louie   barn is hot and seems likely to be going after another win here with this four year old gelding who drops into MC racing for the 1st time following a failed effort with the blinkers going on.......they are off today and with just what you want to see as in two nice preparatory drills

4  Abusive Grey   lifetime best in latest in a one mile grass race and the strength of the effort was disguised by 4 or 5 lengths of trip adjustment.......that effort fits fine at today's lower level if he can run as well shortening up to 6F and switching to the main track.......tough call if he can

6  Royal Aspirations   on the improve with each and every start but had to go on the sidelines after his 3rd start back in Feb. of 2019........returns for start number four with a new much higher win % trainer in Jeff Mullins.......appears be training quite well for Mr. Mullins so the step up in claiming seems more of a vote of confidence rather than a tune-up at a level no one would claim

3  Onebadrooskie

race 2    average clarity

3  Shanghai Barbie   steadily improving and all of the improvement has been made with today's jockey Fuentes in the saddle.........and his latest race is disguised in it's strength.......and take note she put in an easy 51H drill 4 days prior to her last......just worked an easy 51H again four days ago........hmmm

5  Boonesboro Beauty   barn has been firing better than the trainer's overall record would indicate and his record is not bad with 2 wins & 2 2nd's with 12 starters.........3rd out after the layoff and drops........seems very dangerous

4  Reds Sacred Appeal   low percentage jock has been up for 9 consecutive races.........Rosario is up today..........that hints that this four year old filly is likely doing well and might fire a strong effort........we shall see at about 1:30 pacific time

race 3    way below average clarity

3  Chris Is Ready   two lifetime starts which both were run in 2018 in Florida were poor but both were turf routes........new trainer today in Bill Spawr and he has put a boat load of a.m. work into his new member to his barn.........and one work might be quite telltale .....that work was 10 drills back and is very strong........believe Spawr backed off since with some tight interval training but nothing flashy to keep the claiming vultures at bay

1  Diva in Charge   another with only two starts and returning off of a long layoff........work tab at LA is very good......takes that ever dangerous drop from MSW racing to MC which is one of the more dangerous maneuvers from the Peter Eurton barn.......rider is ice cold and should be very hungry for a win

7  Fresh Face   SCRATCHED OUT FROM THE RACE  might be appropriately named as she is a new shooter who is training awfully well and faces one soft looking group in her MC40K debut.......mom has tossed 2 winners from 2 starters

4  Mucho Macho Woman

race 4    average clarity

7  Go Daddy Go   four lifetime races to date and his best by far was the only time he got to run off of short rest (21 days)......and........it was also the only time he ran with blinkers on (and he showed much better early speed)........so that bodes well for today's race 2nd out after a layoff (25 days rest)........and........with the blinkers going back on.........jock upgrade to boot

2  Commanding Chief   Salder barn has started the SA meeting a little chilly but shows some signs of awakening of late.......four year old colt ran two one mile grass races last fall and both were better than par for the MSW level and disguised some in their strength.........her 1st race in 2020 was also a one mile grass race and the fig is weak but toss it out as it was one of those pace-less affairs where it is impossible to run a valid fig

8  Border Town   like our 2nd selection his 1st race in 2020 was a one mile grass race and the fig is weak but toss it out as it was one of those pace-less affairs where it in impossible to run a valid fig........this colt easily closed the fastest but once again seems pace compromised as he is quite slow early and our top two selections should on or near a soft paced lead

6  Cardiff Cay

3  Muralist

race 5    average clarity

2  Will Dancer  here is part of the comment I gave for this fellow (top pick) prior to his latest, "lifetime best was the only time this four year old competed on a fast rated track when wearing blinkers.......and the race was at today's one mile distance albeit in a one turn mile at Aqu"........and his latest supported the idea he is a solid runner racing with blinkers on fast tracks as he set a strong pace and still went gate to wire to graduate........hard not to like once again

3  Blame It On Kitty   last sure appears to be a dirty up his form spin around the grass course to drop and go go go 2nd out following a 2 month break.......only race run ever on conventional dirt is one of his lifetime best efforts

4  R B Eye   not much fig wise but he is a fairly smooth runner who might be able to get a nice mid pack ground saving trip.......and that is a dangerous thing in these cheap conditioned claiming races

7  Brazilian Summer

race 6    average clarity

3  Mosienko  three year old filly showed a liking to the grass in her last two races but it appears that the two turns did her in........that and her sprint races on the main track at Belmont are good races in the slop.......her graduation day came at Bel in her 2nd lifetime start which was run off of 27 days rest (a 13 length win at that).......so 2nd out after a layoff racing off of 19 days rest should be a dangerous proposition for the male opposition

4  Jaxon's Goldie   interesting placement for this O'Neill 1st time starter because if runs well in this starter race next time he get run for the same condition and not have to be up for a tag.......works are decent as is his pedigree for the sod

5  Shootin Money   1st on the sod but he owns a decent pedigree for it..........and he might be feeling really good as he was able to get loose on the lead setting a ridiculously slow pace........the effort likely was stress-free.......call it the perfect work-out

race 7    average clarity

7  El Diablo Rojo   rather sure this colt's MSW debut was nothing more than a muscle him up turf tightener.......that notion is supported by the fact this youngster went off at 20 to 1.........then 10 days following his debut he put in an endurance building 6F drill.......then 10 days following that he worked a near bullet vastly improved 5F work.........seems very pointed for today and for a trainer who is dynamite with 2nd time starters

3  Tallemark   hard not imaging this Bruce Headley 1st timer not making a good account of himself following a steady diet of 5 and 6 furlong drills.......and of couple of copious works are impressive......and look who shows up for his only mount of the day........Mr Smith

8  Lightning Fast   both lifetime sprint races one of which was at SA are better than par Santucci figs which are somewhat disguised by 4 and 5 1/2 lengths of trip adjustment.........trainer Bill Spawr has shown that he can get a given horse to run well off of 46 to 90 days.......67 days since this gelding was last seen

4  Stir the Pot

2  Rawhide Rawlins  SCRATCHED OUT FROM THE RACE
