Santa Anita for Friday 31 January 2020

Decent card this afternoon and the same seems to be the case for Saturday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Jetovator   not sure what the catalyst was but this Eurton gelding sure jumped forward in latest earning a number that is better than par for today's level when you adjust for trip........and today we get a significant rider upgrade......toss in a good post and presto - a top pick-a-rue

7  Trending Higher   Gaines is only 1 for her last 36 with horses debuting on the turf......but this four year old is training quite well and mom has tossed 8 winners from 8 starters and 4 of them won on the grass.........that and when Carla legs up Van Dyke her runners are usually quite "live"

6  Fellow Citizen   lone race was run way back in July of 2018 where this now four year old ran 2nd in a MC50K 5 1/2 furlong race at Lrc........returns as a 1st time gelding..........a.m. preparation for his comeback race is solid........Miller must like what sees to put him in a MSW race as he is seldom afraid to lose a horse......pedigree to handle the turf and a route is decent for a Cal-bred

4  Watch the Dip

race 2    below average clarity

5  No Wine Untested   need the lead to win type has a shot at getting the front end as he seems the quickest and has an apprentice rider in Diaz that is decent at stealing a given race on the front end

2  Busy Paytner   seems like the 2nd most likely to lead this race and like our top selection he has been tough to overcome when he gets it.......would have been top choice if Prat and Hess were a better combo but it has been many a moon since they last won as a combo

4  Rizzi's Honors   seemingly sets some for a stalker with ability like this mare has........but.......her record at SA has been poor as compared to racing on other main track surfaces (1 for 14 as compared to 4 for 11) or she would have been top pick-a-rue

race 3    average clarity

2  Velvet Queen   vastly improved since since Baltas saw fit to put the blinkers on this filly 3 races back......4 speed types in this field but this four year old appears to have the most and a good post for her jock to work with........and that jock Joel Rosario is an upgrade especially with the mega slump that Bejarano is in

4  Meso   short on numbers but the only true late runner in this field of only five........so you know the drill - if the pace on paper becomes reality this filly should be "mopping up" in the late stretch

1  Miss Stormy D   filly has hit a new higher level of talent since switching to the dirt.......her two dirt sprints fit fine here if she can run similar in her first ever route race........like her chances more if her rider takes back some at the start in order to avoid what shapes up to be a hot pace

race 4    average clarity

7  Scarlet Heat   plenty of early speed signed up should play into the capable hands of Flavien Prat who has handled this late running filly well in her last two races.......both were at today's one mile turf distance and with larger fields to circumvent

1  Quinnie  another who runs from off of the pace and has a good shot to have her late kick flattered by what should be a stout set of fractions

3  Sunrise Royale   sprint-sprint-route scenario and 3rd out after the layoff should have this mare well prepared for her 1st ever route race.......significant rider upgrade........and Krujac has given Rispoli nothing but "live" runners

4  Avalon Ride

race 5    average clarity

3  Freiburg   call his 1st in S Cal since arriving from Emd a muscle him up tune-up as his turf pedigree is poor.........works since the race are good........last three races run at Emd before leaving town look as if they should fit fine here.........we shall see about 3 PM pacific

6  Italiano   five year old sure fits at today's level very well but he tends to get flat late when competing at 6 1/2 furlong......but then again Prat sticks around and as stated above he fits today's Alw 25000s level too well ignore

1  Dark Hedges   one hole you say.....2 for 2 sprinting breaking out of the one hole and one of the races was at seven furlongs......faces quite the step up in class but if he manages to get loose he still dangerous

7  Oil Can Knight

race 6    average clarity

3  She's So Special   both lifetime turf sprints are solid efforts.......lone route race was on the dirt and the race turned out to be a very key one as the final time hinted that it would be.......so this filly should handle a turf route well especially with Prat & Miller at the controls

1  Little Bird   top race overseas was run the only time this filly ran on firm turf........ironically she caught a good rated turf course in her first in the USA which was in sunny southern California.........should be firm today.......gets a rider upgrade.........gets a better post.........those three things should make for a much improved effort today

6  Establish Justice   vastly improved effort in her latest both in final time and in pace.......in fact if she produces similar fractions today she has a chance to sit no worse than 2 wide on turn one on or near the lead.......not out of the win picture by any means

race 7    average clarity

3  Handsome Michael   decent chance for the 10 lbs. apprentice rider David Mussad to grab his 1st lifetime win as it sure looks as if he can open up a loose lead........and if he does his assigned weight of 112 lbs should help his mount hold together

7  Royal Suspect   extremely disguised turf route run on New Years Day as this Glatt three year old broke slightly tardy - was rank a couple of lengths - and then ran wide most of the way........pegged it at about 9L of trip trouble.......Santucci fig worked out to be much better than par for today's lower level........can he run as well on the dirt.....pedigree says he should

4  Itsthattime   on the right end of the learning curve with few reasons not to believe his progress can't continue today.......fits just fine if it does

5  Blues Rapper

9  Promise Nothing
