Santa Anita for Friday 14 February 2020

Decent card today to start 4 straight days of racing. Saturday's card looks even better.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Zippninthecity   like this youngster's chances to be tough on or near the front end if she can handle the dirt in her 2nd lifetime start..........in her one mile turf debut after breaking tardy she still set the quickest quarter and half of the 3 races run on the grass on 12 Jan at one mile (and the other two races were at higher levels).......race is void of solid speed......pedigree for the dirt is adequate

4  Golden Melody   if our top choice fails to handle the dirt this girl should find herself on or just off of the lead.......that and she might be up to her best to date as she just worked an improved 5F (maybe her most impressive work ever) one week ago.......good rider/trainer combo

6  It's a Riddle   consistent sort would have been rated higher if this race was run less than 6 1/2 furlongs as it sure appears that 6 1/2F is a little further than she may want to run

2  Via Alpina

race 2    average clarity

6  Concord Jet   best speed in the race and draws a decent post.......gelding was able to put in two works since his last race which was run on 19 Jan the latest of which was rather decent.........ride/trainer are 2 for their last 6 as a team and with the other 4 hitting the board.......sure appears to be dangerous speed

5  Polity   best at SA and so far this six year old has only fired good efforts fresh off of the bench.........he is "fresh" today and his work regiment suggests the trainer knows he needs to be fully fit and ready as it is more than likely it will be one race and done for quite some time

3  Rineshaft   both races run on the dirt at SA with the blinkers on were decent efforts and if repeated seem capable of getting to the circle of joy this afternoon

race 3    average clarity

3  Lady Amber  one of Peter Eurton's more reliable and dangerous moves is "1st time in maiden claiming" which is the case today for this four year old filly making her 4th lifetime start........by my book her lifetime best was the only time she has run on the dirt.......that race was at 5 1/2F and 6F appears to be a better fit......we shall see at about 2 p.m. pacific

1  Love Not War   goofy rank strides run in her latest hides a race that works out to be about par for today's lower MC level when you adjust for it.........and like our top selection she takes the somewhat magical drop from MSW racing to MC.........nice move forward in 2nd lifetime start........so 2nd out after a two month break might be a good thing

2  Your Royal Coil   trainer has a 16% win percentage but over the years he has a higher percent than than with individuals coming off of prolonged layoffs..........this filly has been away since early Jan of 2019 but she is training as if she might be returning as a more formidable contender.......we shall see about 2 PM pacific if that is the case

race 4    average clarity

7  California Kook   brutal trip in this youngster's latest race which was a Cal bred $200K Stakes race at one mile on the sod or she could have come home a 43 to 1 winner......that race was the only time she raced on Lasix without blinkers........no changes for today and she is only in a Cal bred nw alw.......her adjusted for trouble Santucci fig is much better than par for today's softer level

4  She's Devoted   pounded at the windows in her MSW debut which was run at 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass........like our top choice she overcame a poor trip to win........shuffled on the run-up and ran wide........6L of trip trouble - not easy to overcome in only a 5 1/2 turf race......pedigree to get the one mile of turf is decent especially for a Cal-bred

1  Warrior's Moon   back to Prat after being absent for a couple of races.........beat our top choice in her latest but barely and with a much better journey.........so she likely will need more today and/or more trouble for the "Kook" to turn the tables......stranger things have happened

8  Sassyserb

5  Almost a Factor

race 5    above average clarity

7  Miss Megan   best speed in the race and owns the potential to crush the field if she can handle the SA dirt as well as she did the Dmr dirt on 2 September........and her only other race on conventional dirt is better than it appears as she dueled on a dull inside on 8 August at Dmr.......she did well to only get beat by 1 3/4L for the win

1  Luck Ms Jones   double barrel action action from the D'Amato barn as he also conditions our top choice........five year old mare is racing on the dirt for the first time following 7 career races on the sod...........her a.m. hints the trainer is attempting to put much more speed into her ........latest work is eye popping (best of 122 at 4F on 8 Feb) and hints she has plenty of speed now to handle the conversion

4  Time for Ebby   Steve Knapp is having a strong SA meeting to date.......his seven year old mare seems best at SA on the dirt and might get a nice stalk position behind our top selection........dangerous sort especially if our top choice fails to preform as well as anticipated

5  Libby

race 6    average clarity

1  Hootie   two of his last three turf races fit solidly here and he retains the meets leading rider on the turf percentage wise (24%) in Umberto Rispoli.......also his only race at 9F on the sod was with a very low % grass rider and was predictably a bad trip or he might have been in the mix for the win

3  Roaring Fork   gelding might be able to get a dream trip behind the 6 horse (or grab the lead) who is facing way too tough today and should cash it in early.........fractions might be awfully easy and if that is so it should enhance this one's chances of a visit to the circle of joy

9  Lifeline   most proven in the field racing at 9F on firm turf .......as in 2 wins and 1 3rd in 4 starts .......gets a rider upgrade and to a jock in Prat who was up for the 9F wins on the turf.......such a deal

8  Erotic

5  Mr. Magico

race 7    average clarity

3  First Star   2 for 2 when not competing in a Stakes race........away since 28 December but Ron Ellis has put 5 drills into his filly since........only two turn race is his lifetime best and disguised by a very wide trip.......regular rider Van Dyke stays put........hard not to like

2  Der Lu   Van Dyke jumps ship and goes to our top choice so Baffert gives Cedillo a shot to impress........capable rider might attempt to snatch the lead and never look back which has happened quite often in the dirt routes in 2020 at SA

4  Kaydetre   nice layoff race in her latest in a Grade 3 where she was only beaten 2 1/4L for the win......but she was beaten by our 2nd choice and she had a better trip.......Blanc has fit this David Randall (only horse in his barn) mare well.......likely needs best ever and maybe she provides it 2nd out after the layoff

race 8    average clarity

9  Hot Magistrate   filly has shown that she has different gears of speed and Van Dyke (jock upgrade) will use one of the higher levels of speed that she owns in this spot to clear all or most by the back-stretch and try and wire the field

8  Oh Pretty Woman   seems best taking back and then making a strong run coming out of turn two.......connections will likely have their fingers crossed that she gets a decent pace up front to flatter her late kick

6  Dance Costume   nice turf sprint debut and her pedigree to handle a one mile grass race is good.......not out of the win picture by any means........pun intended

7  Y Not Sizzle   very consistent efforts at the one mile turf distance but she lacks the will (or the understanding) to win.......as in a "hanger"

3  Durga
