Santa Anita for Friday 20 March 2020

Purchase for our special publication for Florida Derby day at Gulfstream Park (7 Stakes races only) on March 28th is now available. As in the past the selections will be sent in your email Friday afternoon at approximately 5 p.m. central.

Not crazy about the card as the track surface is difficult to predict today. Saturday's card looks very good handicapping wise. Hope Santa Anita stays open as they might get quite the handle with most tracks closed and many folks looking for something to do. If it does close we will cover Golden Gate. If it closes Oaklawn is next in line and following that Gulfstream Park. Stay safe.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf: 5-2-6-1-3-11A-6)

2  Charging Home   only lifetime race was way back in September on the dirt at Lrc.......flashed some solid speed thru the 1/2 and then cashed it regiment is good as is her grass pedigree.........especially like her latest drill which was put in only 4 days ago and was a bullet (best of 18 5F work at Slr)........feeling great when it counts the most

5  Trouville

6  Prance

1  Tiger's Princess

3  Down Home

race 2    average clarity

4  Buyback   trainer is having a strong meeting and might add to his 25% win total here with this consistent filly........Bonde is 9 for his last 27 with the sprint-route-sprint maneuver which is the case this afternoon

5  Your Royal Coil   on the improve with each and every start and I like the the connections don't get too ambitious with their filly and places her where her chances of winning are realistic

1  Boolicious   laid up since May but fits just fine if she is ready fresh off of the bench.......the fact that she is up for a tag suggests this is not a tune-up as she likely would have been put in a protected race........if there is some moisture in the track that should be a plus for her

race 3    average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf: 3-2-7-9-5-4)

3  J Z My Man   Baffert 1ster finished up his a.m. preparation with a best of 214 bullet 4F work only 4 days ago........colt is brilliantly bred to take to the turf.......plenty of speed in his works so look for him to go after the lead and be one tough cookie thru-out

2  Ka'nah

7  Whirl Candy

5  Duplicity

4  Champers

race 4    average clarity

3  Raneem   all three lifetime races for this Baffert filly on the Santa Anita dirt fit solidly in this spot........if she has remained the same she should be tough but I am a bit concerned that she doesn't have one listed work since her latest run 3 weeks ago

5  Bochim  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  dangerous looking prolonged work regiment for this Victor Garcia 1st time starter........and she shows some signs that she owns some early speed.......that would come in handy in this abbreviated sprint race of only 5 1/2 furlongs

1  Enriched by Deb  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACEnot much play on the board for this Baltas MC50K yet he put in a decent effort.......should fit today if he builds on the race which might have been a "needed" run

6  Enchanting Moon

2  Lucky Daughter

race 5    average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf: 7-5-6-3-2-4)

7  Y Not Sizzle   yet to grab the lead at any call of her 11 career starts classifies her as a "hanger"........but might not hang today down the stretch as many will be tiring when push comes to shove especially considering she is a four year old facing mostly three year old runners........big difference for a three year old in March to face older at 9F than say 8F........good to see Rispoli stay up for a 3rd straight time

6  Warren's Empress

2  Kissable U

3  Rose's Crystal

5  Slew South

race 6    way below average clarity

4  Fair Lucky   like the cut back in distance as this filly flattens out late past today's 6F distance.......four year old is by far at her best on conventional dirt (6 1 1 3 1)........might get the garden spot behind the 1 and the 5 who might press each other

5  Spectacular   Jerry Wallace just claimed this improving mare who has something to prove racing as far as 6F.........but........if she handles the distance she looks good in this spot if she can grab the lead as the other speed (the 1 horse) gives in when she doesn't get it.......trainer is 1 for 1 at the meeting

3  Todos Santos   consistent closer is trying to return off of only 6 days rest.......not sure if she can handle the ridiculously short turn around (should be a rule against it for horse safety sake)........fits well if she can

race 7    average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf: 2-4-7-3-5)

8  Liar Liar   believe latest was nothing more than a tune-up........if so this Baltas colt should be very tough here especially on a grass course that should have some give to it.......jock upgrade to boot

2  West Sider

9  K P All Systems

3  Commander

6  Last Opportunity

race 8    average clarity

9  War Watch  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  this MC50K for Cal-breds has four that have started and outside of our 2nd selection none of them seem very formidable........this 1st timer is working solidly albeit at Lrc especially his latest drill........trainer starts very few 1st timers but he is quite dangerous when he does.......should go off a decent price

5  Equipo A   three year old gelding blew a loose lead in his improved 2nd start but it made sense that he did as he set a fast quarter and did so too close to a dull inside.......if he gets a track that is conducive to speed he might get loose and wire

4  War Maker   hard not to use Dean Pederson these days as he is red hot.........his first timer is training well enough to be ready........and.......over the years Pederson has done decently with MC 1st timers even when he wasn't doing that well overall

6  Very Irish

7  My Super Mario
