Del Mar for Saturday 11 July 2020

Best of luck as always!

race 1   below  average clarity

2  Hydrogen   trainer Jeff Bonde is not afraid to drop a given horse multiple levels to snatch a win.....that is the case here....turf to dirt today has the potential of being a can the switch to his favorite surface to date which is the Dmr dirt

4  Octopus   claimed last November in a MC32K race and has been away since.....but works are quite solid and he ran an improved effort to graduate in the Nov. race.......colt should be in the mix from the get go and with a rider in Edwin Maldonado who is most comfortable near the front end of things

5  Foreign Protocal   N Cal invader is at his best at today's 5 1/2 furlong distance and his latest race at Pln was awfully good and fits OK at today's higher level.......trainer is 29% win with repeat claimers with his last 69

race 2    average clarity

5  Shootin Money   significant vault forward in this colt's latest race which was a 5 1/2F turf sprint over at SA at today's same level of racing........trainer has done well with limited starters in 2020 and is decent getting a given horse to put forth good efforts.......1st on the Del Mar turf is a small ? mark

1  Commander  positive rider change especially for a grass race.......for most Del Mar meetings the 1 post has done well in theses abbreviated 5F turf races.........ignore this gelding's poor layoff run at Lrc as his pedigree for conventional dirt is dismal.........trainer Peter Miller is dynamite in sprint turf races and very dangerous when he takes the blinkers off a given horse which is the case today

3  Sharp Warning   three year old colt dueled in a brutal 1/4 and predictably tired late in his latest run at GG which like today was a 5F turf affair........3 works since the 20 June race.........major league rider upgrade for a turf race.........speedster won't quit easily with J J Hernandez up if he has held form and the works hint he has remained sharp

8  Handsome Cat

4  D K's Crown

race 3    average clarity

2  Da Kine   somewhat suspicious drop but nobody grabbed him for 40K in his last so maybe the barn just wants a win and don't mind losing this four year colt......lone race ever run at Del Mar would crush today's group......and his last run at MC40K level is much better than in appears in print

5  Trojan Music   trainer is not afraid to drop multiple levels to win (and that includes with a recent claim) as he has won 5 of his last 15 with multiple level drops and with 5 others in the money.......that and I like that Fuentes stays put......danger city here

4  Convex   another plunging in class which makes him dangerous.......but........he runs as a 1st time gelding today which makes me think the operation didn't do much to change him.......thus 3rd selection

6  Pour On the Cole

race 4    average clarity

1  Sapori Girl   on the improve with each and every race and Rispoli who won 3 yesterday seems to be a good fit......last two adjusted Santucci figs are 2 1/2L & 5 1/2L better than par and today this filly gets to carry 5 lbs less in for 40K........and the filly gets a decent post for a change.......hard not to like

2  Star of Africa   solid move forward in her latest and the effort is better than it appears in print.......and like our top selection his connections are willing to enter her for $40K to get an additional 4 lbs off........decent N Cal rider in Ricardo Gonzalez gets the nod

3  Lemon Drop Tini   filly is a little short fig wise but she is a fairly smooth runner with a good post for Van Dyke to work with which can make up for her lack of ability

7  Rowangoeshollywood

5  Surface

race 5    average clarity

5  Tripple Shake   very nice a.m. preparation that stands out here and for a trainer in Luis Mendez who often has them ready to roll in these early baby don't usual work a two year old maiden 1st time starter more than 10 times and then give him a race.......Gryder up and that is a good thing as over the last 2 months he has been given "live" mounts from the trainer

4  Raisebeforetheflop   it appears to be "all systems go" for this Peter Miller MSW 1st time starter who is the only runner in the field to work 5F more than once.......and that can give him an endurance advantage when push comes to shove in the late stretch

2  Hot Rod Charlie   mom has tossed 4 winners from 4 starters and one of them was a Stakes winner.......would have considered higher if it wasn't for the O'Neill/Cedillo combo's dismal record over the last 2 months of 1 for 21

race 6    average clarity

4  Duplicity   very game grass races in both lifetime starts which were run 1/2 furlong longer than today's 5F.......and it sure seems significant that he handled two different grass courses (SA & CD).........should be in the mix from the get go and tough thru-out

6  Speedy Justice   here is the comment prior to this colt's MSW debut at Del Mar on 14 Nov 19 as our top pick, "steady improvement in the morning for this Baffert 1st time starter.........last preparatory drill is quite impressive and at today's don't see too many Baffert 1sters go for only $45K at must be rather high on this colt to take the horse and not debut him in a maiden claimer"........he won fun and the effort fits just fine at today's higher level

10  Party Town   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  dueled in unreal fractions in a Stakes race in his latest and only lost by 1 1/4 at the wire.......cut back of 1/2 furlong sure appears to be a the jock last time he should go off a big price

11  Torosay

5  Mystic Flight

race 7    average clarity

3  Lucky Patrick   very hidden move forward for this seven year old gelding in his latest effort........very wide and close to a hot trainer is Ryan Hanson and he got this fellow to work one big improved bullet gate drill on the 4th of July..........very solid back numbers in 2019.........seems ready for one in 2020

4  Lil Sydney  Glatt has done little wrong the last 3 months (won yesterday too) so might guess is that this gelding will rebound to his race two back......fits just fine if he does......go to guy for Mark in Cedillo sticks around supporting the notion of a bounce back

7  Mantaray Island   not sure if this laid up gelding is meant and ready but if he is he will have to be reckoned with the significant drop down in class

1  Rogallo

8  All I Can Say

race 8    below average clarity

3  Jasikan   (4 3 0 1) in one mile lifetime race (and by a lot) was run off of a 6 month rest.........colt been away for 11 months.......Rispoli gets the call which is usually a very good thing in a grass race and especially so when he is on a horse who started their career overseas like this colt who hails from Ireland

1  Kiwi's Dream   GG invader seems very sharp.........(5 2 3 0) when on the lead in his last 5 racing endeavors but he does not need the lead to win.......good history with top N Cal jock up.......good post.......hard not to like

4  Voodoo Song   lead type only can really fly and seems like the speed of the it might come down to who wants to pressure him early (likely candidates are 1 - 5 - 6).........we shall see about 5:30 p.m. pacific

5  Bob and Jackie

9  Big Score

race 9    average clarity

3  Diva in Charge   what an improvement with the switch to route racing.......both lifetime route endeavors peg this four year old filly as the one to overcome.......1st on the Del Mar main track but she has handled both the Lrc & the SA surfaces impressively so her chances of disliking the Dmr surface seem slim

6  Rather Nosy   latest which was run off of 2 1/2 months off is much better than par.........filly appreciates ample time between starts and 6 weeks might be enough time off to run solid back to back races..........yet to run a mile but her 6 1/2F & 7F races are solid hinting she will get another furlong and the two turns

2  White Velvet   turf to dirt.......rider upgrade.......filly won her 2nd lifetime out following a long layoff should make her dangerous.....and at a handsome price

5  Buyback

4  Kristi's Tiger

race 10    below average clarity

5  Nurse Goodbody   very strong stretch runs in both lifetime starts the last of which was run at today's one mile distance.......earned a par like number in the race and unless you are a touring golf pro par is a good last time Umberto Rispoli should get a nice mid pack ground saving trip.......decent shot to graduate today in her 3rd lifetime start

2  Fabiolla   sprint-sprint-route scenario and for a filly with a strong route pedigree.........filly is on the desired end of the learning curve and with few reasons not to think she can't continue her progress this afternoon even with a rider downgrade

12  Sweet Devil   lifetime best and by quite a bit was run in her only turf route.........she earned a strong adjusted for trouble Santucci fig that was a couple of lengths better than par when you adjust for an uncharacteristically sloppy ride by Prat........though post or would have picked higher

6  Resarcio

1  Vegas Palm

7  This Tea
