Del Mar for Sunday 1 November 2020

Take note that this year's special publication for the Breeders Cup at Keeneland covers both days but with only a comment for the top choice. (also take note that the 6 special pubs. are finished and you will need to purchase the Breeders Cup publications).

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

3  Spielberg   best route speed in the race and if he doesn't get it he is capable of running well without it.........both races at Del Mar are exceptionally strong for the MSW the cut back of 1/16th today and of course the cut back from two straight Grade 1 races to a MSW race

2  The Great One   nice muscle him up turf sprint debut which was in a small Stakes........3 nice endurance building works since.........all systems go and they better be because this is one loaded MSW race

1  Parnelli   strong forward move in his 2nd lifetime start and 1st at a route.......and his trainer John Shirreffs is awfully dangerous the 2nd time he sends a given horse "long"

race 2    average clarity

5  Keystone Field   only the 5th career race for this R Mandella five year old but he has improved with each and every race........only grass race run was just fine and he gets to run his 2nd grass race 3rd out after a long layoff and with the powerful sprint-sprint-route maneuver ........Mike Smith wisely stays put

4  On Easy Street   colt has been off since late Feb but that might be a good thing as he has run well both times in his career when he has been "fresh".........and his a.m. work supports the notion that today's one mile grass race is not a tune-up

3  War Path   one of Baffert's more dangerous moves is with "blinkers off" which is the case here and as good as Baffert is overall that is saying something.........what I believe the most successful trainer on the planet sees is that this colt has only finished well when he runs from a mid pack position

1  Johan Zoffani

race 3    below average clarity

6  Big Hoof Dynamite   lone win since Truman took over the training duties of this three year old 8 races back came when he dropped this gelding into a 25K nw2 affair........similar drop today into this 20K nw3.......that and this fellow sure appreciates one mile conventional dirt races as in (7 2 2 3)

1  Bitter Ring Home   good time to change riders to Maldonado as this race has very little speed signed up and this gelding has some which means it will be pedal to the metal from the opening bell.........and if Edwin doesn't get it this five year old is still capable of winning without it.......such a deal

7  Cause and Effect   if the 1 horse doesn't grab the lead I believe this gelding will get it.......lifetime best race was his only effort at Dmr where he ran a par like fig for today's level and the race also has turned out to be a key race..........1st at a route but his pedigree to handle one is decent.........should be a big price

2  Race Home

race 4    average clarity

1  Gallovie   overdue drop for this filly who has been screaming out for softer and finally gets it 4F bullet work and back to J J Hernandez support the idea Richard Baltas means business........race lacks speed and this filly has some and a good post to utilize it

5  Freedom Lass   as mentioned above the race shape for this affair seems to favor those up close early and the most likely horse in this field of 7 to get it is this Mike Puype filly........and........the two times she has led in her career she won and was 2nd..........dangerous proposition for the opposition if she gets it

3  Viazar   better focus in her stretch runs since the blinkers were added two races back........four year old filly overcame a slightly tardy start and a wide trip to graduate in her latest......and......the race has turned out to be a key one with multiple next out winners

4  Secret Square

race 5    average clarity

7  Chollima   logical drop back to the MC20K level where she debuted 3 races back.......that race and her last race at the MC40K level are both strong better than par efforts for today's given level.......and today we get one monster rider upgrade from a jock who has been in a horrendous funk to one that is not

2  It's a Riddle  (5 0 3 1) racing on the Del Mar main track......retains Hernandez in the saddle.....many of her efforts/figs are solid but she sure has a tendency to hang

3  Palm d'Oro   filly has been away since 20 June but she is OK off of layoffs........preparatory works are up to snuff for her return to the race wars........not much early speed in the race and she owns some

6  Our Romance

4  Rickie Nine Toe's

race 6    average clarity

3  Ivy League   very solid time/number/2nd for a July two year old having to tackle a one mile grass race in her MSW debut...........then in her 2nd start she had a brutal trip yet still managed to run 3rd in a small Stakes race (broke a little tardy and ran very wide for a total of 8L of trip trouble)........back to the MSW ranks........Rispoli wisely sticks around

2  Leia Marie   O'Neill's east coast invader showed enough life in her MSW sprint turf debut to be considered here despite making her mark in two dirt races to follow........three nice works since her 3rd place finish at Belmont in a one turn mile.......dangerous sort

7  Pizzazz   after a nice 5 1/2F MSW turf debut R Mandella (who also trains our top choice) put his promising filly in a 100K Stakes race and she showed improvement running 3rd and earned a significantly better fig..........2 very reassuring works since the 4 Oct race.......switches jocks back to Smith and she is back in the MSW ranks

8  Avisse

5  Constantina

race 7    average clarity

2  Policy   his best racing surface appears to be Del Mar's and his favorite racing distance looks as if it is today's 6 1/2 furlong sprint distance..........trainer Mark Glatt is very dangerous with sprinter's coming off of long layoffs.......and this gelding was 2nd in his MSW debut so you know Glatt can see that he is capable fresh.........good rider/trainer combo over the last 3 months in Cedillo/Glatt

3  Tizhotndusty   three year old gelding has had 4 lifetime dirt races which were all sprints.......good trips in two of them led to two wins......not the best of trips in the other did not.......won his last race earning a lifetime best fig.......if he holds form and Van Dyke gies him another decent ride he has a shot at making it back to back wins

8  Fratelli   lead type only so far and he has only one other speedster to put away in the 9 horse.......he seems faster than the 9 but Edwin Maldonado is riding the 9 and be all out to get the front as the veteran rider is oh so good exiting the gate

7  I Will Not

4  Big Barrel

race 8    average clarity

3  Strongconstitution   after 4 solid lifetime sprint races to start his career (two of which were on the lawn) this colt then popped even better in two dirt routes and both races are disguised in their strength........nice a.m. preparation since his last.......good post and a decent grass rider in Cedillo.......hard not to like

2  Lane Way   very improved in his latest earning a number that is better than par for today's tougher level of racing.......regular rider Pratt is not riding today so Van Dyke picks up a nice mount and gets a good post to break from

5  Heywoods Beach   not much fig wise but he is 2 for 3 on the grass racing at one mile and 0 for 5 at other turf distances and both wins were with today's rider Umberto Rispoli up.........dangerous sort with a clean trip

8  I'm Leaving

1  Goalie

race 9    below average clarity

12  Minoso   dropped in his latest and ran alright despite being a 7 1/2L beaten 5th as he ran wide in a fast heat of 25K nw2 runners........drops again and shortens up 1/2 furlong which appears to be a positive as he usually makes a decent turn move at 6F and then gets a little flat late.........5 works since his last on 25 September and J J Hernandez stays put........hard not to like despite the prospect of getting a wide trip from the far outside post

9  You'reright Again   no play on the board whatsoever in his latest which was run off of an eight month layoff.......that hints at a gimme of sorts.......if that is the case lookout as this three year old is (3 1 2 0) at Del Mar and (4 0 3 1) "at the distance".......and maybe more importantly he owns some early speed in a race that lacks it......should be a big number

3  Bedrock   definitely appears to like the Del Mar surface the most and might be doing rather well as he just raced on 9 Oct and was still able to put a decent 4F work since........another runner likely to go off at high odds

10  King Parker

5  Next Flight

1  Tromador
