Santa Anita for Saturday 7 April 2012

[private]

Mike Smith who likes the limelight and handles it well will be all out to hit the 5,000 win milestone today and has enough good mounts to get the job done. Hitting the 5000 victory mark on Santa Anita Derby will put a big smile on Mr Smith's face.

Decent day. Not one race rated any lower than Average clarity

race 1    slightly above average clarity

3  Liberal Arts   both lifetime route races are quite solid in this spot........back to running two turns after a useful sprint in last....trainer has had a great SA meet

2  He's Very Rare   looks loose here with the meets top jock in the irons......very dangerous if Rosario is able to set a reasonable pace

4  Valley Cat   might be at his best on conventional dirt yet this is only his 4th race on it.....checked early about 3L and blocked on the turn about 1L and still ran a closing close 2nd in latest...... good history for this gelding when Bejarano rides

race 2    average clarity

3  Solar Rocket    whole career beats these unless of course his obvious fragile health takes a turn for the worse during the race

6  Classical Slew   works sure hint that this laid up drop down is very ready to compete off of 2 1/2 month layoff.....and why not drop because this Mulhall runner has only competed in 6 races over a 2 year period....not the kind I would want to claim

1  Coo Cachoo   long overdo drop for this gelding that has only hit the board once in 7 starts since Heap claimed last July for 25K.....also..... has mostly been running long when his record indicates he runs well in sprints   (3 1 1 0 1) at today's distance

8  Dave's Pacemaker    ultra consistent sort gives Heap 2 bullets in this race.......2 for 2 at today's distance

race 3    above average clarity

6  Mint Humor   capable of very solid pace down the SA hill turf course....looks to me like Bejarano should be the controlling speed in this spot

2  Relentless Heat   both races sprinting in 2012 (one of them down the hill) are efforts more than capable of taking this race if this Eurton runner receives enough pace up front

1  Helmark   sharp drills for this laid up runner and seemingly bred well enough to handle the grass in his 1st race on it.......still it is kind of difficult to see him winning this unless he is a strong "move up" on the sod

5  Stone Hot   two consecutive lackluster efforts for this Jones runner......needs a significant rebound.....and.....some unseen pace to flatter his late running style

race 4    average clarity

3   Treacherous   ran a significant race/fig in 2nd lifetime start last Nov......so that makes me like his chances 2nd after a layoff today......exits a fast heat in last where running 2nd 5L behind the winner was nothing to be embarrassed about.....big recent work...all systems go for Mandella

7  Regulus   Harty is not much with MSW 1st timers but this colt sure is training like this runner is an exception to what the historical data suggests about a Harty MSW 1ster

2  French Storm   well bred Harrington 1st timer has plenty of foundation put into him in his a.m. work.......seems ready....might not have early speed but should be finishing well off of those multiple long drills

4  My Best Brother   big drills for this laid up Canani charge who was bet down to 7-2 in his debut last August

NOTE:   always dangerous to leave out a Baffert 1st timer (no. 8)...... so those who want to go a little deeper in your exotic wagers you had best toss him in

race 5    average clarity

5  Qatar's Pearl    much needed 8 weeks off to get this gelding back to where he was when he 1st ran on Nov 25th in the USA........if he is back in top form and gets the trip he will be a handful for his competition here....Rosario riding sure is a good sign he is ready to roll

4  Currahee   decent 1st ever on the grass in a sprint down the hill......trainer is solid 2nd time running on the grass with a horse and we get a very solid jockey upgrade....good pedigree to handle the new distance

2  Langfurs Lightning   useful 1st ever on the lawn and a sharp 5/8th's drill just 6 days ago....good shot to move forward and contend for the win

6  Montego Bay   horrid trip in last having about 8L in trip trouble and only losing by 5L.....sharp work regiment since.......switch to Talamo who has had a very good week of race riding

race 6    average clarity

4  I'll Have Another   solid Grade 2 win in last and O'Neill seemingly has pointed this colt to this race since.......great work series should have more than ready fresh......owns tactical speed in a race that doesn't have an over abundance of front running types

1  Creative Cause   would have been my top choice in the race if wasn't for the blinkers being removed for today....not crazy about horse's I love changing equipment.......my guess is the connections want this Ky Derby top contender to sit back further off the pace not so much for this race but the Ky Derby....... they seem willing to possible lose this race in hopes of getting the most out of this horse in the Derby......still.......a top contender here

2  Liaison   quality Baffert colt goes back to Bejarano who owns all of this colt's 3 lifetime wins.......fell off in last but the recent drills suggest a rebound today when it counts the most....in the SA Derby

3  Holy Candy   major step up in competition and that might do him in but 2 of his lifetime MSW races fit effort/fig wise......dangerous despite just graduating from the MSW ranks

Long-shot Possibilities:  10 Brother Francis    nice turf tightener and very good works since.......Grade 1 run last December fits fairly well......and maybe most importantly Cassidy sure seems to be  awakening from the doldrums....decent bomber

race 7    average clarity

3  Thunder Canyon   just keeps getting better and....... better and...........the recent works hint at even better today

5  Ain   talk about a tune-up in last...... 55 to 1 for a Gaines runner.....full throttle today 2nd out after the layoff.....late runner should get ample heat up front to aid his closing style

7  Fiddlers Afleet   best stay off of what looks like a hot pace up front.....if he does he might get a nice stalking to mid pace position which can possibly put him in the drivers seat come stretch time

1  Oilisblackgold   another closer that gets a field loaded with speed.....should be motoring late.....blinkers back on seems like a plus......does tend to hang some

race 8    average clarity

1  Lady Of Shamrock   Sadler charge owns 2 consecutive grass races that are a couple of lengths better than par for today's level...........and she is very well bred to get the extra distance....is Smith going for win 5,000 here?

3  Killer Graces   about 1/2 her races on the main track track fit if she can transfer those efforts over to the grass course on her 1st endeavor on the grass.....pedigree is fairly good to handle the sod

7  Indigo River   seemingly has the best speed here so Talamo most likely will be on the engine early in hopes of getting loose and lonely on the front end

4  Byrama   filly is on the improve and Simon Callaghan has turned into one of the more dangerous turf trainers on the grounds in Graded turf races

race 9    slightly above average clarity

2  Amazombie   Is Smith going for 5,000 here?.....wide trip close to a solid pace did this BC sprint winner in in his return to the action.......super history on conventional dirt....always seems to give 100%

1  Sway Away   another who has done little wrong in 5 lifetime sprints.......and sure seems to appreciate the SA main track

5  Roman Threat   ran one of the more impressive MSW debut races I have ever seen.......fanned out wide close to a hot pace and still ran 1:08 flat. Could have easily broken 1:07 with a good trip. .....a ton if he gets the trip and of course has recovered from such a stressful effort

6  Camp Victory   seems to fire every time in sprints on the main track and often out runs his odds....laid up since Nov. but the works suggest he is all set to roll

race 10    average clarity

6  Sweetly Peppered   improving sort retains Bejarano......a good sign she remains sharp.......love the versatility the mare shows....she seems to fire whether up close or far back.....a big plus

4  Belle Royale   Euro invader has been beating the boys overseas....laid up since Sept but she is conditioned by the dangerous Simon Callaghan and is training like she is ready....1st time Lasix is most likely a plus

9  Go Forth North   3 for 6 at today's 1 mile distance.......0 for 9 at all other distances......been away since Sept. but has run well fresh in the past....work tab sure supports the idea she is ready

1  Rosehill Dew   deep closer gets the right turf jockey for the job....Gomez is obviously one of the best but he is especially prolific with late running grass horses

race 11    average clarity

1  Midnight Con   very solid efforts/figs in races 7 furlongs or more.....7F today.....and is trained by a guy who has been getting the job done the whole SA meeting

8  Galitzianer   68 to 1 in MSW debut strongly suggests that the race was a gimme to be a full throttle and go go go in 2nd lifetime start......Kruljack is vastly better with 2nd timers than 1st timers

9  Landonmav   1st timer is working up to snuff to be all set in his mc debut.....and.....mom has tossed 7 winners from 7 starters......not much of a 1st start trainer but I think this gelding is ready to run at 1st asking

6  Ron Burgundy   in decent form but will still need a little better to compete for the win

5  Swiss Game   needed last and should move forward......but I am very concerned that this colt will flatten out at 7F....but then again he does retain the meets leading rider

12  Tarsus   works are good enough to possible ready in his mc debut....mom has tossed 5 winners from 5 starters and 2 of those were Stakes winners....only mount of the day for Sutherland
