Santa Anita for Friday 20 April 2012

Last weekend of racing at Santa Anita until the Fall. The last 3 race cards at the majestic art deco track look awfully good to yours truly.

race 1    slightly above average clarity

1  World Renowned   only runner with any speed.....Rosario sure looks like the controlling speed in this affair

5  Blu Jon   laid up for 7 weeks after 2 2nd's in 2 lifetime starts both of which were on the sod....OK dirt pedigree....might have a shot at the chase position here and the pace sure appears as if it will be a soft one

6  Death Star   back to the dirt which he seems to prefer over the turf.....still......will need best ever to compete for the top prize well enough

race 2    average clarity

1  Treatherlikealady   laid up 8 weeks but training as if well meant on her return.......good shot to get a nice stalk position behind the significant speed of the 4 and the 5 horse

2  Hennessy River   not much on the turf in last.....but 3 out of 4 on the AW.....1st on "real" dirt but bred OK to handle it.....fits as well as anyone if she finds the surface to her liking

5  Love My Way   speed of the speed here but at what cost.....will most likely need to shake off the early speed challenge of the 4 horse

race 3    average clarity

5  Best Verse   small training outfit has had a solid SA meet.......good history sitting in the chase position and has a good opportunity to get that position today......should finish well coming off a 1 1/8 mile race and cutting back to 1 mile

7  Aqua Fever    most likely needed layoff run in last........Mullins is very very hot with his turf runners

4  Reach A Decision   ? for me here is health.....colt was training terrifically and was entered to run on 7 Apr. in an alw race but was a vet so so drill since and now drops from 50K claiming to 40K......hmmmmm......flip a coin

2  Winsome Charm   seems like a sprint tune-up in latest to be full throttle today at a route.......positive rider switch to the red hot Talamo who has been getting on all the right horses and riding them awfully well

race 4    average clarity

4  Itsaphun   mc debut last was better than appears in print.....back quick.....bred to appreciate the extended sprint distance of 7F........many in here sure look like the added distance will be detrimental to their chances

1  Game Changer   0 for 15 but this is a very soft looking bunch of bottom level maiden claimers........7F seems like an OK fit.....maybe a significant  plus

3  Miracle Merger   laid up for 16 months but is working like she is ready to roll.....would have been my top pick if this race was 6F or less but I am a bit leery of her chances to handle the 7 furlongs.......daddy doesn't exactly produce runners that do too well past 6F

7  Depistry   not much in 3 lifetime route races but should have an endurance fitness advantage here cutting back in distance.....might be the last one standing

race 5    average clarity

2  Erbeia   best ever on the sod was his lone race at today's marathon distance......also ran fairly well in a Grade 3 on the AW that was loaded with enough talent to be a Grade 1

8  Danderek    should be on or close to the lead from the get go in what looks like a reasonably paced affair......jock upgrade (to some unknown degree) as I know very little about the overseas rider that was up for all 3 of his USA starts

4  Lumberjcak Jack   was my long-shot selection in last start and boy did he run.....veered out 5 at the start and then ran wide.......only got beat by a diminishing 5 lengths......this horse has it in him to run at this level but does he have it in him to run a 1 1/2 miles.....not sure

1  Falcon Rock   if I owned this horse he would only run at 1 3/8 miles of longer....that is where he fires efforts that fit......would have rated higher but he does have a tendency to hang some in the stretch

race 6    slightly below average clarity

2  Chop House George   good chance to get loose here with a rider who is very good out of the gate and on the lead.....likes 5 to 8 weeks between starts and gets it

3  Cardiff Giant   trainer needs at least one win for the SA meeting so he drops to get it.....or the connections are screaming "claim me please"......I would rate it 60/40 in favor of dropping to win

1  Final Journey   running at a lower level at GG but those efforts fit well enough here......1st ever on the dirt is still a ? mark but Morey is 42% 1st after the claim.....must respect his judgement that the horse will handle the conventional dirt surface

9  Devoted Magic    wide trip in last hides an effort that fits at today's lower level....bit leery of only 2 dull drills over the last 7 weeks since Heap snatched at the claiming box....but then again Rosario does accept the mount

race 7    slightly above average clarity

3  Tiz Point   seems loose here with a reasonable pace and with a stout rider up.......1 win and 1 2nd the two times this colt got loose and lonely on the turf

2  Blingo    faces easier horses today than his last two races but his deep closing race style might compromise his chances in an affair seemingly set for those close up early

5  Vibrato Jazz   might be able to get a distance chase position with the meets leading rider have to like that

race 8    average clarity

7  Tornado Allie   up the track in lone lifetime start which was run in late January......but the works are quite strong since....and......the barn has woken up out of the doldrums and is heating things up including a 25 to1 winner yesterday

4  Rich In Tradition   bad trip in debut somewhat hides an effort that can win at this level with of course a better trip

8  Demonsterous    new trainer takes over......puts the blinkers on.......and just got this filly to work a near bullet 5/8ths drill on the SA surface........seems ready back in maiden claiming this afternoon

6  Warren's Assassin   last 3 of 4 races effort wise fit well versus these.......layoff of 7 weeks seems to be the question mark.....but Bejarano accepting the mount can be placed in the plus column of the ledger

5  Ramona's Rule   bad breaker so far in 3 lifetime races.....but lookout today if the blinkers on help this filly break cleanly....she should fit well here if she does

9  Heartless Honey   just claimed at GG by Belvoir who is good 1st out after the claim.....filly did show some life in her mc debut in N Cal
