Santa Anita for Saturday 21 April 2012

Good looking card today and Sunday's looks good too. Hollywood starts Thursday and you know I love Hollywood but I have been on quite a roll at Santa Anita so unless I tank the last weekend of the meet I will be sorry to see the Winter/Spring Meet end.

race 1    average clarity

2  Muny   two consecutive bad trips in a row.....hard to imagine a 3rd one as well as Talamo is riding right work in some time and Mitchell is the trainer.....a very dangerous thing

4  Gallant Gent   last was impressive.....wide with pace in layoff dirt race......earned an adjusted for trouble fig the fits solidly here....but....the jury still is out about his ability to handle the grass.....might be a ton here if he does

5  Circle Drive   rather tough foes in last 2 grass races down the SA hill turf course.......better horse off the pace so I like the fact that Quinonez is up as he is more likely to ride from off of it

1  Deadly Catch   22 to 1 in layoff last says that was the gimme at the 40K level to drop and go go go at 25K today.......not impossible

race 2    slightly above average clarity

4  Rock This Way    powerful move forward in last both in pace and final time wise....appears to like two turn racing.......decent recent reassuring jock aboard

5  Ultimate Decision   wide trip in last at a higher level and still only got beat less than 3L......drop makes sense as this gelding appears to prefer the dirt over the AW and it's back to Hollywood's AW surface Thursday

1  Special Kid   working as if an improvement can occur today......good history turf to dirt and that is today's scenario

race 3    slightly above average clarity

3  Swingaway   both lifetime grass races are better than par for today's level.......Kruljac's stock have been firing on all cylinders of late.........first time Bejarano is usually a good thing

1  Lake Maracaibo   Spawr sure appears to mean business with filly who ran a nice 2nd in her lifetime debut which was down the trainer has put 18 furlongs of works into the filly within a 10 day period.......sign of a very happy healthy horse

6  Highly Rated   all wound up with a tightly spaced series of works and draws the meets leading rider......Carla Gaines runner is very likely ready at 1st asking

5  Pourquoi Pas   work tab hints this 1ster might be ready to perform at a high enough level to compete decently in her debut

race 4    slightly above average clarity

3  Put It Here   on the improve with every start (horrid trip 2 back hides a forward effort) and now gets 5 pounds off......and.....Mr. Bejarano sticks around.......same or better today as his last is likely

1  Baron Von Red   fell off in last....solid excuse--sloppy........sizzling drills for today's race and back on what S Cal tracks usually provide......FAST tracks

5  Toy    by far his lifetime best was his lone race where he sprinted on a fast track....that's what he gets this afternoon

6  Secret Spy   major move forward on the AW at GG.....that race might fit well here if he can duplicate it on the "dirt".......high percentage N Cal trainer....dangerous to some degree

race 5   average clarity

5  Compari    seems to fire every time and is 6 for 8 on the grass at SA.....that's good enough for me to make my top pick

6  California Flag    4 for 6 down the hill.....8 year old might be hard pressed to bring his  "A game" which would crush these but he still has a shot with his "B game"....has run well fresh in the past

7  Irish Art   consistent sort is 2 for 2 down the SA hill but he beat much weaker in those two races....will need very best today....3 lbs off should help

8  Ain't No Other   3 wide pressing the pace hurt his chances in last.......has a shot with a more clever ride from his new rider for today, Mike Smith

Possible Long-shot:   4  Sayif   blocked badly in last about 1/2 dozen lengths.......never exerted in late should have plenty of horse for today.....and we get a jockey upgrade

race 6    average clarity

4  Night Badger   very sharp drills for this Headley 1st timer showing both endurance and speed his his a.m. conditioning....rather sure this colt is ready to roll

1  The Brain   great work series for this Baffert 1ster.....what's new?......4 straight gate works to finish up his work regiment suggests he is meant and ready

7  Designer   good near win MSW debut just 2 weeks ago......might need a little bit more today but surely can provide it with one race under his belt and back in 2 weeks

3  Half Strike   another working well enough to possible compete for the circle of joy

race 7    average clarity

5  Jairzihno    last 3 races are par like for the level efforts.......and now we get a significant jockey upgrade

9  Let's Do It    improving sort drops for the red hot Doug O'Neill......that's good enough for me

8  Honour Family   useful tune up sprinting on the main track in last....full throttle today back on the grass with the drop in claiming....blinkers back on....last race on the turf wearing the blinkers  (13 Feb 2011) was solid

11  Dress Code   seemingly very sharp right now.....must deal with a difficult post but owns tactical speed and a top echelon jock to help find a ground saving slot into turn one

race 8    slightly below average clarity

4  Close To The Bridge   very strong in last 3 races and now claimed by a red hot outfit....and 5 lbs off with the successful apprentice aboard

2  Industry Leader   stumbled at the start and ran 5 wide and still only lost by a like the same effort should occur.......better ride and the same horse and he will be ultra tough

5  John Scott   2 1/2 years off but he still is only five years of super.....when last seen in 2009 he ran a couple of monster efforts....fits fine if he returns ready and the same horse

7  Cyclometer   improving with every start and his recent works suggest the trend continues today.....retains the red hot Talamo.....very dangerous

Take Note:   Can't remember the last time Baffert didn't make up at least one of my selections when he had two entered.....both animals are nice horses but seemingly beatable here......keep your fingers crossed

race 9    average clarity

5  Vamo A Galupiar   very impressive finish in last....sure seems like 1 1/4 will fit well both pedigree wise and running style wise.....Drysdale is having a great 2nd half of the SA meeting

1  Hard Seven   has done little wrong in 5 lifetime grass races.....good post and a nice stalking style.....very dangerous if the early pace is reasonable......pedigree is decent for a race of 1 1/4 miles

2  Cambina   1 for 1 at the distance.......somewhat hidden in that 2 of her last 3 races were on "good" turf and she sure seems to prefer "firm" turf

6  Bauble Queen   another who may not have liked the "good" turf......and this filly has a good history back in 4 weeks or less which is today's scenario

race 10    average clarity

8  Salty Robin   distance looks like a good fit and so does being back in relatively short rest.....last race with similar short rest would make him very tough to beat

11  Father Pabst   trainer is having a very good meet......owns significant speed here......should be in control of things from the get go if he can break cleanly from the outer-most post......never an easy task as the horses often veer out

5  Oak Tree Drive   1st timer is working as if he might be ready to roll at 1st asking.........trainer/owner(s)/breeder combo have had maiden claiming 1sters ready in the past

9  Emerald Assets    laid up MSW drop down is showing big speed in his preparatory drills but little endurance....tough call

1  Si Es Verde    would like his chances if this was 5 1/2......but 6 1/2 has hurt him in the past....we shall see

3  Tiz Savy   don't see a lot of foundation in this 1sters drills but than again Puype/Talamo have been a dangerous combo of late....not impossible
