Del Mar for Saturday 21 July 2012

[private]

I only have the morning line favorite as my top selection in 3 of the 10 races and those 3 top choices look to me as if they will live up to their top billing.

race 1    average clarity

1  Massone   both races run last summer at Dmr would be difficult for this group to handle.....and might be peaking 3rd out after the layoff

4  Hoorayforhollywood   two of the better races that this Baffert runner has ever fired were his only two route endeavors and they were both at today's distance of 1 mile

5  Akkadin   recent efforts/figs on the lawn are solid but it is difficult for me to tell how well he will respond back on the AW.......only race on it is nothing to write home about....but careful because Canani is dynamite 3rd out after the layoff and that is the case today for this gelding

race 2    average clarity

6  Patty's Pulpit   Dollase has come out firing on all cylinders so far at the new meeting........can sit close in an affair seemingly set for those close up early.....drops to a level where she seemingly has always belonged

7  Pumpkin Pie   whole career fits solidly here.....only negative is that so far she comes from the clouds and that might hurt her some here.....but then again she has 7 furlongs to work with

1  Wrinkle Room    logical drop out of MSW racing.......for two reasons.....has only earned chump change so far and only cost $15K......needed last..... should be more muscled up for today

4  Miracle Merger   might show the best early foot in this affair.......and she showed she can handle the somewhat specialty distance of 7F

race 3    above average clarity

3  Acclamation    terrific Grade 1 front runner (who can successfully chase if need be) gets a positive weight shift of 3 lbs. versus his main adversary the 5 horse

5  Slim Shadey   very legitimate Grade 1 grass cutter might have a lot to overcome having shipped cross-country and back with only 14 days rest between starts.......but then again Simon Callaghan is one sharp turf trainer

4  Casino Host   late runner appreciates the 1 1/8th mile distance....... 2 for 5 at 1 1/8 and 1 for 8 at other turf distances.......1st time Ellis with a quality horse is a dangerous thing

race 4    slightly above average clarity

3  Winding Way    impressive MSW debut......repeat of the effort would make her stout versus these.....more and she would be a ton to overcome.....also she seems to be the controlling speed in this spot

1  Gelila   only career race sprinting on the AW (and at Dmr) was strong..... and it is disguised by a very bad trip.....and it was her MSW debut.......Shirreffs has freshened up this filly with a good work series which includes multiple speed drills which suggests to me that he wants this filly up closer in the early stages

5  Oulaoulala   nice move forward winning 2nd lifetime start...then bombed in a turf route....freshened up and the works seemingly have never been better....believe she will fire lifetime best today....capable trainer has only one horse to take care of......I like that

7  Lanida   done little wrong in 3 lifetime starts.......best ever (and at Dmr) was 2nd lifetime start......so.......2nd out after the layoff seems like a good thing

race 5    slightly below average clarity

8  The Roan Ranger    very strong late kick and seemingly plenty of pace to flatter that kick.....seems to appreciate ample time between starts and gets it......good reassuring work series

7  Trucial State   another very capable late runner hoping the race runs like it looks on paper

6  Yankee Dan    speed of the speed will be hoping  the 1, 3, 4, and the 10 won't put the heat on too early.....if so then he has his wire to wire chance

4  Skip Tony    chased no. 6 in his last and ran a decent 2nd.....and my guess is he will try the same tactic today as it seems suicidal for him to engage the speedster too early

race 6    slightly below average clarity

5  Gabriel Charles   very impressive work tab for this Mullins 1ster......and $160K for a baby from a $5K sire suggests this youngster turned some heads at sale

2  Rolling Fog    Baffert 1st timer is bred to have strong sprint capabilities......draws a good post.....and I sure like when Baffert runners finish off their work regiment with multiple gate works

6  Outside Nashville    working like a machine......2 year old is able to drill 5 furlongs at 6 day intervals....yikes.......1st timer seems muscled up and ready at 1st asking

10  Den's Legacy    so so debut but Baffert removes the blinkers to shake things up a bit.........continues to work sharply......deserves another chance

race 7    average clarity

5  Distinctive Dude    laid up runner is working like he is well meant fresh.........race lacks speed and this gelding appears to have the most

7  Primal Jones    LS shipper is well placed to win by Dallas Keen......and I sure like the little 3/8ths work on the Dmr surface which appears to be a decent drill

11  Magic Beam    competitive sort takes a logical drop.....and he is 1 for 1 at Del Mar and 0 for 12 at other racetracks......off pace runner needs a clever ride from his outside post

3  Gregor   laid up runner takes a meaningful drop........work series suggests this 4 year old gelding is ready......and he owns some gas in a race lacking it somewhat......both lifetime races at DMR are better than appear in print

race 8    average clarity

1  Briecat    0 for 3 at Dmr but he didn't get the lead in any of those turf races and he should get it here......last two grass races are strong and he chased in one of them......should wire if he has one more in him and handles the Del Mar turf

6  Hard to Resist   smooth turf runner usually.....and that is a big plus on the sod.....moved forward in last and it comes at a good time because this filly is 1 for 1 on the Dmr grass course

8  Halo Dolly   been getting away with easy paces in last 2 easy wins.....but she can chase just fine.......doubt she will do much if she duels with our top pick

9  Broken Dreams    decent 1st ever at a turf route in last......very positive jock switch for today.......believe Gomez will take back and hopefully not get caught 3 wide or worse on the 1st turn

race 9    average clarity

6  Keep Me Pointed    major wake up in last at LS on the grass especially pace wise......and just worked a stellar 2 of 54 47:2H on the deep Dmr surface....sharp sharp animal right now

3  Power Series   sure liked the AW in GB.........finally gets to run on it in the good old U S of A........gelding appreciates short rest between starts........I'd say 13 days qualifies for short rest

2  Temerity Kid    good post......consistent.......and his last win came with Gyrder aboard who will attempt to make the most out of his only mount of the day

4  Cayambe   exits an extremely key grass field/race where he only got beat by 3 1/4 lengths despite running 7th.........and he is more than capable of running on the AW

Long-shot Possibilities:   5  Accelerant     careful here.....clunker in last.....but.....race 2 back is very strong and would be highly competitive here

race 10    average clarity

7  Dreamcatcher   two straight very strong efforts/figs on the grass not to have graduated......solid recent reassuring 5F drill......should be tough

3  Half Strike   same owner/trainer/rider that won a grass MSW affair yesterday......debut on the AW wasn't too bad......but more importantly the works since are very solid and hint he is more than ready for his 1st at a route of ground and 1st on the sod

8  Corinthian's Song    good grass race 2 back was without blinkers....fell off in last with the blinkers........off today and so is the jock.....positive switch to Gomez.....and maybe most importantly V Garcia has won 5 of his last 11 with the blinkers off

4  Warrior's Ridge    looks like sprint sprint route sceanario for this grass horse who is bred to appreciate a route of ground on the lawn

1  Incentives

9  Great Rising Star
