Del Mar for Thursday 16 August 2012

[private]

Take note that we will be offering a special day of full card (usually 13 races and usually the best race card in the U S of A outside of the Breeders Cup) selections on Travers day at Saratoga on 25 August. Sign up is now available. Early bird sign-up will save you a couple of dollars as it has in the past. Selections will be sent in your email the night before Travers day.

Not too bad of a card today for a Thursday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1   average clarity

2  Koko Loca   blocked about 1/2 dozen lengths in last or wins this level .......2nd out after a layoff and a positive jock upgrade.....same or better likely today

1  Tornado Allie   handled strong fractions in last (her first on the lawn and first at a route) and never looked back....steps up here but sure seems dangerous as the best early speed in this spot

3  Belle De Lune   useful 1st ever in the good old U S of A in last.....back in relatively short rest.......last time ran with short rest she almost won a Grade 3 in France.....hot trainer in Proctor too

race 2    slightly below average clarity

1  Derby Hat   progressively better work tab for this 1ster.......last drill is awfully stout for a 2 year old filly maiden claiming 1st timer.....very capable trainer with a 1st timer

3  Controlled Chaos   sounds like a physics and/or math major named this 1st timer who is training up to snuff for her mc debut.....and mom has tossed 4 winners from 4 starters

6  Silent Ride   bet hard in MSW debut and ran OK......no action in last......that tells me that the race was the gimme to drop and go go go go........and O'Neill is having a solid Dmr meeting

7  Leona Pegasus   decent forward move in 2nd lifetime start and is training as if another move in the right direction can occur this afternoon

Longshot-shot Possibilities:   2  Flashy Ways   signs of speed and endurance for this Baltas 1st timer

race 3    slightly below average clarity

NOTE: Giving 5 runners because I am not sure if no. 11 gets into the field or not

5  Spirited Ruler   broke a little tardy and ran wide in a vastly improved 2nd lifetime start....same effort as last with a better trip makes this Knapp charge the one to overcome.....more would be icing on the cake

2  Causeway Gamblers   decent run considering he went off at 41 to 1 in his maiden debut........very sharp drill since........trainer is good with 2nd time starters and horrid with first timers......hmmmmm

11  Mine Fever   seemingly liked the front end of things improving in last loose on the lead......blinkers on today to help get the front once again.....very dangerous if clears

9  Bud Matic   Lopez 1st timer seems to have enough foundation in his drills to be ready in his maiden debut into the wonderful world of thoroughbred racing

1  Silver Lining   didn't show much in maiden debut but O'Neill saw something as he claimed this 2 year old colt.....good enough for me.......at least to give him a small shot in this spot

race 4    average clarity

5  Shred The Secrets   laid up since Dec. but runs extremely well fresh......set torrid fractions in lone 5F effort on the grass at Dmr last summer and did well  to finish 3rd

9  Blue Jay Attack    been very unlucky not getting races with any pace to enhance his late run.....not this time.......numerous speed/burn balls here

3  Daylight Magic   two of five lifetime races fit well here.......those two races were on the main track.....needs to do just as well in his 1st ever on the turf........pedigree seems OK to handle the transition

6  Mint Humor   only been headed at the 1st call in 1 of 9 lifetime races.......pace should be plenty hot here.....will need very best to hold together if that hot pace comes to fruition

race 5    average clarity

3  Stanford Dolly   very very consistent mare especially on AW surfaces......Dallas Keen has yet to win at Dmr but this runner has numerous works over the track where others only had 1 or 2 at most....consistent sort sure seems ready

6  Saint Cindy   seemingly in good form right now.....just needs to overcome a slight tendency to hang in the stretch.....Gomez sticks with the cheap claimer

1  Really Elegant   one mile seems like a better fit for this lead type only who cuts her claiming price in half and does look loose.....danger city

5  Akeela   another mare in good form who has run decently in route races on the AW but hasn't seen one in awhile.......jockey upgrade too

race 6    slightly above average clarity

3  Pogonip   on the right end of the learning curve and that is a dangerous thing with the calber of trainer that Carla Gaines is.....decent shot to graduate here

1  Acenda    good MSW sprint debut in last....now goes long.......has a good trainer 1st at a route.....has a decent post 1st at a route.......and obviously has a top rider in Bejarano to help him cope 1st time at a route

10  Dress The Part   exits a very fast heat where he just missed....bred fine to get a mile but rated 3rd and not higher because of the difficult post to cope with especially 1st time long

4  Urania   decent sprint turf tightener in MSW debut......should be fit and ready for his 1st endeavor on the AW and at a route......bred well to handle both

race 7    average clarity

1  Vaundell   Bejarano aboard is the key here.........record for him sprinting with this alw runner is (4 2 2 0).....handled 6F on the grass and handled 6 1/2 on the grass down the SA hill....doubt 5F at Dmr will be a problem

6  Fast N Furious Cat   good name for this speed-ball grass runner invading from Florida.......shows up in the Miller barn and Miller sure is stellar with early speed types

2  Red Defense   2 of his last 4 fit very well here.....which horse will it be today.......not sure

3  Circa'sgoldengear   late runner in this spot might try to sneak thru the inside here with a clever sprint grass rider in Joe Talamo

race 8    slightly above average clarity

6  Madeoftherightstuf   monster of an effort last summer at Dmr......Miller is never afraid to drop a maiden......a ton here if still in relatively good health off of the extended layoff

5  Sharp Kane    a Blackhawks hockey fan must have named this 1ster.....Sharp Kane can score here in lifetime debut off of a very sharp work series

9  Triumvirate   last looks like a needed 30 to 1 tune-up to drop and be at full throttle in his 2nd lifetime start....bullet gate work since his debut is awfully impressive

14  J Man   layoff last is solid for today's drop down level.......bit concerned about the drop.....healthy still or not?.....tough call

3  Got Bliss

7  Mr. Newton
