Del Mar for Sunday 2 September 2012

[private]

Gave an extra selection in some of today's races because The Racing Digest will have been published prior to early changes.

race 1    average clarity

4  Dynamic Diva     has been racing well versus older.......well placed to win....makes sense because SA is next and this filly has been nowhere when running on it's main track

2  Here Comes Bonnie  seems to be improving in the p.m. and just worked awfully well in the a.m.......should be a tough cookie on the small drop

5  Star Vesta   drops from the sky........obvious health issues.....toss a coin

7  Hidden Passion   SCRATCHED OUT OF RACE also a significant drop but much less alarming......trainer is win-less for the meet and the horse has hardly earned her keep over the spring and summer

Long-shot:   1  Vegas Rules   not the best of posts but this filly has had 2 straight bad trips in a row and her race 2 back is very strong.....much stronger than looks on paper

race 2    average clarity

12  Low Gear Power    efforts/figs stand out here......another who likes Del Mar and drops to score as the meet is coming to a close in a couple of days

8  Nonsense   Aguirre might have made a good claim here as this gelding sure improved the day Aguirre claimed him....and a solid reassuring drill since

4  Streets Of Heaven   Canani is good 1st off of the claim and outstanding 3rd out after layoffs which is the case for this runner....decent chance to get a nice stalk or mid pack position behind what looks like a lively pace up front

10  Capture The Call   very dangerous on the lead but he will need to shake free from the speed of the 5 horse.....believe he can but at what cost........7 for 16 at the distance is impressive

race 3    average clarity

5  Hadfunlastnight   won for fun in last and smartly steps up.......same jock......same distance and 2 lbs. off.......feeling good

8  Champions Gate   most likely needed last and now is willing to drop........trainer is waking up.....including a nice 17 to 1 winner (as our top choice) on Thursday with a 1st timer

6  Norm's Passion   appears to own the best early speed here....often runs a very fast 2nd quarter.......only win came the only time this colt got loose.....shot to wire

7  Endless Cruise   off since Nov. of 2011 but working as if ready....and lone race last year at Dmr was his most impressive

Longshot:  2 Willie Brown   improving fast and the fact Stute steps this one up hints he's never felt better....should be motoring late if he gets a significant pace up front

race 4    average clarity

2  Quietasacat   work regiment has meant and ready written all over it for this Carla Gaines first timer

8  Exclude   Mandella 1st timer also looks extremely well meant and ready with an impressive tightly spaced series off drills......and he loves to get his expensive 1st timers ready and this one went for $550K at sale

6  Merit Man   yet another 1st timer that has impressed me in the a.m......where as the other 3 1st timers will most likely get strong support at the windows I doubt this one will

4  Tancred    can't leave out a Baffert 1st timer.....that would be asking for trouble

race 5    slightly above average clarity

1  Protesta    broke MSW by 11 lengths 1st time at a route....then won a Grade 2 at Hollywood in superior time off a 7 week layoff........laid up since (9 weeks)....should be all set to perform at a high level once again....should be in it from the get go

8  Killer Graces   runs best on AW surfaces and is awfully consistent on them........been in and (competed well in) more Graded races than the rest of the field combined

5  Starlight Magic   race 3 back fits some especially if our top two picks don't bring their "A Game"

3  Long Face   seems in good health and is fairly consistent but doubt a winner unless runs career best or our top two toss clumkers

race 6    average clarity

8  Wild Dude   80% sure this Hollendorfer 1ster is a good one and that he is ready at 1st asking......you don't usually work 6F in 113H three days before a race without big intent

3  Storm Power   good work series for this Yakteen 1st timer finishing with a very strong 5F gate drill.....sure looks ready to roll

10  Procurement   big drills at AP prior to his MSW debut........showed plenty of run in the debut with not the best of trips.......good drill at Dmr......not an easy post but Talamo is riding awfully well

1  Uno Dos Adios   3 straight 6F drills for Spawr hints he has put in plenty of foundation into this 1ster who I believe is ready to roll

7  P Three D

race 7    slightly below average clarity

2  Cathy's Crunches   last summer Hollendorfer prepped this filly in a 1 1/16 turf race at SR and then ran a close 3rd in a 100K Stakes race on the AW at Dmr.......just ran 1 1/16 on the sod at SR....in a 85K Stakes race today....ready

1  Rock and Glory   seems ready to rebound to her powerful wire to wire winning performances.......she has shown she can hold together off of fast fractions.....back to jock who is 2 for 2 on her....0 for 4 with other riders

8  Koko Loco   last ran OK on the grass in latest but her race 2 back on the AW at today's 1 mile distance was quite strong and is somewhat hidden........horse was blocked 6 lengths on the 2nd turn and the stretch or would have won

7  Miss Mittagong   fits fine if this gal is ready fresh off of the bench but that is a tough call....might be a prep for her next out most likely at SA......50/50

4  Grasser

race 8    slightly above average clarity

2  Sheaparoux   strong MSW debut and now attempts a route......good post.......good route pedigree.........stout trainer and rider........highly likely to perform well in 2nd time start

9  Vixen   Baffert 1st timer hasn't missed working for the last 3 months....that's a lot of work so I believe the connections always thought about debuting their baby at a route.....believe this 1st timer is ready for the challenge of running 2 turns in Sept at 2

1  Scarlet Strike   exits a fast heat of MSW runners......very strong forward move in 2nd lifetime start and this fily sure has a solid route pedigree.....hard to split top 3

4  Majestic Thunder   poor start breaking from the difficult 1 post especially for a 1st timer......showed life after the start....also bred well to go long

5  Bas

race 9    average clarity

3  Brother Francis    impressive runner last year came out and won for fun in a prep race for today's Grade 2......all systems go for today's big race The Del Mar Derby

8  Old Tim Hockey   definitely on the right end of the learning curve......good grass conditioner in Proctor

5  My Best Brother   dangerous speed horse just missed wiring in a Grade 2 in her last as she got away with very reasonable fractions...shot for similar to occur today

10  Howe Great   Eastern invader seemingly fits fine and has the type of connections that no how to ship and win.......post hurts some

7  Midnight Crooner

race 10    average clarity

4  Northern Iowa   impressive win in last 1st ever at a route of ground......and the works since hint the effort muscled him up some......Cerin has had a great Dmr meet....expecting even more from this colt this afternoon

12  Dreamcatcher   very strong late kick for this Sadler runner.......and just worked a solid 5F work hinting he is sharp and might sit a little closer

1  Killer Bear   claim back by Mullins is fairly consistent and runs with late run like our 2nd choice.....dangerous sort

13  Donato    fast paced impressive wire to wire win in last......best speed here has a shot to clear from the outside and never look back....love the step up by Canani and the recent works......feeling good

2  They Call Him El

race 11    average clarity

2  Three Blondes   fell off in last but rebound to 2 races back would make this filly tough to beat.......hint we will get it with a switch to the meets top gun

7  Northern Flight   15 to 1 in MSW debut sprint for a Puype 1st timer hints that was the preparation to get fit as only a race can do and be at full throttle going long on the lawn......good grass pedigree

6  Warren's Today   needed last and it wasn't too shabby.......back to the grass where she ran awfully well in 2 of three races on it.....good spot for 1st win at the meet for the trainer

10  Attigirl Meadow   consistent on the grass but most likely will need a bit more to get over the maiden hump.....no pun intended

3  Romance Is Roman

1  Lethal Miss
