Santa Anita for Friday 28 December 2012

[private]

Today (so so card) starts five consecutive days of racing at beautiful Santa Anita. I have already handicapped 80% of Saturday and Sunday and both days seem decent so lets hope that the rain stays away as there is a 30% chance of rain both days.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  K Court    bombed out with blinkers on in last.......off today and drops back to a much more realistic level......off since August but works suggest this Armstrong charge is ready to roll

6  Surprise Sale   GG invader has done little wrong in 2 lifetime races......and has trained well at GG since he was claimed in his 2nd start.......question mark seems to be how well this Jedd Josephson runner will handle the conventional dirt

4  Justa Gusta   little shot to show his best in last as he set a pressured pace on a somewhat dull rail........decent shot to get the lead here and that can be a dangerous thing at SA

race 2    average clarity

2  Pogonip   major awakening in last in her 1st ever on the grass and it was down the majestic SA hill........has trained well since........likely to get a nice ground saving stalk position

6  Eileen's Dream    just keeps getting better.......and better........and better.........and..........one way or another this filly will need to avoid a speed duel with the 4 horse and maybe even our top pick

5  Belle De Lune   late runner seemingly gets enough pace up front here to be a major factor in the late stages of this affair

9  Lemon Hero

race 3    average clarity

8  Aqua Fever   has never missed the board in 7 lifetime starts on conventional dirt 4 of which are at SA......so I believe Mullins passed on running on the Hol AW which should make this a very fresh and ready cheap claimer......recent drills sure support this hypothesis

7  Asset Play   slightly hidden forward move in last.......handles "real" dirt just fine......solid contender here if he repeats his latest and gets a better journey from Jorge Rosales

6  Royal Encounter   nice wake up in latest and gets in 4 lbs lighter today.......late runner might come flying late with the light weight apprentice up

1  Morganouska

race 4    slightly below average clarity

10  Pick And Pray   mare takes a logical drop back to 32K which was the level she last won at.......she has been absent since May but she is working as if she is fit and ready.......most recent drill of 1:11 flat (bullet) is very impressive

2  Four Better   better history running in one turn affairs.......only race down the Santa Anita hill turf course was a par like effort for today's 32K level.......jockey/trainer have made for a good team the last 2 or 3 months

1  Folk Dancer   decent rebound in last and it is somewhat disguised by a poor trip.......hard duel on a deep deep track......positive rider change especially on the turf........dangerous sort 3rd out after the layoff

7  Ms. G. I. Jane

race 5    average clarity

8  Swiss Emperor   toss out last.....does not like the AW.....believe it was only a tune-up run......back to conventional dirt where this gelding fired two solid races in his 2 previous starts with the blinkers put on

3  Only The Gold   back to SA where this Jones runner has run his best.......blinkers off to shake things up some.......best ever was lifetime debut at SA and without the blinkers.....1st time Bejarano with Jones is a dangerous proposition

1  Political Man   vastly improved in 3rd lifetime start in Kentucky with the blinkers put on..........off since 26 October but has worked decently over at Hollywood since.......trainer has won 5 of his last dozen with 45-90 days between starts......and he is decent with shippers.......seems dangerous

7  Suancesong

race 6    slightly below average clarity

5  Awesome Year   gelding seems to fire to some degree in every start but has raced over his head t0o often.....drops to level he fits well......rider had a horrid Hollywood meet and can jump start the SA meeting and get on the right track here with a good ride......(sure was nice to see also in a slump Martin always giving his all and as tough as they come Pedroza do just that on opening day)

1  Hombre Hughes   wide and checked in the stretch in last or might have competed for the win with a good trip........owns 2 good efforts in 4 lifetime races on convention dirt rated "fast".........trainer does a good job with limited starters

6  Lewdawg N Paradise     much better on conventional dirt.......off since August but is working as if he is fit and ready.......solid rider upgrade.......seems dangerous running at his lowest level ever

4  Star Navigator

race 7    slightly above average clarity

5  Fantastic Mizz   very good spot for speed and this filly appears to have the most and she owns the best turf credentials in the race.........training extremely well especially for Shirreffs who doesn't push his stock that hard in the a.m.

1  Starseeker   34 to 1 for a Shirreff 1ster strongly suggest the race was a nothing more than a tune-up to get fit enough for her 2nd lifetime start at a route on the grass.........bred extremely well to appreciate the lawn and the distance

6  Scorpion Pride   same scenario as our 2nd pick for this Mulhall 2nd time starter.......as in gimme running short in lifetime debut.......and go go go 1st ever at a route and on the sod in 2nd lifetime start

3  Dime Piece

race 8    slightly above average clarity

1  Distinctiv Passion   owns significant early gas.......has handled the one post just fine (2 back).......and retains a stout speed jock in Maldonado.......and is working "lights out" in the a.m......sure looks loose and has a good opportunity to never look back if the track plays even

4  Super Ninety Nine   two very strong races in 2 lifetime levels.........should sit mid pace and be closing fast in the stretch

3  Mico Margarita     done little wrong in 3 lifetime races when allowed to race on Lasix.......handled the dirt at Belmont just fine

race 9    slightly below average clarity

11  Zippingaroundtown   on the improve - a good thing........seems to have the best early speed in the race - a good thing especially at 5 1/2F........good speed rider - a good thing........1st on the dirt - a ? mark

1  Harlington Night   not much to date but just gelded and the works are much improved......so.......the ultimate equipment change seems to have worked as it so often does not only for horses but most animals

8  Money Making Sam   the blinkers on seemed to help in latest but the extended sprint distance of 7F appears to be a bit too far for this O'Neill runner.......so.......the cut back of 1  1/2 furlongs might do wonders for this youngster

12  Derringer

5  Intendedconsequen

3  Awfully Lucky
