Santa Anita for Friday 4 January 2013

Very difficult card this afternoon as you can surmise by examining our "clarity" ratings. Much more clarity on the cards tomorrow and Sunday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average

1  Miners Daughter   powerful MSW figs in all 3 lifetime races when you adjust for trouble and/or pace.........great start for Leparoux riding for Baffert........winning 3 of last 4 for the trainer and hitting the board with the other

7  Elusive Jackpot   giant awakening in last for this Baffert 4 year old.......filly has produced solid fractions in all 3 lifetime starts........dangerous gate to wire shot here

3  Regime   very impressive work regiment for this expensive Carla Gaines 1st timer not missing a beat in the a.m. for over 3 months.......rather sure wound up and ready to roll

5  Thisonesforricky

race 2    average clarity

1  Priddis Wildcat    only effort on conventional dirt (and at SA) easily stands out as this gelding's best both in final time and pace.......somewhat of an alarming drop but has only run 4 times and is now 4 years old so maybe the barn feels they need to win now...........stout here if repeats the SA race

3  Kenichi    another with an alarming drop but very dangerous if he is still in relatively good condition.........bad trip in last hides a good effort.....wide on an inside track and ran close to a solid pace

6  Beau Royale    low percentage trainer but he has done a nice job with this gelding.......fits fine if he can get another solid run out of this 4 year old

8  Classic Crusader

race 3    below average clarity

6  Misdeed   tepid top pick bombed out in last at a route on the sod but his MSW debut 2 back sprinting on the lawn at Hol was decent.....turf sprint here

2  Cervaro    exits a very key race where the top 3 finishers came back to win and 4th won 2 races later........25 to 1 in MSW suggests the race was a tune-up.......1st on the sod but bred well to handle the green carpet

12  Lemon Drop Kid    solid MSW debut sprint on the grass last summer at since August after 2 lifetime starts..........fresh once again and training as if he is set to compete at a high level as he did to open up his career

11  Buckleberry Gray

Long-shot possibilities:   5  I'm Wide Awake   not much in last 3 endeavors which were all at a route of ground.......but MSW debut 4 back was an impressive sprint both considering exceptional early pace and solid final time

rave 4    slightly below average clarity

6  Black Witch   broke slow and then checked early and still almost won MSW debut.........1st at a route but bred well to handle one........and Bob Baffert is very solid 1st time long with youngsters

7  Having Abig Middle   distance turf fit and has showed she can handle the SA conventional dirt.......O'neill/Krigger have been a good combo of late

5  Spellbound   Mandella intelligently puts the blinkers on this deep closer to get her in the game earlier so her late kick potentially can be more have never been better

1  Humming Beethoven

race 5    slightly below average clarity

3  Ruled By Kisses   dull works leading up to 20 to 1 maiden debut........believe the 2nd place finish pleasantly surprised his connections somewhat.........sharper work since........seems likely to move forward.......and drops a couple of notches

9  Monster Hit   vastly improved effort in latest and it is somewhat hidden by a slightly tardy start and a wide trip-a-roo.....and the race was run with 41 days days off seems like a good thing

13  Deception Free   showed vastly improved early foot in last and there isn't that much speed in this gate breaking jock Maldonado will most likely try to get the jump on the field and control things on the front end or at least close to the front end

11  Spit Ball

race 6    average clarity

4  Twelve Folds   better horse on the conventional dirt (5 1 3 1) and just popped a bullet work at SA indicating he is happy to be back on the old fashioned surface

5  Trapper's Bounty   blinkers back on for today and owns 2 recent solid drills ........owns some significant back numbers last Spring.......might be up to a rebound to one of those top efforts this afternoon

3  Sudden Sunday   off pace runner seemingly gets a good spot here in a race with copious speed types......and he gets Gomez to ride who is exceptionally good at getting the most out of off pace sprinters

9  Luxuriance

race 7    average clarity

7  Time Lord   distinct lack of early speed in this affair bodes well for this front runner who only has to stick 1 mile and gets Bejarano aboard........who has done well on this colt in the past.....1 win and 1 2nd in 2 grass mounts

3  A Toast To You   consistent sort's last two turf route wins came when this 4 year old was in the 2nd slot chase position........good chance to get that position here

1  Shadow Runner    fits fine on numbers/efforts but where as his last few grass races were set up for his closing style today's race doesn' least on paper it doesn't

6  Huntsville

race 8    average clarity

4  Derby Gold   speed of the speed here and has also won from mid pack........all three lifetime races at SA are solid.........will be interesting to see where Garcia/Baffert want the horse placed in the early stages......and will the colt cooperate

2  Master Chef   gelding is on the improve and now gets to race on his favorite racing surface.......the SA "real" dirt main track.......the great majority of Hollendorfer runners have been firing on all cylinders

1  Pulpit's Express   lead type only so far in 5 lifetime races will need to avoid a costly speed duel one way or another......... whether that means getting a jump on the other early speed or make an attempt to successfully rate for the 1st time ever

5  My Slew

6  Three Vases

11  Island Sunset
