Santa Anita for Thursday 10 January 2013

The riding colony sure appears to be getting significantly stronger with the addition of Julien Leparoux, the impressive comeback by Tyler Baze, the vast improvement made by Edwin Maldonado, the maturing of Joe Talamo, and of course the return of Gary Stevens if he is able to be at least 75% of what he was in his prime.

Right now there is no doubt in my mind that S. Cal has the strongest group of riders in the Country and that may not have been the case for the last decade or so.

 Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

3  Tiz A Minister   very strong figs considering today's level in last two endeavors......lone race on the grass could have been a win but was compromised by a very wide trip from the 11 post (at 1 mile on the sod).........3 post today

2  Greely Awesome   powerful move forward/fig in latest.....little opportunity to preform in lone lifetime grass race as this colt got blocked badly in the stretch and never got a chance to show what kind of turn of foot he has on the grass

6  Luz Atticus    will need a good move in the right direction in his first grass run ever to overcome our top two selections......but he might get loose here and he owns a good grass pedigree

race 2    average clarity

5  J and J Express   tight quarters in late stretch in latest or had a shot to win at 2 claiming notches higher......likes today's distance and likes conventional dirt......impressive 6F drill since his last.....and drops.......many positives make for top pick

7  Forty Paces   seems to appreciate the SA dirt surface.......dull works prior to latest which was run at Hol......solid works since.......and trainer rider combo.....seems meant and ready for today

8  Ebo's Love   trainer seems to be waking up........jockey upgrade......solid recent bullet 5F drill.......and this mare might be feeling awfully good to step up 2 levels claiming off of some lackluster recent efforts

3  Magic Mama

race 3    slightly above average clarity

6  Valley of Kings   nice return to the race wars off of a 9 month hiatus in latest as he had a short lead stuck on a somewhat dull rail and still stuck around for 2nd.......can be in the hunt from the get go.......last fits fine and any move forward and he will be awfully tough here

3  Parliamentarian   only lifetime start was way back in Jan. of 2012 and was rather regiment put into this 4 year old by Headley suggests he wants his runner to perform at a high level fresh off of the bench this afternoon

8  Russel's Run    steps way up after a good 2nd in his maiden debut which was at the Mdn20K level........trained well prior to debut but is training even better since.......might be up to the class hike challenge

4  Hi Chooch

race 4    average clarity

4  Half Dome Dude   seems like a very sharp claim by Mulhall as this 5 year old has run awfully strong in his last two races and his race two back is hidden by the fact that he was caught wide on a rail bias.....must be feeling good for Mulhall to double the claiming price from 8K to 16K today

1  Hard Bill   why not drop this gelding to 16K as he is 9 now and has been away for over 1 1/2 years......great record on conventional dirt (11 7 3 1)......yikes

7  Cabo Chico   so so on AW surfaces but that is not the case on conventional dirt where he owns 3 wins and 1 second in 4 lifetime starts.......

6  Max Cooper

race 5    slightly below average clarity

8  Forbidden City   faced much tougher in last in a race taken off the turf and run on the Hol AW.......Hollendorfer still wants the grass even tough this filly won by 9 in her only race ever on conventional dirt and has yet to run on the green carpet.......that's good enough for me

6  Blushing Martha   solid effort/win 1st time Bejarano in last in a 6F grass race at Hollywood..........Bejarano sticks around for today......only race down the SA hill turf course isn't bad and it was with a jockey who has a dismal record on the grass (he is decent on the main track)

1  Funny Belle   3 of 4 lifetime grass races fit well at today's given since late October but her work regiment suggests she is meant and ready for her 1st ever in sunny S. Cal

10  Belle Passe

Long-shot possibilities:    9  River Kiss   lone race done the SA hill was versus tougher and is better than appears in print.........and..........the race is basically a par like effort for today's given level when you adjust for any trouble and pace

race 6    average clarity

6  Tribal Gal    abbreviated sprint distance of 5 1/2F seems like a good proven early gas in the race......and training as if her 1st ever race on the SA main track will be a plus

2  Pine Walk   very poor effort figure wise especially for 1st time Baffert........but that effort was on the AW......previous race at Crc on conventional dirt was impressive and it was in 2nd lifetime start.......real dirt today and 2nd out after a layoff.......hmmm

1  Funny Gal   on the right end of the learning curve and I don't see many reasons that the trend can't continue today......1 for 1 at SA winning by 5 1/4 and the recent a.m. work at SA is awfully good

4  Bert's Altarcation

race 7    average clarity

1  Key Decision   good speed in this spot........1 post should be advantageous at 1 mile and the rail out 30 feet.........and the works for this Avilia charge are the best looking set of drills from the conditioner in quite some time

2  Make Music For Me   if the 1, 4 and 8 turn up the heat on one another then lookout for this mid pack runner to be a strong factor in the stretch.......4 for 14 on the sod........0 for 13 on the main track.........always seems to fire when Garcia is aboard

4  Hoorayforhollywood   rider has won 4 of the last 1/2 dozen mounts for the trainer.....1st on the turf but has an excellent grass pedigree..... and......runs well on the Hollywood AW and most horses that handle the Hollywood synthetic handle the sod

7  Akkadian

race 8    average clarity

4  One In A Mili   fairly decent debut for this Mulhall runner....and I doubt she was all that meant as she went off at 19 to that was the sprint tune-up to tighten up and be at full throttle 1st at a route of ground today

9  Zerbinetta   good wake up in latest and claimed in the trainer Conlon has won 7 of her last 21 1st time out after a claim.....1st long but bred very well to get a route of ground........and we get a very positive rider upgrade

3  Pure Blush   best ever was lone lifetime route race which was at GG.......showed she can run on conventional dirt running an OK MSW 4th at Fpx.....only bought for $45K at sale so dropping to mdn2oK doesn't bother me too much

2  Mending Wall

10  Lady Comic

1  Unusual Darling
