Santa Anita for Saturday 2 February 2013

Wild card today.......the kind of card we might take a bath or make a bundle as our top selection is the 4th, 8th, 6th, 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 10th, 4th choice in the morning line. Yikes!

TAKE NOTE:  We are excited to say that in all likelihood we will provide special publications this year for all 3 legs of the Triple Crown. Last year we covered Ky Derby Day and Belmont Day. And very soon we will be offering a significant early-bird discount if you purchase all three.

Best of luck today as always!

race 1    slightly below average clarity

3  Colburn    debut 2 back is better than appears in print.......and then 2 excuses in 2nd lifetime race........acted up at the gate.......and broke a little tardy and ran wide after that.......solid adjusted for trouble figure and it was at today's two turn distance of one mile

4  Tiz The Truth   Baffert runner vaulted forward in 2nd lifetime start.......bred just fine to get another furlong and cope with a couple of turns especially under the guidance of Baffert and company

1  Misdeed   showed promise in his MSW debut 3 back on the grass.......then had no chance 1st long on the grass getting caught wide too close to a nasty pace while visible excuse in last........has always trained like he likes the SA dirt and finally gets to compete on it

race 2    slightly above average clarity

3  Mr. Make Believe   very strong efforts (both disguised somewhat by bad trips) in his last two races on firm rated turf both of which were run at 1 mile......should be plenty firm this afternoon.......and the bonus is that he has handled the SA hill turf course just fine

2  Mr. Bossy Pants   ultra consistent grass cutter especially on the SA hill where he is now 5 for 8 after his victory in his last....should be solid once again

4  Drift King   another consistent sort who lost to our 2nd choice by a nose in his latest......loves to sit in a stalking position and I don't see why he can't get that desired position here

7  Gutshot Straight

race 3    average clarity

2  Red Man Run   nice move forward back in 2 weeks rest in his general seems to be at his best when he is healthy enough to run back in two weeks.........back in 15 days for this afternoon's affair

5  Hi Cooch    two sprint tune-ups in his 1st 2 lifetime races to drop to the bottom and be ready to roll 1st time ever at a route.......quick recent 4F drill hints the connections might be seeking the front end here

8  Unsinkable Sam   broke slow and then was used up rushing up to the leaders in his mc debut.....claimed by Colon who has won with 7 of her last 21 claims 1st time under her guidance for a solid win return of profit if you backed all 21

1  Excessive Pride

race 4    slightly below average clarity

2  Flashback   very solid win in MSW debut.........effort/fig fits fine at today's much higher level.......looks very loose here for his 1st ever at a route.....jock will try to slow things down in a big way

4  He's Had Enough   easily his lifetime best was the only time he has run on a conventional dirt surface and it was at SA and at today's 1 1/16 distance.......big recent 1:10:4 drill at SA......seems all set to fire a good effort

3  Den's Legacy   best ever in latest (and at SA) with a solid bullet work prior to the race......2 bullet works since the race.....seems sharpest of his career right now.......and that is a very dangerous thing when Mr Bob Baffert is your trainer

race 5    average clarity

8  Topic   horrid trip in last racing way too wide and still managing to close in the stretch for a most impressive 3rd place since 11 Nov but training like she is returning ready

1  Magnificent Shirl    on the improve with every start and has never trained better........rather sure sitting on lifetime best.......and good post and good rider

7  Tizmetizyou   easily the best early speed of those that have raced.........dangerous wire to wire or chase position here

2  Scooter Bird

race 6    average clarity

5  Scorpion Warrior   very very impressive in all 3 lifetime starts including almost beating I'll Have Another in 2011 in his 2nd lifetime start.....2nd after the long layoff today

2  Italian Rules   off since June but runs just fine fresh.......3 wins and 2 2nds in 5 lifetime races on conventional for 40K........that bothers me very little because this horse is now 8 years old

1  Luckarack   best on "real" dirt and.........seems best at today's 6F distance........very consistent sort usually makes a very powerful move on the turn

9  Malibu Run

race 7    slightly below average clarity

6  Power Foot    what we want to see is this colt's effort 2 races back and the way that R Mandella has being going there is a good chance we will see it

10  Vibrato Jazz   last appears to be a needed layoff run......full throttle today and at a distance that suites this colt well......very good rider/trainer combo lately

9  Ivanho   impressive improvement in last closing very fast from far back......claimed by Mitchell and he wheels this gelding back in 13 days and with a nice 4F drill 4 days ago........sure seems like a good sign he snatched a sharp and healthy horse

8  Te Rapa

Long-shot possibilities:   3  Rintoo   easily best race of this colt's career was his lone race on the sod.......and it is hidden by a bad slow and ran wide and still closed well from far back

race 8    average clarity

3  Guilt Trip   very impressive best of career effort in last and just worked a very stout 6F drill at SA hinting he has held his form for this afternoon........and he might even show more

4  Tritap   solid in all 3 lifetime route races on "fast" rated conventional dirt......and gets a much more manageable post this afternoon

2  Fed Biz    3 for 5 at SA including a nice win in last.......would have rated higher if he didn't pick up 5 more lbs......still a very nice and dangerous Baffert runner here

race 9    slightly below average clarity

2  Forest Mouse   invader has never been sharper.......he's 4 for 5 on the turf......gets a good post and rider......likely to get a good mid to close up ground saving position into turn 1.......and with this extremely large field for a 1 mile affair that is a distinct advantage.........many in here will likely get bad trips and a few brutal trips

12  Chosen Miracle   cut back of 1 furlong sure helps this lead type only who will need a clean break to clear from the 12 post......can be a tough front runner if he does

13  Suggestive Boy   best animal in the field drops 8 lbs from his last where he earned a very strong adjusted for any trouble and pace fig in last........but........nasty post to cope with......lookout if Talamo somehow gets over to the 2 path or better into turn 1

1  Klisz  (tie for 4th selection)

7  Silentio  (tie for 4th selection)

race 10    slightly above average clarity

11  Agents Bruce    best (and somewhat the safest from the vultures looking to claim) time to drop a horse is off of a layoff.......that is the case here and the work regiment strongly hints this Sherman runner is ready to roll

5  Over Africa   caught an off track in his latest.......toss it out.........both lifetime races on conventional fast track dirt are good......should be fast today

2  Eaton Hall   lead type only keeps dropping and failing.....drops again.......but he does look loose here and that makes this declining Baffert runner still a tough dangerous

3  Heza Fox

1  Time To Doubledown

4  Star Navigator
