Santa Anita for Thursday 21 February 2013

Decent looking and playable race card to start off the new week of racing.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Russdiculous   trainer could use a few winners and so he drops this MSW runner into maiden 30K to enhance his chances of visiting the circle of joy......cut back of 1/2 furlong looks like a plus as well

7  Indian Spirit   12 beaten lengths - 17 beaten lengths - 17 beaten lengths - 13 beaten lengths........points of call pattern (often called a Z pattern) for his mc debut hint at a gimme......and the trainer wins with close to 1/5th of his 2nd time starters and with very few 1sters.....1st time Lasix can be a plus today as well

1  Mars Curiosity   another barn much more prolific with 2nd time starters..........3 reassuring decent drills since eased in mc debut last.......and a rider upgrade

8  Mine Fever

race 2    average clarity

4  Quizzical   solid in all three lifetime endeavors on the SA main track.......likely to get a nice stalk or mid pack position with the hot Mr Stevens on her back who if he keeps up his incredible comeback might find himself on the cover of AARP magazine

2  Distracting   didn't care for the off track she competed on in latest.....formidable presser needs to avoid going out too fast in the early stages......she should be very tough if she gets an average or slightly above early pace

5  Belloma   2 for 3 at today's 6 1/2F distance.......needed last.......very impressive 100:1 Breeze ( rare to get a drill labeled "Breeze" in California let alone a 3/30 breeze) just 5 days ago.......sure seems set for this afternoon's affair

race 3   slightly above average clarity

3  Empty Headed   last race fits but want I am hoping for is his effort 3 back which would be tough for others in this race to overcome

9  Troy Story   seems to fire to some degree every time he competes on the grass......and the meets leading rider (by a wide margin) sticks with the horse......should get your monies worth here

7  Celebrity Status    set a blistering pace in MSW debut and rightfully tired late in a race taken off of the turf........impressive work tab since.......and owns a good grass pedigree.......very dangerous on or near the lead if he lives up to his breeding and handles the sod

8  Kilat

race 4    average clarity

6  Tribal Spy   major league wake-up in last with the blinkers removed both in pace and final time......and now a we get a rider upgrade especially when it comes to handling a speed horse

3  Bikini Bottom    25 to 1 for an O'Neill 1ster in MSW debut hints that the race was only a tune-up to drop and be fit and ready today in a maiden claimer.........only needs to move forward about a 6 lengths to be a par like competitor for what it takes to win at this lower level

5  Southern Journey   Baltas 1st timer starter seems wound up and possibly ready to roll having basically hit the track to work weekly for at least the last 8 weeks.......trainer has made the most of his limited starts over the past 6 months or so

1  Puttybadshark

race 5    average clarity

6  Bright Thoughts   meets top gun looks loose in this spot but his horse is also capable of chasing if need be........repeat of last would make him tough.......and he will be ultra tough if he manages to move forward 2nd out after the layoff

5  Saint Loup    seemingly fits the 1 1/4 mile distance as well as anyone in this field.........French invader ran so so in lone U S of A race run in early November but is now training for Canani like he will show much more this afternoon

9  Vibrato   blinkers on and switch to Maldonado hints that Sadler wants this colt to sit closer in the early stages of the race........yet to run past 1 1/8th but the added distance sure seems like it will be a good fit as this colt won at 1 1/8th in Feb of his 3 year old year which is never an easy task

3  Toruk Makto

race 6    average clarity

5  Royal Tiger   training nicely for her new trainer Mark Glatt (who used to train the horse) 2 lifetime races were run in one turn "fast" rated sprint races......forecast is for sunshine all day

1  Spacecoast   on the right end of the learning curve......filly has developed a nice stalking style.......Bejarano (and his agent) wisely stick with the horse for a 3rd straight time

2  Scary Ride   works fast and runs fast at least in the early stages of a race.......might be speed of the speed here

7  Metaxa

race 7    slightly below average clarity

4  Square Dancer   Peter Miller looks as if he picked up a young horse out of S Florida who is on the upswing since switching to the colt seems to fit the condition of this race well and has lucked into a rather soft looking group of locals

5  I Don't Care Who   another who is moving in the right direction.......last fits if he can duplicate the effort in his 1st ever on the green carpet.......owns a decent pedigree for it

3  Collation   not much in last but a decent maiden breaking race 2 back......but more importantly this gelding sure has a good pedigree for both the turf and distance racing.......he did look like he handled his lone grass race decently running evenly after a slow start in a 5F 2 year grass race last summer

1  Ariel Artist

race 8    average clarity

7  Banged His Eye   no shot in his MSW debut last......dueled in a hot pace on a somewhat dull rail and predictably drops and gets 1st time Lasix.......very dangerous loose maiden here for a good speed trainer in Peter Miller

3  Teton County   1st timer has very solid works especially considering this race is a bottom level maiden claimer........rather sure this 5 year old can run some......I am more concerned about the low percentage rider in the saddle

1  Mayan Eyes   fell way off in his last two races after two very strong bad trip races 3 and 4 races back........recent 2 /15  drill hints of a rebound......lookout if he does and finally gets a good journey when he feels at the top of his game

5  Green Team

6  Unmarked Bills

8  Warren's Bugler
