Santa Anita for Friday 29 March 2013

Decent looking race card this afternoon and Saturday's looks even better.  Word of warning that on Easter Sunday the comments will be somewhat abbreviated.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Strange Luck   checked about a length and ran wide on the turn in a somewhat hidden move forward in latest.........lone lifetime win in 4 race career came off of 49 days rest.......decent work tab & 50 days since his last race

7  Island Frolic   crushed the only time this Bonde runner was put up for  a tag......up for 16K today with Bonde's (quite often) go to guy aboard in Maldonado

6  Jesse's Giacomo   has beaten quite a few in here in the past......seems slightly improved since the blinkers were added 2 races back......mid pack runner seemingly gets ample pace to flatter her stretch run

3  Exclusive Story

race 2    average clarity

3  Ondine   both lifetime races which were run last year are par like efforts for the filly MSW level.......par is obviously a good thing but the works displayed in 2013 hint that this Baffert runner is returning like an even better runner for her 2013 three year old campaign

5  Tres Belle   expensive Baffert filly 1st timer hasn't missed a beat in the a.m. and I sure like when Bob Baffert finishes off his work regiment for a 1st starter with a series of gate works

4  Corlett Drive   horrid debut.......decent 2nd out........and a very strong 3rd lifetime start.......broke poorly.......ran wide......and lugged in some in the stretch and still managed 2nd in a MSW affair

2  Caribe d'Oro

race 3    average clarity

8  Black Tunic   feel fairly good about our 4 given selections in this race but they were difficult to separate.........Black Tunic has shown brilliant early speed from outside posts in her last three race endeavors so it seems likely she will clear here once again and have a shot to if Maldonado shakes free in a reasonably pace

5  Chokecherymary   consistent hard trying sort has been 1st or 2nd in all 4 races on turf rated "firm" and 1 mile on the grass might be her very best distance

3  Viva Carina   Avila is all business here with this filly who is coming into this nw2 alw race with 3 consecutive 1 mile drills spaced 7 days apart......that is mighty impressive a.m. work

2  Jolly Days

race 4    slightly above average clarity

5  Chico Suerte   poor trip in latest hides a better than it appears in print 2nd in this gelding's 1st ever at a route of ground.....but maybe more importantly the 5 works since strongly suggest he is sitting on a substantial move forward

1  Penny Maker   had about 8 lengths of trip trouble (broke slow, bumped, ran wide) and was only beaten by 7 1/2 lengths in a Mdn75K grass race.......cuts claiming price by more than half......and......Eoin Harty has won 6 of his last 18 turf to dirt

8  Kingsbury   par like effort in last for this 3 year old gelding........claimed by Kitchingman in the race who is 6 for 9 at the SA meeting and the conditioner is using Maldonado in the saddle who is 3 of his last 4 for the trainer.......yikes-a-rama

2  Doubledessonthetee

race 5    average clarity

7  Corinthian Melody    all her career grass races fit here but if she brings her "A game" she will be particularly difficult to handle here........Garrett Gomez remains aboard.......a good sign the filly remains in decent form

3  Pure Smiles   toss out last on the goo as this filly wanted no part of the off track......back to the grass where her last race on the sod fits here at this lower mdn level.......and we have a better grass jock up today in Bejarano

1  Hair On Fire   good grass pedigree for this Cerin runner which should bode well for a solid move forward this afternoon in her 1st ever on the sod.......and she owns a touch of early speed and has a good post and speed rifer aboard

2  Roust 'em Bertie

race 6    average clarity

5  Langfurs Lightning   lone lifetime win came turf to synthetic dirt in a 7 1/2 furlong turf to 7 furlongs in a conventional dirt race today seems like a good maneuver especially considering this gelding ran well the only time he saw "real" dirt.......2nd start for David Hofmans and the trainer is rather hot of late

3  Judge Carr   Hendricks is quite stout at the sprint-route-sprint maneuver and that is the case here.....and this gelding appreciates the somewhat specialty 7F distance

9  Noble Kent   laid up since early summer (and right after Puype claimed) but has hit the track every 6 days for a prolonged period of time which says to me this gelding is wound up and ready to roll......and Gomez has won 2 of his last 3 mounts riding for Puype

1  Luz Atticus

race 7    average clarity

6  Rosengold   very impressive work tab prior to a solid gate to wire sprint win on the sod in latest......continues to work stellar on the grass.......1st in a two turn affair but Julio Canani is solid 2nd time on the sod and quite good the 1st time long with a given horse

4  Counting Days   lone route grass race is quite a bit better than appears in print.....had subtle trouble.....the best kind of trouble these days with replays so readily available.......and the recent preparatory works look solid

3  Greeley Awesome   both lifetime grass races are much better than they look on paper........wide and checked on the back-str on Oct 10th, 2012 and then on 10 Jan. of this year he was blocked a long time and still managed a win in a pace-less affair where the internal fractions made it impossible to run a good final time

7  Procurement

race 8    average clarity

5  J and S Express   very consistent hard trying sort especially on conventional dirt.......seems like a significant rider upgrade......and lone race at 1 mile (which was rune at Dmr in mid summer) looks like a dull effort on paper but was not.......ran too wide and was bumped a length......did well to only get beat by 6 1/2 lengths

7  Flashy Delight   3 wins and 2 3rd's in 5 lifetime races on main track surfaces.......appears to be at his very best in two turn affairs

2  Bonita Star   seems like a better horse on main track surfaces (5 2 1 1)........Janet Armstrong is a dangerous trainer running 2nd time out after a layoff.......drop doesn't bother me as Armstrong snatched this horse for only 10K at the claiming box

1  Katy's Kity

8  Tornado Allie

3  Grand Corredora
